The buyer of the model complained of loud noise from the back brakes and squealing issues. The noise occurred around 12,700 miles. The problems seemed to be consistent in almost all compass model years.
Engine issues are very critical to handle as it’s expensive to make repairs. The 2014 model got some engine issues like rattling, jerking, and power loss. The rattling problem occurred to 12,00 miles Jeep Compass and was very frequent. The case was an inconvenience to people’s daily lives.
Engine jerking was common too to this model, at newer vehicles around 1000 miles. The engine would jerk and stop suddenly. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a remedy solution for the issue.
For power loss, it occurred once in 60,000 miles model. Though not a common issue, there should be measures to address it. The challenge can cause crashes if a vehicle loses power on highways or traffic.
Different electrical problems were reported as follows;
- Electronic throttle- affects vehicle acceleration and prevents air cooling. It occurred in 86,000 miles, and the solution was to replace the electronic throttle.
- Esc light illuminates randomly at 50,000 miles, Jeeps. The issue can be corrected by replacing the clock spring or updating software.
- Integrated module failure- reported at 28,000 miles, and it was costly to repair.
Light problems were reported a couple of times for this model.
- Headlights have been dim- this was a challenge, especially in bad weather and at night. Owners installed better lights.
- Plate lights failed- some owners found themselves hitting trucks with the fist.
- Lights were failing to come on automatically, especially in bad weather with limited visibility.
The complaints were just a few.
- One-touch power failure at 16,000 miles vehicles- the windows fail to go up automatically.
- Windows were breaking easily, an issue related to glass quality.
There were mileage issues reported by newer vehicles around 50 miles. The problem occurred because the cars wouldn’t get the promised miles per gallon as per the company.
AC and Heating Issues
Air problems occurred in around 77,000 miles of vehicles, though not often. There was only one complaint of the issue, where the AC could blow warm air without any reason.
Like the engine issues, transmission issues are also significant and require a professional technician for repair. However, there was only one issue raised in 26,000 miles vehicle, where the transmission was overheating.

- The jeep stalls and shuts down while one is driving. There are several complaints about the engine dying without any warnings. The dealers think the problem could be with a voltage regulator, and they can repair it for free.
- There is also a case with the transmission for 6-speed and 9-speed. The units have problems like jerking and falling into limp mode. An owner complains of the vehicle going into limp mode after 15 minutes of drive and won’t drive over 30 mph. Unfortunately, the dealers have no solution for the issue, and it keeps occurring.

2015 Jeep compass has one recall for steering. The power steering hose retention was clamp installed at incorrect location causing detachment of low-pressure return hose. The issue would result in leaking fluid that could cause an increased risk of a fire. To confirm if your vehicle falls under this recall, contact the NHTSA hotline. The cars affected are 60140.
2016 Jeep Compass had a recall of the engine and engine cooling. The machine had an issue of stalling as the crankshaft failed to work intermittently. The recall affected 42231 vehicles manufactured between May 2016 and July 2016. If the engine stalls, there is an increased risk of a crash. The dealers will replace the crankshaft for the vehicle’s owners free of charge.
2017 Jeep Compass has been issued four recalls from NHTSA
- Safety recall for fire extinguishers with plastic handle or push button. The extinguishers get clogged and preventing the equipment from discharging the required force to activation. In addition, the nozzle could still detach from the valve assembly with much energy and cause injury and make the equipment unfunctional. The number of vehicles affected is 61791; you should contact Kidde to replace your fire extinguisher for free.
- A second recall is on the instrument panel, where the backlighting brightness cannot be adjusted. The vehicles thus fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard. Too bright light reduces the driver’s ability to see at night and increases the crash risk. Check if your vehicle is among the 25823 affected by contacting the dealer’s customer service, the Chrysler.
- Another recall is on vehicles whose users guide contain wrong information on jumpstarting procedure. The polarity of the battery terminals is in reverse in the battery terminal graphic. The owners can hook up the battery cables incorrectly, and this may cause injuries. Check if your vehicle is among the 12989 affected and have the guide changes free of charge.
- Last recall for jeep 2017 compass affected 6-speed transmission vehicles. The left front of the half shaft may be incorrectly seated and disengage from the transmission. With breaks in transmission, the car can result in loss of drive and cause crash. The dealers will inspect the half shaft and replace any that are improperly engaged. The number of units affected is 4705.

