Hard Reset (BEATS Powerbeats Pro)

Rating: 2.3 - 3 reviews

One f the most popular truly wireless earbuds in the market currently is the Powerbeats Pro. However, like most true wireless earbuds, you may run into the occasional pairing or charging issue, which results in only one earbud working.

But don’t panic just yet; sometimes, the fix can be fairly simple; here are a few methods on how to solve the problem. We also spent days surveying users and our readers for what worked for them. Let’s dive in!

How To Fix Powerbeats Pro Only One Earbud Working:

Forget & Turn Off Bluetooth On Previously Paired Devices

The first thing you would want to do is to disconnect and “forget” your Powebeats Pro Bluetooth on any previously paired devices. A device that has been previously paired to your Powerbeats pro may try to maintain a connection with your Powerbeats Pro & may cause interference issues when trying to pair to a different device.

Reset Your Powerbeats Pro

The most common solution to this problem is to reset your device.

  1. Place the earbuds in the case
  2. Open the lid of the case
  3. Press and hold the system button for 15 seconds until the LED light flashes red & white
  4. Release the button
  5. Your device will continue to flash white, indicating the device has been reset.
  6. Now re-pair your Powerbeats Pro to your device.

This should solve the issue, but if this didn’t work for you, move on to the next step.

Update Your Firmware

The next step is to ensure your firmware is updated on both your Powerbeats pro & the device you’re trying to connect it to.

If you’re using an Apple device, your Powerbeats Pro should update automatically. Still, there may be instances where the update may be delayed, so it’s best to check if your device is up to date and manually update if your device isn’t using the current version.

you can do this on an IOS device by:

  1. pairing your Powerbeats Pro to your device
  2. Go to Settings > General > About
  3. Scroll down and select your Powerbeats Pro
  4. You will then be able to see your firmware version.

If you’re using your Powerbeats Pro with an android device, then you will need to download the Beats app for Android from the Google Play Store to check your firmware status.

If your firmware is not up to date, then you can manually update it through the Beats Updater App.

You will need a computer/ laptop for this, both mac and windows will do.

  1. Install the Beats Updater App
  2. follow the instructions on the screen
  3. Plugin your device’s charging case through a lighting cable
  4. If your device is not currently updated to the latest firmware, you will be able to update it here manually

Turn Off Automatic Ear Detection

Sometimes certain built-in features can cause one earbud to have connection problems with your device. A major feature that is known to cause this issue is automatic ear detection.

Automatic ear detection detects whether or not your earbuds are in your ear in order to pause/ play your music. Here’s how to turn off this feature in an IOS device:

  • Go to your Settings app.
  • Select Bluetooth
  • Click on the “i” icon next to Powebeats Pro
  • Toggle automatic ear detection off.

Clean PowerBeats & Case

There may be instances where the Powerbeats Pro isn’t pairing or charging properly because it isn’t correctly positioned in the charging case when pairing; this can be due to dirt in the case or earbuds. Additionally, sweat in the case of earbuds can cause issues with pairing and charging. To ensure the issue isn’t due to sweat or dirt, you’ll want to clean both the charging case and earbuds and make sure the earbuds are completely dry when back in the case.

  • Remove the earbuds from the case.
  • Clean the charging contacts on your device by using a cotton swab lightly dampened with warm water
  • Clean the charging pins of the case with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with warm water.
  • And finally, use a dry lint-free cloth to clean the rest of the Powerbeats pro and case.

A Few Other Methods Which Worked For Some Users & Our Readers:

We reached out to users who had similar issues as well as some of our readers to see what solved their issue. Here’s what they had to say.

Press Down on the Earbud that Doesn’t Charge While in The case

One of our readers fixed found a solution to this issue by simply pressing down on the earbud that doesn’t charge; before doing this, you will need to plug in the charger to the case.

Drain The Battery

One user solved this issue by draining the battery of both the case and earbuds then recharging it again.

Slightly Move Earbuds While In The Case

One user says she solved her issue by sliding the main screen of her IOS device to the right to display the battery levels of the Powerbeats pro, then open the Powerbeats Pro charging case. You should now see the case on your device’s screen s well as view each earbuds battery percentage individually. While in the charging case, your Powerbeats Pro should both individually show a ‘bolt of lightning’ icon next to each of them to indicate the device is charging.

If you don’t see a lighting icon next to one of them, then slightly move that earbud around while still in the charging case until it displays the ‘bolt of lightning’ image on the screen. When both earbuds display the lighting icon, carefully close the lid, and it should be working.

Dry Your PowerBeats Pro

One of our readers says sweat in her case was causing the issue. All she needed to do was dry off the earbuds and the connectors, and that resolved her issue.

Pair & Disconnect Your Powerbeats Pro With a Previously Paired Device

One of our readers says what solved his issue was to connect his Powerbeats Pro to a previously connected device then disconnect from the device. Put the earbuds back into the case and reset the Powerbeats Pro. Now reconnect it to the new device.

Use a Different Charging Device for your Powbeats Pro

One user found that simply charging his Powerbeats Pro on a different device solved the issue. So if you were previously charging your device on a wall outlet, try charging it on your PC.

