Best steam cleaners 2021 – reviews of the 10 top steam mops

  • We earn a commission for products purchased through some links in this article.

  • Looking for the best steam cleaner? We’ve reviewed the top ten steam mops from Bissell, Shark, Vax, Black and Decker, Polti, and Kärcher. Steam cleaners come with attachments to clean wall tiles, shower screens, sinks, and (of course) your floors. Much like the best vacuum cleaners, they’re only getting smarter, and the latest models come with convertible designs to get into even the tightest corners in your home.

Many people use the best steam cleaners to keep marks and stains at bay, but another big advantage of owning a steam mop is the way they kill germs. Steam cleaners kill 99.9% of bacteria, which makes them perfect for bathrooms and kitchen use. What’s more, they do it without any nasty chemicals, just the power of the stream.

What is the best steam cleaner in 2021?

Caramel has voted the Vax Steam Fresh Combi S86-SF-C as the best steam cleaner in 2021. Alternatively, if you want something a little more versatile, then the Polti Vaporetto Smart 100_B also comes (very) highly recommended. Read on to check out the full reviews.

    Best steam cleaners

    1. Vax Steam Fresh Combi S86-SF-C

    Best steam cleaner overall

Vax Steam Fresh Combi S86-SF-C Steam Mop

    Capacity: 460ml
    Dimensions: H: 116cm W: 31cm D: 30cm
    Weight: 3.7kg
    Power: 1600 watts
Reasons to buy: Onboard tools, handy triangular brush
Reasons to avoid: Small fill hole

This upright steam mop has a triangular floorhead as well as the floorhead, two cloths and carpet glider. You can pop the head off to reveal a medium-sized triangular brush perfect for scrubbing.

This is a traditional upright steam cleaner with a pop-out handheld in the middle for use with detail tools: squeegee with cloth cover for upholstery, concentrator, scraper and four different brushes. Unusually, there’s onboard storage for six tools on the back of the upright. There’s also a mesh bag for the others and lugs for storing the 8m cord.

The 460ml tank pops off for easy filling. There’s also a 200ml detergent tank and a bottle of detergent included. We used this with the floorhead and carpet glider to clean the tide marks on an old, colourful rug. It worked to great effect and we only needed to switch to the brush a few times.

It’s ready to use in less than 30 seconds and when you take your finger off the steam trigger it stops 2 seconds later. Steam is variable and powerful on the top setting. We also liked the fact that it can stand up independently when you need to pause cleaning.

    2. Polti Vaporetto Smart 100_B

    Best powerful steam cleaner

    Capacity: 2 litres
    H 52.4 x W32.4 x D32.4 cm
    5 kg
    1500 watts
Reasons to buy: Large water tank, can clean under low-lying furniture
    Reasons to avoid: Pricey

The Polti Vaporetto Smart 100_B has a large 2 litre water tank that feeds the boiler, but you can pop out the tank at any time for a refill without waiting for it to cool down or even disrupting cleaning.

The body boasts variable steam control and an anti-calc collector. You can stow the cleaning head and two-part tube when not in use, or to pause, and there’s onboard storage for tools. It comes with a squeegee with cloth cover for cleaning upholstery, plus concentrator, scraper and two sizes of nylon brush.

The floorhead is an unusual shape: neither triangular nor a rectangle. It comes with a floor glider and one cleaning pad. The floorhead is slim to fit under furniture and has a small brush on the back so you can reverse slightly to scrub stains. It also features a small tank for optional detergent.

Steam took over one minute to heat up and then can stop and start instantly with a press of the trigger. It’s powerful: the lowest setting is similar to the steam offered by most steam mops, the highest setting is much stronger.

We loved using the Polti. The controls are excellent, the design is practical and it feels weightless in the hand, so much so that you can lift it to clean tiled walls, windows, curtains and more.

    3. Black & Decker 10-in-1 Steam Mop FSMH13E10

    Best lightweight steam cleaner

    Capacity: 350 ml
    H: 115cm W: 30cm D: 15cm
    1300 watts
Reasons to buy: Lightweight and easy to store
    Reasons to avoid: Short cord

The design of the Black & Decker 10-in-1 Steam Mop FSMH13E10 is immensely lightweight. It has a great selection of tools and manoeuvrability is easy. It’s also one of the best options in terms of storage, so if you’re short on space, look no further.

The Black & Decker 10-in-1 Steam Mop FSMH13E10 took just 12 seconds to heat up and start cleaning. You can’t choose different steam levels, so controls are a simple on and off. While it’s great on floors, we did find that tile and wood took a while to dry after use.

The middle pops out and converts to a handheld. It made quick work of lifting grime from upholstery, tiled walls and more. At this price, it’s a great buy and does more than most steam cleaners.

    4. Bissell PowerFresh SlimSteam 2234E

Best steam cleaner for speedy cleaning

    Bissell PowerFresh SlimSteam 2234E

    Capacity: 300 ml
    H: 110cm W: 35cm D: 26cm
    4.74 kg
    1500 watts
Reasons to buy: Wall mount for convenient storage
Reasons to avoid: Handheld function is awkward to use

Pretty much all convertible steam mops have a handheld that pops out of the middle of the upright cleaner. This, however, is designed more like the best cordless vacuum cleaners. You hold the handheld and then add tubes below to clean floors. As a result, it’s nippy but top-heavy. It won’t stand up by itself then and there’s no carpet glider.

We liked the design and how easy it was to convert back and forth. We loved the plastic tray that clips to the underside and holds all four supplied tools (concentrator, scraper and two shapes of brush). If your steam cleaning is a mix of floors and fiddly smaller things then the Bissell is hard to beat because your tools are always on board and converting is a doddle.

There are a great many other thoughtful design touches. The fill hole for the 300ml tank is a good size and it comes with a jug. There’s a Velcro strap for stowing the 7.6m cord. There’s also a mesh bag for if you buy additional tools or don’t want to store them on board.

Cleaning is versatile and the two steam levels are good enough for all uses. It’s not the most powerful steam on test and yet it’s the cleaner we’d pick up and use again and again.

