My honest review on Roblox
Roblox is a great game and has lots of interesting things made by the many creators out there that can fill anyone’s interests. It has all sorts of features out there that you can use for example designing your avatar to your hearts desire, Chatting with your friends in real life or your new online ones and playing all sorts of random games made by the community. No matter what if your a horror lover or a role play queen or king their is a game for you. Say that you didn’t want to play any games and want to be one of many creators in the community well welcome to the creation studio where you can make the impossible possible. Tho with every story there always is one downfall Hackers, scammers, weird online daters and bullies are all sadly in the Roblox community to everyone’s disappointment. All of them are hard to get rid of completely and lots of them are still roaming through Roblox carelessly so we must try our best to get them to leave so if you do See one in your game causing a disruption please go into the top left corner and and tap on report ( I think that’s what it’s called but I have forgotten ) and fill in all the information and hopefully they will be banned tho sadly sometimes they get away but we have to at least try. My conclusion of Roblox is that it is a great game and they regularly fix small little bugs so they game works perfectly it is a fun, enjoyable game that I would totally recommend so that is why I give it five stars
MY TRUE HONEST REVIEW
Anyways it’s a great game I suggest you playing it I mean the age rate is I think it’s seven but it’s an awesome game and I definitely suggest you playing it but if you don’t it’s just my opinion so you can just dislike my opinion. Everyone thinks different and is entitled to their own opinion, but what do you think?....
Honestly the best game I have ever played
Okay…so this game is SO FUN and what I feel like is a safe game for children from the age 8+ this is because Roblox will tag out any swear words (even stupid) you can also get rid of the chat function if you are uncomfortable with your children using it to talk, If someone is being rude to you or is being mean in general you can report them and it will all be fixed p.s I have not come across this often. Now that is all the safety features that I can remember from the top of my head but there is many more out there. Now this game provides you with many variety’s of safe games for you to play. If you have a particular taste of games you are sure to find one that you would really love and enjoy, Roblox is a great way to pass the time when you are bored! You can also be creative with your avatar they don’t give you many option when you first start since you have 0 robux (Roblox money) you can buy this for real money but you don’t have to in order to play Roblox you will not be missing out on any of the fun if you don’t get robux! So don’t think you have to get robux because you can use this game for completely free without paying any real money. So I honestly think that this game is completely fine and safe for your children it will be a great way for them to just relax and have fun with there friends or even family!

With a reported 64 million monthly active users across all platforms, it's little surprise that the user-generated games platform Roblox is often compared to Minecraft.
But its key difference is that those creating content in Roblox can earn real money through their creations, implementing their own in-game economies and monetisation systems.
Last year saw one Roblox creator make more than $3 million, while several others pocketed upwards of $1m to $2m. Roblox tells PocketGamer.biz that the top creators are now earning as much as $250,000 per month.
So what's it like to be effectively running business as a Roblox creator, especially when much of the community is so young?
Roblox creator Coeptus (who prefers to keep his real name private) is a university student and the developer of Welcome to Bloxburg, a game in the style of The Sims built entirely using Roblox's creation tools.
PocketGamer.biz reached out to him to learn more.
PocketGamer.biz: What was your introduction to the Roblox platform and when did you begin making your own games on it?
Coeptus: I created my first account on Roblox roughly nine years ago and started playing some of the popular user-created games at the time. These were really fun and unique, which sparked my interest for Roblox.
After about a year of just playing, I started experimenting with creating my own games. The first ones were very basic, consisting mainly of prebuilt models such as cars, houses and trees that you could easily add to your game.
Actually being able to create something of my own really caught my interest, so from that point I started focusing more on making games rather than playing them.
Did you have any prior game development experience? How big a learning curve was Roblox development?
I had no actual development experience before finding out about Roblox, but had quite a large interest in computers and video games.
That was never really an issue though, because creating those quite basic first games felt fun and relatively easy. You don’t need to know everything about the Roblox platform to start creating something, which makes the learning curve quite forgiving.
I just published the game to the Roblox website under a completely unknown name and waited.Coeptus
By changing and experimenting with the prebuilt models, I learned more and more. I eventually started creating my own scripts and models from scratch.
Roblox, as well as individual developers, are also actively working on creating tutorials designed to provide developers with more insight into the process of developing on the Roblox platform.
This makes it even easier for aspiring developers to get started and find helpful information.
