Bolt light on car

Bolt light on car DEFAULT

If you are like me, you may not understand all the warning lights that are on your Jeep’s dashboard or maybe you might. Most warning lights are pretty much straight forward but what does the red lightning bolt symbol in a Jeep mean?

Quick aside, this is why having a good OBDII Scanner is a good idea!

The red lightning bolt indicates that there is a problem with your Jeep’s Electronic Throttle Control (ETC). This is a system that replaced the mechanical throttle mechanism with a sensor based one. It measures the pressure which you put on the throttle and sends it, through sensors to a motor which opens the throttle in direct proportion to this pressure.

What Does Red Lightning Bolt Mean on Jeep?

Older car models connected the throttle and gas pedal through a cable. The pressure you applied to the gas determined how much the throttle opened and, therefore, how much gas was released.

This system was not very efficient and resulted in high fuel consumption. That’s when the Electronic throttle control was developed.

This technology started appearing in cars from around 1990 and is designed to do away with the old mechanism. It is, however, not immune to mechanical faults and the way you know is through the red lightning bolt light on the dash board.

When you see this light appear, it means that the communication between the gas pedal and the throttle is not happening as it is supposed to.

In such an instance, you will need to perform a gas pedal reset which we will discuss a little further down this article.

What Do I Do If My Electronic Throttle Control Light Comes On?

If the ETC light comes on while you are driving, you don’t necessarily need to stop. You may continue driving but your Jeep needs to be looked at. You may need to do a pedal reset or take it in to a mechanic if the reset doesn’t work.

How Do I Reset My Electronic Throttle Control System?

When the red lightning bolt symbol appears on your Jeep’s dash, it may mean that that the pedal position is not lined up properly causing there to be miscommunication with the sensors that control the motor which opens and closes the throttle.

The extent to which the throttle opens and closes is determined by the gas pedal position. When you drive your Jeep for a specific amount of time, the gas pedal will get out of alignment, and resetting it is quite easy.

To reset it, turn your key to on without starting the car. Next, depress the gas pedal all the way to the floor then let it up again.

Next, start up your car and press down the throttle to see if your Jeep responds. If you keep having issues with the throttle and the red lightning bolt light remains on, you will need to have a mechanic look at it and get it sorted.

Conclusion

The ETC light coming on is not usually cause for major concern but it does need you to pay attention to it. You can still drive your Jeep but make sure to take care of the issue by doing a reset or having a mechanic look at it.

If the light starts to flash on and off though, it means you definitely need to take care of it as soon as possible.

Q: There is a red lightning bolt light that has came on my dash. What does this mean?

The light on the dash is coming on. The one that looks like a red lightning volt. What does this mean?
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hi there. The lightning bolt on the dash means that there is a problem with the electronic throttle control system in your vehicle. Get a code reader and scan the engine for any logged codes. The light may be on for a glitch and the electronic throttle control system needs to be reset. To reset the electronic throttle control system, perform the following:

  • Insert ignition key and turn to "ON" position but do not start the engine
  • Wait for all the warning lights to go out. The check engine light may remain on.
  • Slowly depress the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor.
  • Slowly release the accelerator pedal until it is all the way back up at the rest position.
  • Turn the ignition key to "OFF" position.
  • Start the engine and test the throttle by see if the engine will throttle up.

You would need to repeat this procedure any time the battery is disconnected or replaced. If there are any codes in the computer they may relate to the gas pedal position sensor, which could cause the lightning bolt to appear. If you need further assistance with the lightning bolt indicator lighting up on the dash, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

The red lightning bolt warning light on a Jeep dashboard is probably the most confusing dash light for any Jeep owner as its not as easy to work out what it means compared to other dash warning lights.

What does the red lightning bolt on my dash mean?

If you see this symbol means that there is an issue with your vehicle’s Electronic Throttle Control or ETC.

red lightning bolt on dash

How does this work? Well, the throttle is opened by a sensor that measures the amount of pressure applied to it. This information gets sent from the gas pedal every time its depressed through wires and sensors, then converted into an electric signal before being processed by a motor which controls the engine throttle based on the level of gas pedal input.

When you see the red warning light this means means that the gas pedal and throttle are not communicating properly.

Can you drive with electronic throttle control light on?

If you see the ETC light while driving, there is no need to stop but it is best to take your Jeep in to the auto shop for a full diagnostic. If there are no other illuminated warning lights visible or issues with acceleration, then continue to drive but make sure that you either perform a reset (see below) or take it to a mechanic for a check over.

How do you reset the red lightning bolt on the dashboard?

The red lightning bolt symbol on your dashboard may be trying to tell you that the pedal position has shifted, so there is an increased chance of miscommunication between motor-control sensors. This is caused by misalignment of the gas pedal over time. It’s easy enough just to reset it though and can be done in less than 10 minutes.

Follows these steps to reset the red lightning bolt light:

  1. Turn the ignition key to the “on” position but do not start the car.
  2. Press the gas pedal to the floor and slowly return it to the resting position.
  3. Turn the ignition fully on and start the car.
  4. Depress the gas pedal again to see if the engine responds well and the warning light extinguishes.

If it remains on, you’ll need to get your car looked at by someone who knows what they’re doing – a mechanic or Jeep specialist.

Dodge Charger, Electronic throttle body light flashing on the Dash, code P2173. Low Power problems..

Red lightning bolt symbol on, no check engine light, car has problems on first few starts

Just took apart my intake assembly for cleaning. 2007 Chrysler 300C 5.7L. Right at 200k miles. First time the throttle has ever been removed. Had lots of grime and black carbon buildup. I scraped the back of the throttle valve with a plastic spoon and engine degreaser, got it really clean. Put it all back together. On my way to work, lightning bolt happened and what I assume is limp mode, couldn't accelerate past 50 mph, stopped at the gas station and it was rough idle but still running. While running I pulled the ETC control plug, which didn't change anything except engine light came on. I turned the car off. Let it sit, replugged the ETC control plug, restarted and I was off with normal throttle control, no lightning bolt. But engine light still on. Just made it on time I'm about to head home, hopefully it won't repeat. But now that I've read this thread I bet I put the O-ring between the intake manifold and ETC in backwards, or perhaps it isn't quite seated right and allowing a leak. There is high vacuum in that area so it's dainty. Great info on this thread.

My car would not start but there's a red lightning bolt coming on my dashboard what does that mean

The lightning bolt warning light alerts you to a fault in the electronic throttle control system in your vehicle. This may be a faulty throttle body, the throttle body sensor or possibly the throttle body control motor which is what controls the opening and closing of the throttle body as the motor requires more fuel. There may be stored diagnostic trouble codes which will usually aid in finding the fault. Prior to requesting service, though, you can try to reset the system using the following steps: 1) Insert ignition key and turn to "ON" position but do not start the engine; 2) Wait for all the warning lights to go out. The check engine light may remain on; 3) Slowly depress the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor; 4) Slowly release the accelerator pedal until it is all the way back up at the rest position; 5) Turn the ignition key to "OFF" position; 6) Start the engine and test the throttle to see if the engine speed will throttle up. This procedure is typically applicable any time the battery is disconnected or replaced but may still be relevant in your case. If there are any codes in the computer that relate to the gas pedal position sensor, that could cause the lightning bolt warning light to appear as well. If the above procedure does not resolve the issue, please request service and the responding certified mechanic will get your car operational for sure. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic because we want you to make the most of your repair dollars and help you to get the best possible results.