    5. Shark Klik n’Flip Automatic Steam Pocket Mop

    Best powerful steam mop

    Capacity: 380ml
    61 x 46 x 42 cm
    1200 watts
Reasons to buy: Two-year warranty, quick heating time, lots of accessories
Reasons to avoid: Big floor pad isn’t great on tough corners

Uniquely, the Shark’s floorhead and cleaning pad are double-sided, giving you twice the surface area for more cleaning. It comes with a second cleaning pad, too. It’s only designed for cleaning floors, so there are no accessories except a filling jug. We like the way this clips to the pole, so you always have it to hand. There’s space to coil the 8m power cable too.

There are two steam levels: a button on the front of the body of the cleaner cycles between these and off. It heats up in under 30 seconds.

On the main side of the pad, you steam clean as normal. The pad is big and rectangular, ideal for cleaning large areas fast. Flip the floorhead back on itself to use the other side, then push the whole machine down to get a powerful steam blast that sprays directly forwards onto the floor.

After use, squeeze two tabs together on the body of the cleaner and the floorhead comes open, so the cleaning pad falls off into the laundry basket with no need to touch it.

If you only want a steam cleaner to clean floors, this is powerful and the double-sided floorhead and two cleaning pads mean it can tackle large homes with ease. Check out the best shark vacuums for more options.

    6. Hoover Steam Capsule 2 in 1 CA2IN1D

    Best value steam cleaner

Hoover Steam Capsule 2 in 1 CA2IN1D review

    Capacity: 350ml
    H: 117cm W: 31cm D: 18cm
    1700 watts
    Reasons to buy: Ergonomic, self-standing
Reasons to avoid: Heavy to steer

The Hoover Steam Capsule 2 in 1 CA2IN1D is an all-rounder. It’s got a design that many in search of the best steam mop will gravitate towards. Our first impression was that it’s an annoyance to assemble it, as you’ll need a screwdriver. It does look great though, and the handle is very ergonomic.

It comes with a steam hose and a number of accessories, such as brushes and cloths. There isn’t any on-board storage, but the power cord is long, at 7 metres.

You can pop out the handheld from the back of the Hoover Steam Capsule, and there are three levels of steam controls to choose from. It’s possible to pop off the steam head, leaving a scrubby triangular brush which is amazing at picking up stubborn areas of dirt and grime.

    7. Kärcher SC 2 Upright EasyFix

Best steam mop for hard floors

Karcher SC2 Upright Easyfix Steam Cleaner

    Capacity: 400ml
    H: 119cm W: 17cm D: 31cm
    1600 watts
Reasons to buy: Great on hard floors, slim and nifty design
Reasons to avoid: No carpet glider

The Kärcher SC 2 Upright EasyFix is powerful and easy to control. It doesn’t come with carpet attachments, but its ‘stick’-style design is reminiscent of a cordless vacuum cleaner, which is very pleasing for those who love the convenience. You can even clip away the cord so it doesn’t get stuck underfoot.

In terms of attachments, it’s a little minimal. It just comes with one microfiber pad for the floorhead and a descaling cartridge. There is no spare for when the pad is in the wash, and nothing for carpets either.

On hard floors it was very effective, with strong steam that lifts dirt with ease. There’s also a descaling cartridge to tackle limescale in tap water: the machine alerts you when it’s time to replace it.

Ideal Home’s rating: 4 out of 5 stars

    8. Thane H2O HD

    Best folding steam cleaner

    Capacity: 450 ml
    125cm (H) x 32cm (W) x 28cm (D)
    3.4 kg
    1500 watts
Reasons to buy: Can fold away nicely, long power cord
    Reasons to avoid:

This upright steam cleaner boasts a “why didn’t I think of that” design which folds in half for easy storage in smaller cupboards. Simply squeeze the circles on both sides to fold it. And you can wrap the 6m cord around lugs for storage, even when it’s folded. The curvy green and black design, with colourful lights, is attractive too.

Assembling it for first use requires a screwdriver to attach the triangular floorhead, which comes with one cloth and a carpet glider. After that, it stays on and you pop out the middle bit if you want to convert to handheld cleaning. The fill hole on the 450ml tank is very small but there’s no funnel.

The Thane boasts three steam levels but all switches are on the front of the handheld, so you have to reach down to turn it on or off, or change setting. As an upright, you must use the floorhead. The concentrator nozzle and two brushes attach directly to the handheld.

There’s also a 30-inch extension hose to which you can connect the window squeegee (with cloths to adapt it for garments and upholstery) or duster attachment. The latter was our favourite tool thanks to its “coral” cover with fat, absorbent cloth fingers that pick up dust brilliantly.

Startup takes around 30 seconds but after that it’s quick and responsive. Aside from a few niggles, we liked the design and it cleaned floors and more well.

Ideal Home’s rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

    9. Kärcher SC5 Easyfix

    Best canister steam cleaner

    Capacity: 2 litres
    43.90 x 30.10 x 30.50 cm
    6 kg
    2200 watts
Reasons to buy: Removes extremely stubborn dirt, works on carpet, 6m cord
Reasons to avoid: You have to wait for it to heat up

This premium, cylinder-style steam cleaner is a completely different animal from a steam mop. It does an outstanding job of cleaning so much more than floors and it can keep cleaning for hours. It has a 6m cord and a large 1.5 litre water tank and the water is then pumped into a pressurised steam tank. This means you can refill the machine at any time, even when it’s in use, without pausing your cleaning.

The only downside of its constant, powerful steam is that you must wait 3 minutes for it to come up to temperature initially. Tools and onboard storage are superb. The 2m hose can be extended with one or both sections of lance, for cleaning floors and high-up or hard-to-reach places.

Then you can attach various tools. There’s a large, rectangular floor head which comes with two Velcro cloths and a clip-on carpet glider. This steam cleaner also has a large square brush with cloth and large round brush – with space on the Kärcher to stow.