How did you get Roblox players to notice your creations?
I didn’t really do anything to advertise my game when I first released it, because I intentionally wanted to keep the number of players down.
The game had never been properly tested on a larger scale, so I wanted to make sure that everything worked as expected.
Instead, I just published the game to the Roblox website under a completely unknown name and waited.
After the first day, about 20 players had joined. The next day that number grew to 50, then 100, and then 200 and so on.
A couple of weeks later, a few thousand were playing. Eventually, players were writing about the game on social media and uploading videos of themselves playing on YouTube.
This boosted the player count even further and it has been growing ever since.
This is a really cool aspect of the Roblox platform. Even though there are millions of games and experiences published on the platform, people will find your game and they become your biggest advocates that then draw in others to try it.
What was your approach to monetisation and how long was it before you started making money?
My goal is to allow people to experience most of the game without having to pay anything, while also having some options for players that want to buy special things.
The game currently has a few different products that players can choose to purchase.
The game has its own basic economy, where virtual currency is used to buy things like new furniture.Coeptus
Right now, the game is still in the development stage, so players have to pay a small early access fee of 25 Robux (Roblox’s virtual currency, worth $0.25) to be able to play the game.
The plan, however, is to make the game completely free-to-play once it’s finished.
The game has its own basic economy, where virtual currency is used to buy things like new furniture or additions to your house.
Players primarily earn this currency by completing different tasks and mini-games while playing, but a player can also choose to buy the virtual currencies directly using Robux.
For this, there are a few different packages in various price ranges where the more expensive ones offer a slightly better deal.
There are also permanent upgrades, called game passes, that can be bought once per player. These can give players the ability to build larger houses, unlock cosmetic items, acquire exclusive furniture or take advantage of other certain benefits while playing.
I developed the game in my spare time while studying. Because of that, it took a couple of years to create and release the first playable version.
As the number of players increased during the first month, I started to earn some money. That has then continued to grow along with the number of players.
How many people have played your games in Roblox and roughly how much are you making from the platform?
As of today, around 300,000 unique players play the game each day and it has accumulated roughly 160 million play sessions since its release on August 1st 2016.
The game has been doing much better than I ever could have imagined, which has been truly amazing. I’m extremely glad and grateful that so many people play and enjoy the game, and I’m also grateful for the opportunity it has given me to pay for upcoming university studies.
Is Roblox a platform on which developers can grow a viable business? Do you communicate with other Roblox developers to discuss your creations?
Based on my experience, I’d definitely say so. Roblox has grown massively over the last couple of years and it seems like they are beginning to focus more on the business aspect of development on the platform, which is great.
Hopefully this trend will continue, making it even better and more rewarding for development teams.
Most developers communicate extensively though social media and chat apps. Developers also form teams for new projects, discuss ideas and share advice.
It really feels like a community, both for the players, but more importantly for the developers.
What is the dialogue like between you and the Roblox team?
Roblox has a special forum where developers and company employees can discuss anything related to the platform, often ranging from planned updates and feature requests to general feedback.
More recently Roblox introduced a developer relations team dedicated to communicating with individual developers and providing support for the projects developers are working on.
Those additions have been very positive and I certainly hope Roblox continues improving developer dialogue even further.
Do you have any other Roblox games/creations in the pipeline?
I have a few ideas and prototype games, but at the moment I’ve decided to focus entirely on improving my current game, Welcome to Bloxburg, and keeping in touch with all the players who have provided productive feedback.
Releasing a different type of game in the future would definitely be interesting though.

Roblox responds to the hack that allowed a child’s avatar to be raped in its game
There’s a special place in Hell for people who think it’s funny to rape a 7-year-old girl’s avatar in an online virtual world designed for children. Yes, that happened. Roblox, a hugely popular online game for kids, was hacked by an individual who subverted the game’s protection systems in order to have customized animations appear. This allowed two male avatars to gang rape a young girl’s avatar on a playground in one of the Roblox games.
The company has now issued an apology to the victim and its community, and says it has determined how the hacker was able to infiltrate its system so it can prevent future incidents.
The mother of the child, whose avatar was the victim of the in-game sexual assault, was nearby when the incident took place. She says her child showed her what was happening on the screen and she took the device away, fortunately shielding her daughter from seeing most of the activity. The mother then captured screenshots of the event in order to warn others.