2018 Jeep Compass recall
- Incorrect coating of the brake pistons affected the functioning of the brakes on the rear axle wheels. However, the coating can still result in the formation of gas in the hydraulic system. As a result, the power performance of the braking can lead to a crash. Contact the dealers to check if your vehicle is affected.
- A recall for vehicles whose power train control module causes stalling or a no-start condition increases the crash risk. Owners should call Chrysler’s customer service for enquiries on the recall.
- A vehicle with front lower control arms incorrectly welded, resulting in separation. The problem can cause a car to lose control and increase the risk of a crash. The dealers will inspect the front lower control arms and replace them free of charge.
- Vehicles have the airbag in the passenger’s side having loose inflator mounting nuts. In case of a crash, the airbag may strike the vehicle’s occupants and result in injury or death. The dealers will inform the owners and replace the passenger airbag module free of charge.
- Recall on vehicles whose instrumental panel cluster backlighting brightness cannot be adjusted. As a result, a bright instrumental cluster affects the driver’s visibility at night and increases the chances of a crash.
- Recall of vehicles with 2.4 L engines as some have cracked oil pump housing makes the engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash. The dealers will notify the owners, inspect the oil pump and replace it as necessary.
Jeep Compass Reliability and Common Problems
The Jeep Compass is a fairly reliable compact SUV that’s well-loved for its spacious interiors and towing capacity. According to CarEdge.com, this model has an average depreciation rate of 47% after five years. The five-year resale value of a Jeep Compass is around $13,000, assuming an initial selling price of $25,000 for a brand new unit.
Is the Jeep Compass Reliable?
There are a lot of mixed reviews regarding the reliability of the Jeep Compass. RepairPal.com gave this compact SUV an above-average reliability rating of 4 out of 5, ranking it 11th out of 26 models in this segment. Meanwhile, according to the J.D. Power and Associates website, the Jeep Compass had fairly average reliability scores, ranging from 75 to 78 out of 100.
Maintaining a Jeep Compass is fairly easy on the wallet. RepairPal.com estimates that the average annual cost of repairs for this SUV is around $526, which is pretty average, considering that the average annual maintenance cost for other compact SUVs is $521. You can also expect to bring your Jeep Compass to a shop for unscheduled repairs an average of 0.2 times per year, with the probability of the repair being severe at 11%.
The Jeep Compass has only been around since 2006, so most estimates regarding its longevity might not be as accurate. But given that many Jeeps can last more than 10 years and 200,000 miles, you can expect that with regular maintenance, the Jeep Compass can last you for a long time.
Top Jeep Compass Problems
As with most vehicles, the Jeep Compass has its fair share of problems and issues that many owners find annoying or downright dangerous. Below are some of the most common Jeep Compass problems:
Vehicle Refuses to Start
A somewhat common 2018 Jeep Compass problem is a no-start condition. According to the affected owners, they first noticed the issue when the vehicle was still relatively new, at approximately 25,000 miles. One owner said that even if they had their vehicle checked at a mechanic, their vehicle still failed to start. They were told that something may be wrong with the vehicle’s battery.
So far, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA US LLC) has released three technical service bulletins (TSBs) regarding the no-start condition in some 2018 Jeep Compasses. The first bulletin, TSB #S1908000108, outlines the repair and diagnostic information for no-start conditions that are accompanied by multiple U-codes (i.e. U11B9-00, U0100-00, U0001-00, U0401-00, and U0422-00). The latest version of this bulletin was issued on November 10, 2020.
The second bulletin is TSB #09-004-20, which was released on March 5, 2020. This bulletin contains revisions from an earlier document released back in March 2018. According to this document, some 2018 Jeep Compasses that have a no-start condition in freezing temperatures may have a muffler that lacks a weep hole. The third bulletin, TSB #S2008000075, was released on June 25, 2020. According to this TSB, a no-start condition accompanied by cluster messages to service the shifter or service the start/stop system may be caused by a faulty connection to the auxiliary battery and other related components.
When driving through inclement weather, everyone should feel secure inside their own vehicle knowing that the snow or rain won’t get inside the passenger cabin. Unfortunately, it’s a different story for some owners of the Jeep Compass. One of the major 2014 Jeep Compass problems is a leaking roof or sunroof. According to some of the affected owners, whenever they’d drive through bad weather, rain or snow would always get inside their passenger cabin. According to one of the owners, the leak is visible through the vehicle’s dome light, while others say there are no visible leaks.
FCA released a TSB (#23-035-15) in September 2015 to address the roof leak issue. According to this bulletin, aside from the Jeep Compass, this issue was also present in some Jeep Patriot, Dodge Journey, and Dodge Caliber units. The document outlines the repair procedure, which involves replacing the sunroof service trough.
There are quite a few complaints from owners of 2012 and 2014 Jeep Compasses about noisy/grinding brakes. According to the affected owners, the noise would be low in pitch, but it was definitely noticeable and irritating from the get-go. For the 2012 year models, this issue would be evident at around 8,950 miles. Meanwhile, 2014 year model owners would notice this issue at 12,700 miles on average.