But there’s more! Lift a flap on the cleaner’s body and you’ll also find a small, round brush for detailed cleaning and a concentrator nozzle. Outstanding selection of steam cleaning tools and storage. The only thing it’s missing that we care about is a window squeegee. However, Kärcher offers a wide selection of accessories if you care about this or other tools.

Cleaning was outstanding – the floor head is much more than a floor head. It’s on a lightweight lance, so we found ourselves instinctively lifting it up and cleaning the bathroom’s tiled walls, right up to the ceiling. This took two minutes and the room has never been so clean. You could do the same with a mattress. This is steam cleaning in 3D.

Steam is highly controllable, with a trigger under your finger and a dial on the body. The top setting didn’t seem OTT but dialling it back to its lowest setting was very impressive. Wooden floors were treated gently and were left nearly dry. The Karcher steam cleaner’s tools are equally impressive. We had to dial it back to avoid the bathroom becoming a steam room.

Ideal Home’s rating: 5 out of 5 stars

    10. Bissell Vac & Steam

Best vacuum and steam cleaner combi

    Capacity: 380 ml
    28 x 23 x 118cm
    1600 watts
Reasons to buy: Easy to fill water tank, 3-year-guarantee
Reasons to avoid: No handheld cleaning tools

The first rule of mopping or steam cleaning is that you vacuum first. You lift as much dust and hair as possible dry, then use water to lift the remaining grime. It therefore makes sense to have a machine that does both.

This Bissell does double duty, with a cyclonic vacuum cleaner followed by a steam mop. There are no handheld cleaning tools, it’s just for floors. It’s heavy (4.4kg) but does the job of two appliances.

Vacuuming is straightforward: stiff brushes help lift dirt but there’s no rotating brush bar. For steam cleaning you just need to fill the 380ml tank and add the fabric pad (it comes with two, one plain and one with lines to scrub dirt, each with a pocket for adding an optional fragrance disc). There’s no carpet glider because it’s really designed for hard floors.

The cyclonic vacuum is bagless, with a 950ml dust container. There are two steam levels and it takes just under 30 seconds to heat up. There’s an anti calc filter and lugs to store the 7.6m cable when not in use.

You can use each feature independently but the Bissell Vac & Steam is at its best when you use both at once to save time. You can whizz round the house at double speed if dirt isn’t too ingrained.

The Bissell is a jack of all trades, master of none. But it comes quite close to mastering both jobs. If you want to vacuum and mop every time it’s well worth your consideration.

Ideal Home’s rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

    Black Friday steam cleaner deals

Last year we saw some amazing Black Friday steam cleaner deals on brands like Bissell, Hoover, Vax, Black and Decker, Polti, and Kärcher. While many steam cleaners are available for under £100, some of the most expensive models on the market received some of the biggest discounts. The Polti Vaporetto Smart 100_B received a £50 discount, and we’re expecting more of the same great deals on some, if not all, of the best steam cleaners in our guide.

The best places to look for Black Friday steam cleaner deals would be Amazon, Argos, Curry’s, and (if you want their steam cleaner) Shark.

How we test our steam cleaners

Our tester Caramel has decades of experience of reviewing technology products, writing for, among others, The Evening Standard, The Express, The Guardian, The Independent, The Mail on Sunday, The Sunday Mirror, The Telegraph and The Sunday Times. She’s long been part of the Ideal Home family, and knows exactly what you’re looking for in a good steam cleaner. And when it comes to steamers, she’s an expert, having tried out the best clothing steamers for this year too.

With two teenage children and a pet dog to clean up after, Caramel has been able to give each steam cleaner a rigorous test at home over several weeks. She’s looked at every aspect of each cleaner, taking into account its ability to clean, to manoeuvre (taking into account its weight and the reach of its cable), the tools that come with it and therefore its versatility, and how easy it is to control.

How much should I spend on a steam cleaner?

The most straightforward steam mops start at £50, but up to £150 is average for a convertible upright. These are steam mops that double as smaller, handheld cleaners. Budget upwards of £300 for a cylinder model with much more steam power.

What are the different types of steam cleaner?

    Steam mop

If you only want to steam clean floors, consider a simple machine that doesn’t convert to a handheld. It will be light, easy to manoeuvre and you won’t have to store fiddly tools that you’ve no intention of using.

    Convertible steam cleaner

A.k.a. 2-in-1 cleaners, these are upright steam mops where the steam generator can pop out from the middle to be used as a smaller, handheld cleaner. They come with various tools for steam cleaning smaller stuff.

    Cylinder steam cleaner

For the ultimate in powerful, long-lasting steam, get a cylinder cleaner. They generate a constant flow of strong steam that make light work of anything. But they take up more cupboard space.

What else should I look for in a steam cleaner?

    best-steam-cleaners-Vax (6)

    1. Variable steam

If you have wooden floors, avoid models that don’t let you adjust the level of steam. You’ll want to dial back steam to its lowest setting to avoid damaging them. A good steam cleaner can use a small amount of steam, then pick up the moisture with the floorcloth, so the floor is left nearly dry. If in doubt, check with your flooring supplier in case they advise against steam cleaning.

    2. Powerful steam

At top whack, powerful steam is great for loosening stubborn grime. For example, you can bring old oven grills back to life or finally get bathroom taps squeaky clean.

    3. Steam cleaner tools

Convertibles and cylinders come with smaller tools as well as a floorhead. Expect brushes for scrubbing and a concentrator nozzle for a precise, powerful jet of steam. A mid-sized cleaning head with cloth is great for furniture and a squeegee is handy if you want to clean windows. If a steam cleaner comes with lots of tools, bonus points if it also comes with a way to store them.

    4. Steam cleaner cord length

This may matter, depending on where your power sockets are. We found a 4m cord was too short to reach our bathroom.

When used in larger spaces that have messier floors, like the kitchen, this product is less effective."—Kaitlyn Wylde, Product Tester

The Bissell Steam Shot Deluxe Hard Surface Cleaner weighs about 3 pounds but has a generous 20-foot power cord, giving you plenty of reach to tackle messes in the bathroom or kitchen or to banish wrinkles from clothing.