She described the incident in a public Facebook post that read, in part:
At first, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. My sweet and innocent daughter’s avatar was being VIOLENTLY GANG-RAPED ON A PLAYGROUND by two males. A female observer approached them and proceeded to jump on her body at the end of the act. Then the 3 characters ran away, leaving my daughter’s avatar laying on her face in the middle of the playground.
Words cannot describe the shock, disgust, and guilt that I am feeling right now, but I’m trying to put those feelings aside so I can get this warning out to others as soon as possible. Thankfully, I was able to take screenshots of what I was witnessing so people will realize just how horrific this experience was. *screenshots in comments for those who can stomach it* Although I was immediately able to shield my daughter from seeing the entire interaction, I am shuddering to think of what kind of damage this image could have on her psyche, as well as any other child that could potentially be exposed to this.
Roblox has since issued a statement about the attack:
Roblox’s mission is to inspire imagination and it is our responsibility to provide a safe and civil platform for play. As safety is our top priority — we have robust systems in place to protect our platform and users. This includes automated technology to track and monitor all communication between our players as well as a large team of moderators who work around the clock to review all the content uploaded into a game and investigate any inappropriate activity. We provide parental controls to empower parents to create the most appropriate experience for their child, and we provide individual users with protective tools, such as the ability to block another player.
The incident involved one bad actor that was able to subvert our protective systems and exploit one instance of a game running on a single server. We have zero tolerance for this behavior and we took immediate action to identify how this individual created the offending action and put safeguards in place to prevent it from happening again. In addition, the offender was identified and permanently banned from the platform. Our work on safety is never-ending and we are committed to ensuring that one individual does not get in the way of the millions of children who come to Roblox to play, create, and imagine.
The timing of the incident is particularly notable for the kids’ gaming platform, which has more than 60 million monthly active users and is now raising up to $150 million to grow its business. The company has been flying under the radar for years, while quietly amassing a large audience of both players and developers who build its virtual worlds. Roblox recently stated that it expects to pay out its content creators $70 million in 2018, which is double that of last year.
Roblox has a number of built-in controls to guard against bad behavior, including a content filter and a system that has moderators reviewing images, video and audio files before they’re uploaded to Roblox’s site. It also offers parental controls that let parents decide who can chat with their kids, or the ability to turn chat off. And parents can restrict kids under 13 from accessing anything but a curated list of age-appropriate games.
However, Roblox was also in the process of moving some of its older user-generated games to a newer system that’s more secure. The hacked game was one of several that could have been exploited in a similar way.
Since the incident, Roblox had its developers remove all the other potentially vulnerable games and ask their creators to move them over to the newer, more fortified system. Most have done so, and those who have not will not see their games allowed back online until that occurs. The games that are online now are not vulnerable to the exploit the hacker used.
The company responded quickly to take action, in terms of taking the game offline, banning the player and reaching out the mother — who has since agreed to help Roblox get the word out to others about the safeguards parents can use to protect kids in Roblox further.
But the incident raises questions as to whether kids should be playing these sorts of massive multiplayer games at such a young age at all.
Roblox, sadly, is not surprised that someone was interested in a hack like this.
YouTube is filled with videos of Roblox rape hacks and exploits, in fact. The company submits takedown requests to YouTube when videos like this are posted, but YouTube only takes action on a fraction of the requests. (YouTube has its own issues around content moderation.)
It’s long past time for there to be real-world ramifications for in-game assaults that can have lasting psychological consequences on victims, when those victims are children.
Roblox, for its part, is heavily involved in discussions about what can be done, but the issue is complex. COPPA laws prevent Roblox from collecting data on its users, including their personal information, because the law is meant to protect kids’ privacy. But the flip side of this is that Roblox has no way of tracking down hackers like this.
“I think that we’re not the only one pondering the challenges of this. I think every platform company out there is struggling with the same thing,” says Tami Bhaumik, head of marketing and community safety at Roblox.
“We’re members of the Family Online Safety Institute, which is over 30 companies who share best practices around digital citizenship and child safety and all of that,” she continues. “And this is a constant topic of conversation that we all have – in terms of how do we use technology, how do we use A.I. and machine learning? Do we work with the credit card companies to try to verify [users]? How do we get around not violating COPPA regulations?,” says Bhaumik.
“The problem is super complex, and I don’t think anyone involved has solved that yet,” she adds.