Pair To a Different Device and wait 5 minutes Before Reconnecting

One user says he fixed his issue by unpairing his Powerbeats Pro from his device, turning his device’s Bluetooth off, placing them in the charging case, connecting it to a different device such as a PC, and waiting for 5 minutes before pairing them back to your original device.

Final Thoughts

Unfortunately, this seems to be a common problem among Powerbeats Pro users, but one or a few of these methods should work. If none of these methods seemed to work for you, then the next step is to reach out to Apple for a replacement. If your warranty is still valid & they confirm that the earbuds are, in fact, damaged, then they should send you a replacement. I hope this helped!

We have arranged these factors from the most basic ones to the worst cases so that hopefully you can progress safely. By the end of this guide, you will most likely find a permanent fix for your Powerbeats Pro connection problems.

Let’s dive in!

  1. Clean Both Earbuds and Case
  2. Use the Beats-Supported App
  3. Avoid Bluetooth Connection Conflicts
  4. Disconnect Your Powerbeats Pro and Pair it Again
  5. Reset Your Powerbeats Pro
  6. Update the Firmware on Powerbeats Pro
  7. Reach Out to Apple

How to Fix Powerbeats Pro Connection Problems: 7 Ways

1. Clean Both Earbuds and Case.

First things first, you will want to find out if your Powerbeats Pro is not working properly due to unsuccessful charging. You may find that one earbud may have been charged but not the other one. Additionally, you will also want to make sure that there is no dirt on the case or the earbuds. Even adding a custom cover for the Powerbeats Pro case can hinder the proper contact for the charging process.

Go through the following tips and take your time to do it while testing to see if it helps:

  • Clean the earbuds and the case with a microfiber cloth. Make sure that everything is dry before placing the earbuds back to the case.
  • Make sure to place the earbuds properly in the case so it both have proper contact with the charging connection.
  • If it fails to charge, try to press and hold the reset button while the earbuds are in the case. Refer to Method 5 below on how to reset your Powerbeats Pro.

2. Use the Beats-Supported App.

If you can charge your Powerbeats Pro successfully, then you may want to shift your attention to the battery status of your device. This is to identify if there are any issues with the battery itself.  Depending on which device you’re using, the following steps will help guide you in doing it:

For iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch

  1. First and foremost, turn on your Powerbeats Pro and pair it with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  2. Then, make sure that your earbuds are securely seated inside the charging case and keep the case open.
  3. Now place your unlocked iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch within 2 inches range of your Powerbeats Pro.
  4. Finally, look for the card that shows the battery level of your earbuds.

For Android Devices

    1. Go ahead and turn on your Powerbeats Pro and make sure it is paired with your Android device.
    2. Then, make sure that your earbuds are securely seated inside the charging case and keep the case open.
    3. Now download the Beats app for Android and install it in your Android device.
    4. Finally, launch the app, and you will see the details of your Powerbeats Pro.
    5. Take note of the battery life of the device, which will appear right on top of the given name for your Powerbeats Pro.

For Mac or Windows Computer

  1. Go ahead and place your earbuds securely inside the charging case.
  2. Then, connect the case to your computer using a lightning USB cable.
  3. Now download the Beats Updater app and install it on your computer.
  4. Finally, launch the app and see the details of your Powerbeats Pro. You can also use this app to update the firmware of your Powerbeats Pro.

If you happen to find that the battery drains too fast or experiencing and abnormalities, then you will want to proceed to the last method in this guide (Method 7). The method will discuss on how you can arrange an inspection of the device and possibly have it exchanged for a newer pair (depending on whether you’re still on the warranty).

3. Avoid Bluetooth Connection Conflicts.

One of the other most popular issues with the Powerbeats Pro has been the constant intermittent connection which users have been experiencing.

When in such a case, you will want to ensure that signal interference is not what’s causing the conflict for your Bluetooth connection. It is known that Wi-Fi uses the same frequency as your Bluetooth, hence make sure you avoid devices that have their Wi-Fi connection turned on. Also, avoid similar devices like microwave ovens and wireless telephones when using your device.

Additionally, it helps if you have your Powerbeats Pro connect to only one device at a time. The Bluetooth interference from your car audio system, another smartphone or laptop, can cause your Powerbeats Pro to be confusing and can result in irregularities in the connection. Also, make sure that you are within the effective range of Bluetooth and avoid physical obstruction between the Bluetooth connection.

4. Disconnect Your Powerbeats Pro and Pair it Again.

Staying on the Bluetooth topic, it is a possibility that the system file on your Powerbeats Pro that handles your Bluetooth connection may have gotten corrupted. This can happen, especially if the device you had connected your Powerbeats Pro encountered an improper shutdown procedure or internal system bug. The fix is pretty simple, as you only need to rebuild the connection profile by deleting it and doing the pairing process again.

Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Go ahead and turn on the Bluetooth of your device you want to pair with the Powerbeats Pro.
  2. Then, put the Powerbeats Pro earbuds inside the case and leave the case lid open.