This cleaner includes an impressive number of valuable attachments that make the most of its abilities (and minimize some of its shortcomings). These include an accessory nozzle, a detail brush tool, a flat scraping tool, an angle concentrator tool, a grout brush tool, a fabric steamer tool, and a window squeegee tool.

The Steam Shot has a 6.6-ounce water tank, which is smaller than most steam cleaners, but in keeping with the petite size. As a result, it has a more limited run time, making this an excellent option for quicker clean-ups.

    What Testers Say

"Because the water tank is so small—just 6.6 ounces—we found ourselves being economical with the power button. While it's not hard to refill the canister, it is a hassle, so we relied on the included accessories even more."—Kaitlyn Wylde, Product Tester

    What We Don't Like
    • Relatively long heating time

A steam mop attachment and two microfiber pads make this unit ready to thoroughly sanitize your floors right out of the box. This Steamfast canister cleaner glides across sealed hardwood, laminate, tile, and other hard floors—leaving no residue behind and eliminating dirt in its path.

It comes equipped with a 45-ounce tank for up to 45 minutes of cleaning power. Like all boiler-equipped steam cleaners, you’ll need to allow 8 minutes for the unit to warm up and start producing steam.

    What Testers Say

"The 45-ounce tank is great for cleaning, but it makes it larger overall as a portable cleaner. It's easy enough to use and move within a room, but it is cumbersome to carry when the tank is full." —Katie Begley, Product Tester

Keep in mind that some stones are a no-go for steam cleaning. You should always check with your jeweler if you have any doubts about whether your precious stones are safe to clean this way.

Steam cleaners help keep our homes safe and clean by blitzing bacteria off all manner of floors and surfaces. Heat treatment requires nothing but tap water, meaning you can steer clear of harsh chemical cleaning products, and it has been shown to be effective at killing viruses like coronavirus.

In fact, the Government advises using a steam cleaner to disinfect items that you can’t launder or clean using regular detergents, such as soft furnishings, upholstery and mattresses.

Here are the GHI's top-rated steam cleaners:

How do I choose a steam cleaner?

There are two main types of steam cleaner, so consider what you want from yours before you buy:

    Steam mops

Compact and lightweight, steam mops are easy to set up and use. They work like regular mops but are much more powerful cleaners. Their handles have built-in water tanks that heat up in about 20 seconds. They'll need refilling more often than cylinder cleaners (below) as they're smaller, but this makes them far easier to manoeuvre around your home. Many come with a swivel head for reaching under furniture and kitchen appliances.

Though best at cleaning sealed hard floors, many steam mops can also refresh carpets and rugs when used with an attachable carpet glider. Most of the mops in our top 10 are 2-in-1 models that double up as handheld unitsfor cleaning hobs and tiles.

    Cylinder steam cleaners

Cylinder steam cleaners tend to be heavy, but they have wheels to minimise the need for lugging. They tend to offer the same functions as two-in-one steam mops, only with a more powerful steam output and a higher capacity water tank that needs less frequent refilling. They often come with multiple attachments that connect to the hose and tackle a range of household tasks. Some models can be used on upholstery but others won’t be suitable.

Key features to look out for

In addition to accessories, there are some extra features you may wish to consider:

    Water tank capacity

The smaller the water tank, the more often you’ll have to top it up. The larger the tank, the longer it’ll take to heat up before it’s ready to use, but it will last longer. Cylinder models tend to have large capacities, with some holding up to two litres, while steam mops tend to hold up to 450ml. Note whether the tank is detachable and easy to fill at the tap, or if you need to fill it with a jug (these are sometimes included).

Time to heat up full tank

How long a steam cleaner takes to heat up before it starts pumping out steam is largely determined by the size of the tank. This may be as little as 20 seconds for a steam mop and two minutes for a cylinder, but exact timings can vary greatly between models.

    Variable steam

Every model in our top 10, bar our budget handheld buy, offers variable steam settings, be it an adjustable control dial or buttons. However, if you’re only going to be using your machine for quick and simple tasks, one steam mode should get the job done just as well.

What steam cleaner accessories do I need?

The majority of steam cleaners come equipped with attachable accessories suited to an array of household chores. Standard steam mops that don’t have a detachable handheld unit usually only come with additional cleaning pads.

Cylinders and 2-in-1 mops, meanwhile, tend to feature extra tools such as scrubbing brushes, scrapers and grout cleaners for super-thorough cleaning. Other attachments for specific surfaces may include upholstery tools, ironing attachments for curtains and squeegees for windows and glass. Some models come with detergent, but this merely provides a fresh scent, rather than extra cleaning power.

    How we test

Our team at the Good Housekeeping Institute tests every steam cleaner on ceramic tiles, vinyl floors, inside an oven, gas hobs, windows, and, if applicable, carpet. We make sure to use them in the same way you would at home.

We test steam mops on hard flooring, noting how long it takes to remove food stains and muddy deposits. We look at how easy it is to move the mop around awkward areas and judge whether the floor looks shiny and streak-free after cleaning.

With cylinders and two-in-one models, we also test their attachments. We use the scrubbing brushes to remove dried food from the hob and clean tiles and grouting, and we put the squeegee to work brightening windows and glass shower doors. We use the carpet attachment to clean muddy footprint marks. We also look at whether the controls are easy to navigate, how quickly the cleaner heats up and if the attachments are easy to fit.

Kärcher SC5 EasyFix Premium Steam Cleaner

    Score: 93/100

Kärcher's most powerful steam cleaner is a large cylinder model that comes equipped with ample accessories to cover most household cleaning tasks. We found it straightforward to put together and quiet in use. There's no need to worry about running out of steam before you finish your chores (not literally, anyway!), thanks to a high-capacity 1.5-litre water tank and 0.5-litre steam boiler reservoir. The tank heats up in a surprisingly speedy three minutes and offers a great range of steam outputs.

This steam cleaner scored top marks for cleaning ceramic tiles in a mess-free fashion and it left vinyl flooring shiny without the need for scrubbing. It left our windows spotless and they dried quickly. It only dropped a couple of marks in our oven and hob cleaning tests, too.