One solution could be forcing parents to sign up their kids and add a credit card, which would remain uncharged unless kids broke the rules.
That could dampen user growth to some extent — locking out the under-banked, those hesitant to use their credit cards online and those just generally distrustful of gaming companies and unwanted charges. It would mean kids couldn’t just download the app and play.
But Roblox has the momentum and scale now to lock things down. There’s enough demand for the game that it could create more of a barrier to entry if it chose to, in an effort to better protect users. After all, if players knew they’d be fined (or their parents would be), it would be less attractive to break the rules.

My house is packed with video game consoles, phones, and computers hosting a world of shiny AAA games and quirky indies, yet my 8-year-old daughter spends the bulk of her time in a free-to-play game called Roblox on whatever screen is in front of her. She even spends a chunk of her allowance on a Roblox Premium subscription.
She’s not alone. Roblox is the most popular game with 5- to 12-year-olds in the US, according to Rooster Money, and it topped the pocket money spending charts in the UK in 2020 ahead of Fortnite. The company recently began trading on the New York Stock Exchange and was valued at a staggering $45 billion. You can play it virtually anywhere, from an Xbox to a phone, laptop, or PC, and it boasts more than 32.6 million daily active users as well as 8 million active creators and developers spanning 180 countries. It’s completely free to make a Roblox account.
My 11-year-old son plays other games and says he’s not that into Roblox, but the fact that he’s often playing it when I look over his shoulder tells a different story. He says it’s one of the few games he can play with all his friends.
Let's get one thing straight. Roblox isn’t really a game. It's a free platform where players can dip in and out of different virtual worlds and play any game in them. It’s packed with user-created content spanning a dizzying variety of genres and titles. The graphics are basic, there are glitches and bugs galore, and even many of the most popular games lack polish. I didn’t get the appeal after watching my kids play, but then I joined in.
My daughter wanted me to play SharkBite first. She was on her phone, and I joined in on my PC. In SharkBite, one player is a giant shark and has to eat other players to win. Those cast as survivors grab weapons and try to kill or evade the deadly jaws. It’s rough around the edges—a boat collision left my daughter’s avatar floating around in a sitting position—but that didn't stop the shrieks and laughter as we tried to hide and inevitably got eaten.
One of the keys to the platform’s success is the ease with which you can invite friends to join you in different virtual worlds or games. They can spawn right next to each other at the click of a button. With open chat channels to friends on their phones, my kids are constantly negotiating which game to join. There are no lengthy downloads or loading screens, plus avatars and basic controls are universal. The sheer variety and quirkiness make exploration a lot of fun.
We also played Royale High, which is unlike anything I’ve ever tried before. I reached out to its creator, Callmehbob, who didn't want to share her real name.
“I created the game I've been wanting to play but couldn't find anywhere,” Callmehbob (also known as @Nightbarbie) says in an email. “Turns out, a lot of people were looking for the same type of a game too, and it exploded completely unexpectedly.”
Callmehbob started playing Roblox in 2007—yes, it's been around that long—but it wasn’t until 2017, at the age of 22, that she decided to start developing a game for the platform. Despite no prior experience, she turned her hobby into a full-time gig: Royale High has been played more than 5 billion times. She says the key to success is replay-ability, including ways to earn money in the game, and making a game that you yourself would want to play.
“There are so many players on Roblox, you will find your special, perfect audience,” Callmehbob says. “I'm still shocked to see how many players have my same mindset and like the same things as me.”
In Royale High, I attend English class in a school that resembles a castle. There’s an interactive spelling test (10/10 for me), then I rush to get the right book from my locker before chemistry. Later, I get ready for a dance by bathing and choosing a new outfit. After dancing around and drinking punch, I’m touched when I get voted king of the ball, a prize that comes with a bouquet of flowers and 500 diamonds.
“Developing Royale High has been a constant balancing act between making fun games to earn currency and creating fun shop items to spend that currency on (giving players a goal to work towards),” Callmehbob says.
There’s a delightful sweetness to Royale High, and it includes a wider magical world to explore beyond the school. At one point, my daughter and I discover a forest clearing with a campfire and all the ingredients we need to make smores. There are various mini-games and ways to find or earn currency you can spend on fabulous outfits and accessories.
“I think we helped contribute to bringing a whole new wave of people, by making a more feminine game, a style/genre I frequently search for and want to play but is somewhat difficult to find,” she says, talking about the growth in Roblox players. “Shout-out to the other female-oriented games before me that paved the way!”