Powerbeats Pro Connection Problems

  1. Now, press and hold the System button on the case until such time the front LED light blinks. This will delete the connection profile on both devices.
  2. After that, go back to your Bluetooth enabled device and open the Settings app, then tap on Bluetooth.
  3. Find your Powerbeats Pro on the connection list and tap on it.
  4. Finally, follow the instructions to complete the pairing process.

Powerbeats Pro Connection Problems

If your Bluetooth enabled device is an iPad or iPhone with an H1 chip, it offers a more friendly pairing process. After Step 3 above, you just need to hold the device within 2 inches of the reach of the case. A message will prompt on your unlocked iPhone or iPad with on-screen instructions for the pairing process.

Having renewed the Bluetooth connection settings of your devices, you should expect to use your Powerbeats Pro with a consistent connection. Be sure also to check for any interference after the process, as mentioned in the previous method (Method 3).

5. Reset Your Powerbeats Pro.

The solution which we’ve found to be most helpful was to reset the Powerbeats Pro completely and then pair it again. This allowed the Powerbeats Pro to be set up just as you first got it out of the store. Resetting helps to clear any software glitches and bugs that may have occurred over time with the device as you’ve been using it.

You know how the saying goes, “if it works, it works.”

  1. Go ahead and open the Settings app of your Bluetooth enabled device, then tap on Bluetooth.
  2. Tap the (i) icon next to your Powerbeats Pro, tap Forget This Device, and then Confirm.

Forget Bluetooth Device

  1. Now go back to your PowerBeats Pro case, place in the earbuds properly, and leave the lid open.

Powerbeats Pro Connection Problems

  1. Press and hold the System button of the case until the LED light will flash red and white to indicate a successful reset process.
  2. Finally, pair the devices again. You can refer to the previous method starting from step 4 for the pairing process.

After you have reset and paired your Powerbeats Pro back to your device, test it once by playing a song out of your Spotify/Apple Music to see if the song can be heard. The state of your Powerbeats Pro will right now be similar to the first time you paired and use it.

6. Update the Firmware on Powerbeats Pro.

If your Powerbeats Pro is running on an outdated version of the firmware, then it’s likely there may be bugs that are causing this error in connection. To make sure you have the updated bug fixes, you need to update the firmware of your Powerbeats Pro to the latest version.

Here’s how you can do it:

If you’re on an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch

  1. First and foremost, you will want to figure out which firmware your Powerbeats Pro is currently on. You can do this by going into your Settings app > General and then tap About.

Powerbeats Pro Connection Problems

  1. Next, from the About page, tap scroll down, and you should be able to see you your-name Powerbeats Pro in the list. Tap on it, and you should be able to see the firmware it is currently on. Take note that your Powerbeats Pro will need to be paired and connected with your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch to see it appear on the About page!
  2. Unfortunately, there is no update notes page provided by Apple that discusses the latest firmware available for Powerbeats Pro. So you will need to google your firmware version manually and see if it is outdated.
  3. So how do you update the Powerbeats Pro firmware if it is outdated? Well, your Powerbeats Pro gets automatically updated along with your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch every time an iOS or iPadOS is released. Hence there is no way to force an update onto the Powerbeats Pro. To check for the latest iOS or iPadOS updates, simply go into your Settings > General > Software Update and then Download and Install any available update.

Powerbeats Pro Connection Problems

If you’re on Mac, Windows or Android:

  1. Go ahead and download the Beats Updater app and install it on your computer.

Beats Updater App for Mac and Windows

  1. After a successful install, launch the Beats Updater app.
  2. Now place your earbuds securely inside the charging case and connect the case to your computer using a lightning USB cable.
  3. Finally, click on View the latest software version option and click on the update if applicable.

7. Reach Out to Apple.

If absolutely none of the above solutions have managed to be effective, then we highly suggest that you bring in your Powerbeats Pro for inspection by an Apple-certified technician. It’s worth considering that you may have bought a pair of Powerbeats Pro that was defective. You can avail their services are your nearest Apple Store. It will be helpful if you can show them what issue are you experiencing with the Powerbeats Pro. Also, include what methods you did in the attempt to fix the problem yourself.

Please make sure that you check your warranty options first before heading out to the store for the repair/replacement. Understanding which of the warranty options that are available to you helps cut down the costs as the repair/replacement costs can be expensive for some. Additionally, if you’ve just recently bought your Powerbeats Pro, then understand that you have up to 14-days for returns and refunds of the item. So be sure to make use of that!

Apple Repair Support

Once the repair is done, make sure to test it before leaving the store. The issues you are experiencing should be gone after that. What do you do if you don’t have an Apple Store in your area? Well, you can check the available support in your place on this page. Apple will provide you an option where you can book a repair appointment online. The only caveat to this is you will then have to send them your Powerbeats Pro through a courier. They will then repair it in their lab while you can monitor the repair progress on their website.

For more information regarding this repair procedure and other alternatives, you can obtain by calling directly or live chatting with the Apple Beats Support team here: Click on More > Beats by Dre > Wireless Connectivity. If you are experiencing any other issues, you can opt to select that from the selection menu and then continue from there.