The only downside was that it produced a lot of steam quickly, and with that came excess water, which meant some mopping up between cleaning. Still, this seems a small price to pay given its all-round excellent performance.

Runner-up steam cleaner and best steam mop

Polti Vaporetto SV440 Double Steam Mop

    Score: 92/100

If you prefer uprights to cylinders, look to this Polti model. Its flexible joint helps you clean under furniture and kitchen appliances, and its long 7.5-metre flex means you won't need to keep switching plug sockets. The water tank heats up in just 15 seconds, but it takes several seconds longer to emit steam, even when the ready light is on.

There's a variable steam dial and we found the trigger switch on both the stick and handheld unit handy. It's fitted with an anti-calc filter and there's the option of adding freshener to perfume the steam when cleaning and refreshing surfaces.

Performance-wise, it fared better on hard and sealed floors than carpet, where it struggled to remove embedded stains. The built-in bristles at the rear of the floorhead efficiently scrubbed stubborn grime off vinyl, but the bristles on the included round brush started to bend after tackling stubborn food remnants.

    Hoover Steam Capsule 2-in-1 CA2IN1D

    Score: 88/100

This robustly built steam cleaner has a triangular brush that can detach from the floorhead for scrubbing and deep cleaning. It offers low, medium and high steam settings and can convert into a handheld for tackling windows and worktops. It cleaned our oven of stubborn food deposits in less the seven minutes, which is a lot quicker than we could manage manually.

It comes with a great range of tools, including a carpet glider, but the round brush's bristles bent out of place after only one use. Floor cleaning requires screwing the handle into the main body - there's no need for a screwdriver, but it's stiff and fiddly all the same. We found the trigger switch uncomfortable to hold down for long periods and would have preferred a wider hole for refilling the 350ml water tank. That all said, it feels reasonably priced at just shy of £100.

Best steam cleaner for awkward spaces

Shark Floor & Handheld Steam Cleaner S6005UK

    Score: 87/100

If you're struggling to clean awkward spaces properly, this steam cleaner can help - once you get past the fiddly assembly requiring a screwdriver, that is. It has an extra-long flex, allowing you to clean all surfaces from one plug socket, and the mophead is easily maneuverable, turning into corners and tilting to reach under furniture. It comes with lots of useful tools and you can order more online, but we'd have liked a window squeegee and carpet glider in the box.

Its multiple steam settings include a steam blast feature for eradicating embedded floor stains, but there's no way of telling when the steam is ready until it starts emitting. The mophead detaches at the press of a button, no handling required, but the cloths shrunk when we washed them according to the manufacturer's instructions. It's not freestanding and the handle isn't telescopic, but it can also be used as a handheld. It's a trusty choice if you've got a lot of cleaning to do and not much time to do it!

    Best handheld steam cleaner

    Hoover SteamJet Handy

    Score: 86/100

It's hard to beat a reliable handheld steam cleaner for battling the most stubborn stains on your worktops and windows. This model cleverly concentrates its steam on one small area at a time to prevent messy splattering. It cleaned the inside of our oven in no time and the included wide window squeegee covered a large surface area of glass efficiently. However, this wasn't an enjoyable task, as the unit felt heavy and its handle proved too chunky to use comfortably for long periods.

We like the choice of wet and dry steam modes, and the trigger switch has a safety lock if you're worried about small children playing with it. Unfortunately, it takes over two-and-a-half minutes to heat up the water tank, which is longer than it takes to tackle most basic cleaning jobs! Said tank isn't see-through, either, meaning it has to fully run out of water before you know it needs refilling. With these downsides in mind, we'd only use it when we've got a lot of grime to clean. If its bulky weight doesn't put you off, it's an affordable and highly effective dirt blaster.

Polti Vaporetto Pro_95 Turbo Steam Cleaner

    Score: 86/100

This versatile cylinder model with adjustable steam output boasts a useful “turbo steam” function for banishing stubborn stains. The handy display unit lets you know when the 1.3-litre water tank is ready to go (in about six minutes) and when it needs refilling. It comes with plenty of attachments, including a carpet accessory for sanitising and refreshing carpets and soft furnishings. Everything fits onboard the machine for convenience and the full setup requires less storage space than most.

We were highly impressed with its cleaning performance. It was especially good at cleaning carpets, ceramic tiles and sealed floors, removing muddy stains with ease. The bristly brush at the back of the floorhead successfully scrubbed embedded dirt from our carpets, softening and lifting grime away without damaging the fibres.

Unfortunately, when cleaning smaller surfaces like ovens and hobs, the steam caused dirt to splatter onto the surrounding worktops, meaning more time cleaning. It's bulky and heavy when full and the flex is on the short side, meaning you may require an extension lead at times. Niggles aside, if you’re looking for a durable and efficient all-in-one, it's a worthy investment.

Shark Klik n' Flip Automatic Steam Mop S6003UK

    Score: 86/100

This Shark steam mop offers three steam levels, so you can select the necessary setting for each task. Its 350ml water tank heats up in under 30 seconds, but there's no indicator light to tell you when it's ready. It emits steam through the double-sided floorhead - simply flip it over for twice the cleaning area per machine-washable pad, before pressing the button to release and reload touch-free.

Its cleaning performance on hard floors was impressive, scoring just shy of top marks on vinyl flooring. It dried quickly and the cleaner left it shiny. Reaching under furniture and kitchen appliances was easy and the powerful steam blast feature helped to break up tough stains.

It has a long cord, but it felt quite heavy in use, and note that it’s only designed for use on hard and sealed floors. It's not free-standing, there's no detachable handheld unit and extra accessories must be ordered separately.

    Score: 85/100

This affordable steam mop is lightweight, compact and ideal for common spills and big clean-ups alike. Its removable 450ml water tank heats up rapidly and offers a decent range of steam outputs, but it takes a few seconds to register a reduction in power.

It scored highly in all our cleaning tests, leaving tiles shining and easily lifting dried-on stains from vinyl flooring. As a handheld, it cleaned our gas hob quickly. The oven results were similar, but removing dried-on dirt required some further scrubbing. It left out windows smeary, too.