This kind of gameplay is underrepresented in the wider games industry, which is still male-dominated, even though half of all gamers are female. There are countless violent or competitive games, but many people prefer a gentler pace or a different kind of gameplay.
Another of my daughter’s favorites is Dance Off, which is a mix of dance and fashion that challenges you to pick an outfit and hairstyle before taking to the stage for a performance. Each player rates the others to decide the winner. It’s repetitive, but perhaps that’s part of the appeal. My daughter has played it enough to have a Popular status. (“Popular” floats above her head while “Novice” floats above mine.)
“I have very fun childhood memories replaying games over and over again,” Callmehbob says. “Knowing what to expect can be very comforting, especially in a young person’s life, where they might be going through uncertain, rocky waters.”
First released in 2006, Roblox has grown steadily, but it surged during the lockdown in 2020, adding around 50 million monthly active users and 5 million active creators. The developer community is set to earn somewhere around $250 million for 2020, up from $110 million in 2019. While most creators are amateur Roblox players, some like Callmehbob have turned it into a full-time job, and the platform has also begun to attract professionals, like Swedish game studio the Gang.
A teacher in Singapore has even been using the platform to teach game design to students from 11 to 18 years old. Roblox is still rife with unimaginative clones of popular games, but there’s plenty of invention and innovation to be found. Plus, all of the building blocks and tutorials you need to get started are freely accessible.
“Roblox offers quite an easy starting point for students new to game design while also offering the opportunity to develop high-level coding, modeling, and game design skills,” says Philip Williams, head of Library Services at United World College of South East Asia's East Campus, via email.
The platform's in-game economy is Robux, which you can buy with real cash. Money for developers comes through premium payouts, which give them a share of subscription fees based on how much time players spend in their games or virtual worlds. Developers can also sell game passes and virtual assets, usually clothing and accessories, but in some games, you can buy vehicles, weapons, and special abilities. My daughter tells me you can identify “noobs” by their default outfits, which is why she wanted to subscribe.
Robux can also be used by developers to advertise their games within the platform. Discoverability is key when there are so many other virtual worlds to choose from. Roblox has a slightly confusing bidding system where the higher you bid the more often your ad will appear. Converting those ad views into profit is complicated. My kids say they rarely click on ads and discover most games by word of mouth.
Next up is Brookhaven, a role-playing game set in a large city. You can buy a house, drive various kinds of vehicles around the streets, and even get a job. My daughter leads me on a bank robbery, after which we escape through underground tunnels. Then I get a job as a pilot, we trigger an emergency, and we parachute back to the streets below. It’s chaotic and random, but undeniably fun.
Most Roblox players are under the age of 13, almost half are female, and I get the sense that the platform is keen to increase its appeal for older gamers–everyone I speak to says it’s not just for kids. That's especially true with kids who grew up with Roblox and continue to play it as they become adults.
But growing pains are inevitable. Roblox has largely built its player base as a family-friendly environment, yet now there are concerns about online dating and inappropriate behavior from some players on the platform. My kids chat and play almost exclusively with real-life friends and say they haven’t run into anything disturbing, but a few games I tried have a more adult vibe. Inappropriate language is filtered for younger players, and there’s human moderation, but a platform this large will inevitably have darker corners.
If you have worries, you can dip into Roblox's settings to choose who your kids are allowed to chat with, limit chat to friends only, and vet their list of friends. You can also set up account restrictions to dictate which games your child is allowed to play, or even turn chat off altogether.
Flee the Facility is another big favorite and proves a fitting finale. One player is cast as a beast and tries to hunt down survivors who have to hack computers to open escape doors. The beast emits a red light, and there are musical cues to let you know when they’re approaching. It’s reminiscent of Dead by Daylight and has the same addictive hook, with a real sense of peril, though violence is implied rather than graphically depicted. My daughter is the beast and shows no mercy as she hammers me into oblivion.
“Ha ha, die noob!” is the last thing I hear.
For all its flaws and quirks, Roblox is a hotbed of creativity. It caters to a wide variety of interests, and it has been a lifeline for my kids throughout lockdown—they've hung out with friends there almost every day when they couldn’t in real life.
Updated March 19: We've added some directions on settings you can tweak to limit who your kids can chat with in the game. We've also updated a few stats from the company.
