The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M is a 28 nm DirectX-11 graphics card for high-end notebooks. It was introduced in Fall of 2014 and is based on the Maxwell GM204 architecture. The clock rates specified by Nvidia are 924 MHz (+ Boost) for the GPU and 1250 MHz (5000 MHz effective) for the up to 6 GB of GDDR5 memory.

Architecture

Just like the mid-range GM107 chip (GeForce GTX 860M), the GM204 is also based on Nvidia's new Maxwell architecture, which replaces the previous Kepler generation. Among other changes, Nvidia have restructured the streaming multi processors (SMM) in order to increase workload and efficiency. Now each SMM contains only 128 shader units and 8 TMUs, which is noticeably less than an equivalent Kepler GPU. The GM204 features four GPCs, and each consists of four SMMs. But, in the GeForce GTX 970M, Nvidia have deactivated 6 of 16 SMMs. As a result, only 1280 shader ALUs and 80 TMUs are active. In addition, there are 48 ROPs in three clusters with 16 units each.

The memory interface has a bandwidth of 192-bits (3x 64 bit). Thanks to an improved compression algorithm, the connection to the GDDR5 memory should be significantly more efficient per MHz. Furthermore, the L1 (96 KB per SMM) and L2 caches (2 MB) have been significantly increased to lower the needed bandwidth.

Although the GM107 and the GM204 both belong to the Maxwell generation, the newer and larger GM204 has several additional features and changes. Aside from the improved polymorphic engine in the SSMs, it is also the first Nvidia chip to support DirectX 12 Feature Level 12_1.

Performance

Thanks to the increased efficiency, the GeForce GTX 970M performs somewhat better than the former top model, the GTX 880M and should sit comfortably as the second fastest model after the GTX 980M. According to our benchmarks, it is about 15 % faster than the GTX 880M depending on the scenario. The GTX 980M is a further 20 to 30 percent faster than the GTX 970M. Overall, the GTX 970M is fast enough to run even the most demanding games with highest details and FullHD resolution. Additional quality features like anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering are also not a problem for this card in most titles as of 2014.

Features

Most of the features are identical to the GeForce GTX 800M series. With the GTX 970M, there can be up to 4 active displays possible, but this will likely decrease due to Optimus. Displays can be connected with a maximum resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels via DisplayPort 1.2 or HDMI 2.0 (no HDCP @ 4K). HD audio formats like Dolby True HD and DTS HD can be sent to a compatible receiver as bitstream. As with previous models, 3D Vision is not supported with Optimus.

The updated video processor VP6 supports the usual formats like H.264 and can also decode and encode H.265 with a resolution of up to 4K via the NVENC API. Several parallel streams, such as picture-in-picture in a Blu-Ray movie, are also possible.

Further features of the GTX 900M series, which are also partly supported by older cards, include Battery Boost (longer battery life during gaming), Shadowplay (recording of gaming videos up to 4K60p and 130 Mbit/s) and Gamestream (game streaming on Shield console). More information on these features are available here.

Power Consumption

The power consumption of the GeForce GTX 970M including its MXM board and memory should be about the same as a GTX 870M with a specified TDP of 100 Watt. Given the significantly higher performance despite the identical manufacturing process (28 nm TSMC), this can be considered a massive increase in performance-per-watt. Nevertheless, the graphics card can only be used in very large and heavy gaming notebooks with powerful cooling systems.

Under low load, dynamic clock rates help the GTX 970M to save energy. While idle, the Optimus technology also allows for the complete deactivation of the GPU in favor of the integrated processor graphics card.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M is a high end DirectX 11.2 graphics card for laptops. The card is not yet officially announced and therefore the following information is based on rumors and leaks. The card based on the GM204 Maxwell chip, that is already available in the desktop GeForce GTX 970 and 980. Thanks to the improved efficiency, the GTX970M should be clearly faster than the previous GTX 870M and even the old GTX 880M.

The GTX 1070 might be the mid-range flagship of the latest Pascal set of graphics cards, but their prices keep them out of the reach of most entry-level PC gamers. On the other hand, the GTX 1060 3GB is closer to being reasonably affordable at a price tag of $ 170. NVIDIA ’s xx60 cards have always been defined by entry-level prices with performance that knocks on the door of mid-range graphics cards – especially when overclocked. After taking the time to fully test the Pascal graphics card inside the GTX 1060 3GB, we can say without a doubt that it continues the trend.

The GTX 1060 3GB is much more cheaper than the GTX 960 as it costs $ 170. Compare this to the GTX 960, which came originally at a price of $ 199. Meanwhile, the AMD closest equivalent card is the RX 480 which costs $ 400. Spec for spec, this GTX 1060 3GB leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the GTX 960, by boasting 2 % more fps.

The GTX 1060 3GB has 3 GB RAM compared to the GTX 960 's 2 GB video memory. In our synthetic benchmarks, the GTX 1060 3GB blows past the GTX 960 and, amazingly, even the GTX 970 as well.

Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The GTX 1060 3GB consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the GTX 960 and it really justifies an upgrade. For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play F1 2019, World War Z, Battlefield V, Forza Horizon 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 at 62 fps to 69 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 65 fps.

For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Valorant at 101 fps to 101 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 101 fps. For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Valorant at 88 fps to 88 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 88 fps.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M is a high-end graphics chip, announced on October 7, 2014. It will be available in models with up to 6GB of GDDR5 memory. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M uses the Maxwell GM204 architecture and has 1280 CUDA cores. All of them operate at 924MHz, but NVIDIA’s GPU Boost 2.0 can dynamically increase that frequency.

The vast majority of VRAM is used to hold textures. Polygons, models, etc. only use a few MB of VRAM. A 1080p screenbuffer is 6MB. But each individual 2048x2048 texture takes 16 MB of VRAM (has an extra alpha channel so 4 bytes per pixel instead of 3 like a screenbuffer). Add in the MIP maps (lower-res versions of the same texture generated on the fly for overlay onto distant polygons) and you're up over 20 MB per texture. Moving to 4k textures quadruples the VRAM needed per texture.

I've got the 970m with 3GB of VRAM on my laptop. Running Skyrim at 1080p and a ton of mods with 2k textures (walls, trees, objects, floors, fire, etc), I'm at about 2.3 GB of VRAM used. I've deliberately avoided using 4k textures (not much point on a 1080p screen), and in some cases have opted for 1k textures to try to stay under the 3GB limit. The whole point of "zones" in games separated by loading screens is to reduce the number of textures which need to be loaded into VRAM at any given time. Each zone only requires a certain subset of all available textures.

If you plan to game at 4k, I would highly recommend 6GB VRAM over 3GB. That said, the 960m and 970m are probably underpowered for 4k displays. Although they use the same cores as the desktop GPUs, their capabilities don't quite align with the desktop GPUs with the same name/number. The 970m is about on par with a desktop GTX 960. The 960m (which uses an older core and I would personally avoid) is less capable than a desktop GTX 950.