It comes with an array of tools, including a grout cleaner, and its rotating triangular floorhead proved helpful when reaching into corners and awkward areas. It moved clunkily over hard flooring but we loved how comfortable it felt to hold and use. Overall, it offers fantastic value for money at under £35.

Best steam cleaner for cleaning windows

Dupray Neat Multi-Use Steam Cleaner DUP020WUK

    Score: 85/100

This cube-shaped steam cleaner is neat and stylish, with a wide range of functions and accessories. It's an effective machine that can reach a steam temperature of 135C , but its powerful steam output of 120g/min may prove too much for lighter cleaning jobs. It's heavy, weighing 5.6kg with a full tank of water, and it takes more than eight minutes to heat up. If time isn't an issue, it offers good value for its cleaning power and the range of jobs it tackles.

We were particularly pleased with its window cleaning ability. It blasted away embedded dirt, drying quickly and leaving the glass shiny and smear-free. It cleaned vinyl flooring with just as much ease, but it's too bulky to reach underneath appliances, despite its swivel floorhead. It proved less efficient at oven cleaning - despite softening and lifting dirt away, it splattered a lot of food deposits around the oven.

    Best budget handheld steam cleaner

    Tower RHS10 Handheld Steam Cleaner

    Score: 84/100

This handheld steam cleaner offers excellent value for money, but don't expect the bells and whistles of other models on our tried and tested list. It's a great budget buy for everyday maintenance clean-ups, effortlessly removing stubborn food residues on test. The wide squeegee tool included in the box lets you clean glass and windows quickly, but there's only one steam mode and you can't see when the water tank needs refilling. The power cord is short, too, meaning you'll have to plug it into a closer socket when you move between areas.

It produces a lot of water as it cleans, so much so that it dripped down our ceramic tiles and windows. If you can live with the need to wipe as you go or wait while your surfaces dry, it's a helpful little machine to have at your disposal.

Household Magic Washing Machine Cleaner Review and Demo: Does it Work?

Best steam cleaners 2021: The best for carpet, tiles, floors and more

Steam is an amazing thing for cleaning with. Without having to turn to harsh chemicals, steam can clean grout, kill germs, remove stubborn stains, get a hard floor to look amazing and even tackle dirty windows. With the best steam cleaner, you’ll never look back and you’ll have a sparkling house in a fraction of the time it would take using elbow grease.

At Trusted Reviews, we’ve reviewed every single major steam cleaner and we continuously get new products in for review to keep this list up-to-date. As we put every product through a variety of real-world tests, you can rely on our choices: we list the best cleaners that have been tested; we don’t just list products based on best-seller lists or user reviews.

We’ve selected a range of different steam cleaners and steam mops below, catering for every use and budget.

The best overall steam cleaner is the Karcher SC5 easyFix Premium Steam Cleaner

Steam cleaner type: Cylinder | Dimensions: 439 x 301 x 305mm | Accessories: Floor cleaning kit, EasyFix + extension tube (2 × 0.5 m), hand nozzle, detail nozzle, round brush (small), microfibre cover for manual nozzle | Water tank: 1.5-litres | Steam pressure: 4.2bar

    The pros:

    • Staggering steaming power
    • Very fast hard floor mopping
    • Good tool selection with storeage
    • Great VapoHydro cleaning
    • Easy to carry

    The cons:

    • High price
    • No squeegee window tool
    • Cable too short (5.9m)

Yes, it’s expensive, but there’s a good reason for that: the Karcher SC5 easyFix Premium Steam Cleaner is the best cleaner that we’ve tested. With its near 2-litre capacity, 2kW+ heater and powerful VapoHydro mode, this is a steam cleaner that can handle everything.

Variable steam control power lets you control the SC5’s output, so you can tackle more delicate jobs. It’s the VapoHydro that really grabs attention: this mode mixes water with steam, giving a kind of pressure-washer action.

Karcher provides accessories for almost every job. There’s an Easyfix floor mopping head complete with washable microfibre cloths and a carpet glider. A large square brush gives you power for tough cleaning. And, a detail nozzle which takes a small round brush, small detail brush and power nozzle. In fact, the only thing missing is a window cleaning tool.

On all surfaces from hard floors and carpets, to tiles and window sills, the SC5 proved itself to be a powerful performer, shifting stubborn dirt. And, it can do it at speed; in fact, we’ve never seen a steam cleaner that can clean a hard floor so quickly.

For all-round cleaning ability, the Karcher SC5 easyFix Premium Steam Cleaner is the ultimate choice.

The best steam cleaner and vacuum cleaner is the Bissell Vac & Steam 1977E

Steam cleaner type: Steam mop and vacuum | Dimensions: 439 x 301 x 305mm | Accessories: Floor head (carpet and hard floors) | Water tank: 380ml

    The pros:

    • Vac cleans in front of steam mop
    • Fast heat-up time
    • Good run-time per tank
    • Decent-length cable (7.5m)

    The cons:

    • Limited suction power
    • Average steam power
    • No pivot on head

The Bissell Vac & Steam 1977E is a fantastic time-saver, vacuuming and cleaning at the same time. We loved the original, and now the 1977E model has had a small update and now comes in a fetching blue colour. As a standalone steam cleaner or a standalone vacuum cleaner, this model won’t win awards; yet, the combination of the two features produces some powerful cleaning results.

With a 400W bagless vacuum cleaner and 1100W steam heater, small particles are sucked up before the microfibre pad steams the floor and picks up stains. For well-trodden areas in your home with hard floors, the Bissell Vac & Steam 1977E can effectively halve your cleaning time. Bissell recommends three passes for a dirty area and that worked well, picking up dust and removing stains.

The downside of the system is that it’s not very flexible, and it’s neither a good vacuum or a flexible and powerful steam cleaner. Still, it’s the combination of parts that is important, and the Bissell Vac & Steam 1977E delivers on hard floor cleaning.

The best steam mop is the Shark Klik n’ Flip S6003UK Steam Mop

    Steam cleaner type: Steam mop | Dimensions: 1190 x 110 x 100mm | Accessories: Floor head | Water tank: 330ml

    The pros:

    • Powerful, fast steam cleaning
    • Double-sided pads
    • Effective steam blast
    • Good range of steam levels
    • Sturdy and well made

    The cons:

If you’re looking for a steam floor mop to quickly clean up hard floors, the Shark Klik n’ Flip S6003UK Steam Mop could well be the model for you. This well-priced steam mop is focussed on floor cleaning, shipping with a double-sided mopping pad that clips to the bottom of the mop. It’s a huge mop, making short work of floors, as you can clean large areas with a single swipe.

Cleverly, the Klik n’ Flip head can flip over partway through a clean, giving you the clean side of the pad to keep cleaning with, without introducing a lengthy changeover. Cleaning performance was excellent, with the Shark Klik n’ Flip S6003UK Steam Mop tidying up mud on a tiled floor with ease, and picking up everyday kitchen stains: the steam blast function is particularly useful for cleaning up tougher stains.

The best cylinder steam cleaner is the Polti Vaporetto Smart 100_B

    Polti Vaporetto Smart 100_B hero

Steam cleaner type: Cylinder | Dimensions: 290 x 270 x 400mm | Weight: 5kg | Accessories: Mop head with microfibre pad and carpet glider, squeegee tool with microfibre cover, two small round brushes, curved nozzle, scraper tool and two extension tubes | Water tank: 2-litres | Steam pressure: 4bar

    The pros:

    • Large water tank
    • Easy to fill
    • Heats up quickly
    • Powerful steaming
    • Versatile

    The cons:

    • Unclear steam dial
    • Bulky for small jobs
    • Noisy

If there’s one problem with cylinder steam cleaners, it’s that you have to wait for most of them to cool down before you refill and continue cleaning. Not so with the Polti Vaporetto Smart 100_B, which has a removable water tank, so you can fill it as many times as you need to complete your cleaning job, all without any cool-down time.

This makes this cylinder steam cleaner a great choice for large and difficult jobs; indeed, its bulk means that it’s not an ideal tool if you only want to tackle smaller jobs or just mop floors.

Although the controls are a little confusing on this model (the steam dial goes from min to max, but it’s not clear where about you are in the range), performance is mostly excellent. The Polti Vaporetto Smart 100_B coped well with our tough floor challenge, brought grout back to life and easily managed to clean up a hard floor.

There are tools to tackle most jobs, but only one mop pad in the box is a little disappointing. That said, for the price, this is an excellent choice and the continuous cleaning makes it brilliant for large jobs.

The best 2-in-1 steam cleaner is the Hoover Steam Capsule 2in1

    Hoover Steam Capsule 2in1 hero

Steam cleaner type: Steam mop and handheld | Dimensions: 1170 x 305 x 176mm | Weight: 3.5kg | Accessories: Mopping pad, carpet slider, triangular brush, large metal brush, small metal brush, round brush, curved nozzle, conical tool, hose, window squeegee, small cloth | Water tank: 0.35-litres | Steam pressure: Not disclosed

    The pros:

    • Easy to use
    • Versatile
    • Lots of accessories
    • Powerful cleaning

    The cons:

    • Fiddly to use the hose
    • Best for shorter cleaning jobs in handheld mode

If you want a steam cleaner that can do everything, the Hoover Steam Capsule 2in1 is a great choice. It looks and acts like a steam mop, and it is: you get two microfibre cloths, a lift-out brush, and there’s a carpet slider, so you can tackle everything from hard floors to carpets with ease. Cleaning performance was very good on hard floors and, use the cleaner on minimum steam, and your floors come out quite dry.

The trick with this cleaner is that you can lift-out the handheld section and use the selection of tools for detail cleaning, such as for grout, windows and ovens. You get a lot of steam pressure on maximum (although you get a lot of water run off), and can tackle most jobs. The minor issue is that the steam cleaner goes through cycles, so you get a burst of steam for a few minutes and then the system has to refresh.

It’s also a little fiddly to hold the handheld unit’s trigger in, so longer jobs can be fatiguing. However, as a maintenance cleaner, preventing the build of stains and mould, this steam cleaner excels. Overall, you can get cleaners for bigger jobs on this list, but if you’re after a well-priced mop that can turn its hand to smaller jobs, the Hoover Steam Capsule 2in1 is a great choice.

The best handheld steam cleaner is the Hoover Steam Express

Steam cleaner type: Handheld | Dimensions: 260 x 220 x 120mm, 1.6kg Accessories: Crevice, detail and scraper tools, 80cm hose, metal and round brushes, window/upholstery tool with textile pad | Water tank: 400ml

    The pros:

    • Powerful
    • Affordable
    • Great variety of tools

    The cons:

    • Steam volume hard to regulate
    • Cable could be longer

If you don’t have large areas to clean and just need a steam cleaner for close-up jobs, the small and well priced Hoover Steam Express could be for you. Little larger than a water sprayer, this handheld tool comes with all of the accessories to clean up smaller areas in your home. You even get an extension hose, which makes it a bit easier to get into gaps or reach up higher.

Testing around the home, with the accessories, we managed to clean up limescale around a tap, clean grease off of an oven rack, get marks off a chair and even clean a shower screen. There’s plenty of steam from this model: in fact, sometimes the shot of steam is a bit too powerful and objects can be left quite wet. When we cleaned our shower screen we had to be careful not to drip hot water onto ourselves.

With lots of accessories and its low price, the Hoover Steam Express is a great choice if you don’t need to tackle bigger jobs; if you do, then look elsewhere on this list for a cleaner that can also manage hard floors.

    Steam cleaner tips

Do you need a steam mop or a steam cleaner?

A steam mop is designed specifically for hard floors, with a microfibre cloth used to pick up dirt and steam pushed through the cloth to clean and remove dirty. A steam cleaner is different, as it has different attachments for different jobs: nozzles and brushes for detail cleaning, window cleaning accessories and more. The latter is better for tackling jobs around the house, but a steam mop is more convenient for everyday use. If you want a balance, you can get models that convert from a mop to a handheld unit for occasional detail jobs.

Should you use detergent with a steam cleaner?

Steam cleaners don’t have to use detergent, and use clean water and steam alone to remove stains. This makes them more gently cleaners in some regards, as you don’t have to use harsh chemicals to remove stubborn stains. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t use chemicals in the normal way. For example, for cleaning floors and surfaces, using traditional detergent and disinfectant makes sense, although you can then use a steam cleaner afterwards for dealing with some stains. Likewise, you should still clean with cleaning products for the deepest clean, letting the steam cleaner handle deeper jobs.

What size water tank do I need?

The larger the tank of water you have, the longer the steam cleaner can keep cleaning. This is more important on some models than others. Many models have a refillable water tank that you can remove and top up when you like. These ones heat water when its pumped from a tank, effectively giving you continuous cleaning. For these models, the size of the tank isn’t so important, as you can get water when you need it. If you have a cleaner with a built-in tank where all of the water is heated at the same time, you have to have a cool-down time (up to 20 minutes or so) before you can refill and use them again. For these models, it’s important to have a running time that will last for the length of job you have, so that you don’t have to pause in the middle of cleaning.

    What accessories do I need?

Steam cleaners, bar standalone steam mops, will come with a variety of attachments for different jobs. Largely, these are there to make specific tasks easier. Each accessory works by changing how steam is directed, such as a thin nozzle to help push steam towards tile grouting, or by providing a tool to help clean, such as a wire brush for cleaning an oven. Tools can do both, such as an upholstery brush that directs steam over a wider area and gives you a brush to agitate the upholstery and loosen dirt. When you buy a steam cleaner you should think about the jobs you want to do and make sure that your chosen model has the right accessories.

Can you use a steam cleaner on all surfaces?

Steam is generally safe to use on most surfaces but there are some exceptions to this. As you’re using water, using a steam cleaner on an unsealed surface isn’t recommended. And, surfaces that may react badly to a lot of water, such as solid wood flooring, may not be suitable, as you could get swelling.

The situation is worse if you apply steam directly to the surface but also applies with steam mops. Although mop heads will absorb most of the heat of the steam, they can still get very wet, which is no good for many surfaces. For dealing with hard floors, we recommend that you buy one of our best hard floor cleaners, instead.

Can a steam cleaner kill bed bugs?

Steam is an effective way to kill bed bugs and their eggs, thanks to the high temperatures proving lethal. If you’re worried about an infestation, then steam cleaning soft furnishings can help. Make sure that you use the upholstery attachment and/or mattress accessory to clean. You should move slowly over the area, taking at least 30 seconds before moving the steam head in order to deliver a killing dose of steam. Make sure that you cover all areas, and press the steam head into crevices and around the bed; for mattresses, cover the sides and underneath, too.

Can a steam cleaner kill coronavirus?

Karcher commissioned research that showed that enveloped viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2, can be killed by high temperatures. Spot cleaning for 30 seconds at maximum steam level was enough to kill the virus. This shows that cleaning close-up is required to be effective, so cleaning with a burst of steam can be a good secondary way of disinfecting surfaces, although cleaning with detergent should always be done. Steam can be good on surfaces that are otherwise hard to clean, such as curtains and upholstery.

Using a steam mop is slightly different, as the microfibre cloth absorbs some heat. Steam mops will remove dirt, bacteria and viruses, but the pad should be cleaned at a high temperature in a washing machine to disinfect it after use. In short, then, a steam cleaner can help disinfect surfaces but should be used as an additional tool after traditional cleaning.

11 Top-Rated Steam Mops That Will Cut Your Cleaning Time in Half

If you want to minimize the time and effort it takes to complete one of the most dreaded chores known to man—yes, mopping—then you should consider adding a steam mop to your collection of cleaning supplies, pronto. We're not exaggerating about the "most dreaded chore" part; a 2018 survey reported that 20 percent of Americans have listed mopping as the bane of their household jobs list.

There's certainly a lot to miss from the days of yore, but having to get on your hands and knees to scrub the floors definitely isn't one of them. Thankfully, modern technology advancements in home appliances have made the cleaning game easier. Although you might not be jumping for joy at the thought of cleaning your floors, a good steam mop is guaranteed to change the way you view this task forever.

    Benefits of a Steam Mop

With all the benefits a steam mop can provide, chances are, you'll never want to go back to a regular old mop and bucket after you give it a try. Once you fill a regular bucket with hot water, it immediately starts getting cold and losing its disinfecting and sanitizing properties—not to mention, it often gets dirty after the first mop rinse. A steam mop, on the other hand, retains its heat, so it always stays at the optimal temperature to disinfect floors. Thanks to this, you'll never have to use harsh chemicals with overpowering scents—which aren't ideal for use around kids, pets, or anyone with allergies—to make sure your floors are as clean as possible.

Another plus is that the high temperatures a steam mop reaches lift tough stains without requiring extra scrubbing, providing a deep clean for even the yuckiest of bathroom floors. It also gets them spick and span in a fraction of the time because it eliminates the need to stop, re-soak, strain, scrub, and repeat. With a trusty steam mop in hand, you just pass over the whole floor once, and voilà.

And since floors dry pretty much instantaneously with a steam mop, you won't have to wait eons before you can walk on the freshly cleaned floor. You'll never need to empty out grimy mop water, either, which equals less contact with dirt all around!

How to Use a Steam Mop

Although the instructions may vary slightly from model to model, using a steam mop is super easy. Just fill up the steam tank with water, replace the mop cloth—available in disposable, or the more eco- and pocket-friendly reusable wipes—plug it in, and you're good to go. Scrubbing is limited to extremely stubborn, stuck-on stains, but if anything can get rid of those, it's a good steam mop.

Now that you know why a steam mop tops a regular mop in more ways than one, we found 11 of the best—from trusted brands like Bissell, Shark, and O-Cedar—that'll make cleaning your home a breeze.