Some owners have brought their vehicles to the shop only to be told by mechanics that this is a normal defect of Jeep Compasses and that nothing can be done to remove the noise. While some owners have resorted to replacing the brakes and other related components, the noise still persisted in most cases.
On August 20, 2016, FCA released a TSB to address this specific issue. TSB #05-003-16 suggests that affected owners install an anti-vibration bracket to the rear brake caliper to get rid of the low, grinding noise they heard when braking.
CVT Transmission Overheating
An overheating CVT transmission is perhaps the worst Jeep Compass problem on this list. It affected 2011 year models. Not only is it very expensive to repair, it’s also a significant safety hazard. Owners who experienced this issue have reported that the CVT transmission on their Jeep Compass would overheat whenever the outside temperature is high or when they’re driving at high speeds on the interstate. Their vehicles would suddenly produce unusual whining noises and lose the ability to maintain their speed. This would happen to the affected vehicles more than once.
This issue is quite dangerous, especially when driving on the freeway, where passenger vehicles typically run at 65-75 mph. Suddenly losing speed in these situations can cause major accidents and personal injury.
Affected owners had to pay $1,700 on average to have the issue diagnosed and fixed. Unfortunately, in many cases, even mechanics didn’t know how to address the issue. There are currently no TSBs or recalls to address this specific issue. On a related note, Jeep has released TSBs #9004265 and #9004266 to address another transmission/powertrain-related problem.
Tie Rod and Control Arm/Bushing Failure
The suspension system helps keep your ride comfortable and allows for better steering and handling. The Jeep Compass has a couple of issues with the suspension system, specifically tie rod and control arm/bushing failure. One of the most common problems with the 2008 Jeep Compass is tie rod failure. Owners have reported hearing unusual sounds while driving. Upon checking, their tires had worn in an odd way. Aside from replacing the tie rod ends and control arms with new ones, mechanics also recommended getting the wheels realigned, which cost the affected owners an average of $480 to fix.
According to CarComplaints.com, the most common 2007 Jeep Compass problem is control arm/bushing failure, with 17 reports on the site. Affected owners have observed the issue at around 58,000 miles. It cost them an average of $690 to repair. One Compass owner said that the first symptom they noticed was an unusual noise produced by the vehicle as they were turning a corner. The vehicle then skewed to the passenger side as they were turning, causing the vehicle to hit the sidewalk.
In most cases, replacing the ball joints, tie rod ends, control arms, and control arm bushings fixed these suspension system-related issues. But as of writing, Jeep/FCA has not released a TSB or recall about these issues.
The TIPM or the Totally Integrated Power Module is an electronic device used to manage the distribution of power throughout the entire vehicle. If this part goes haywire, then the entire vehicle may seem like it’s possessed. Many Jeep Compass owners found out about the symptoms of a bad TIPM the hard way. A malfunctioning TIPM is one of the most expensive 2007 Jeep Compass problems. Many owners have reported their vehicle lights (headlights, dashboard lights, etc.) going on and off. Some have even reported that their vehicle just honked on its own, even if it was parked.
According to the affected Compass owners, they started seeing the symptoms at 110,000 miles. Most of the owners said that replacing the TIPM fixed the problem, but this came with a hefty price tag. On average, this issue cost the affected owners $1,650 to repair. There are currently no TSBs or recalls to address this issue.
You should be alright as long as you’re aware of potential problems with the particular Jeep Compass year model you’re planning on buying. It pays to avoid year models with significant issues that are expensive to fix. Taking time to research before buying a used Compass can help save you both time and money in the long run. Just make sure that the seller has cleared everything up before you push through with your purchase.

Jeep introduced the Compass to its line of back in the year 2007. It's a crossover SUV and the second generation of the vehicle came out in 2017. The Compass is available in several different trim levels which include:

The MSRP on a Compass will range from about $22,000 all the way up to $31,000 depending on the trim level. Obviously if the Compass has been around since 2007 it is a fairly popular vehicle. In 2019, Jeep sold nearly 145,000 Compasses in the United States.
Despite the popularity of the Jeep Compass, it is not without its problems. As with any vehicle model, there have been issues that have turned up over the years. Particularly in the older models of the Jeep Compass, many drivers have had issues that have caused them to head to the mechanic with some steep repair bills.
The second generation of the Jeep Compass seems to be faring better than the first-generation dead in terms of problems. That's not to say that it's completely devoid of issues now, and in fact the 2018 model did have a fair degree of problems and recalls that have affected the overall performance of the vehicle. Because of the issues that have popped up over the years, the Jeep Compass does have a reputation as being a sometimes unreliable vehicle. That's something to consider if you're in the market for buying a new Jeep Compass, and especially if you're looking for an older model.
While any vehicle could potentially suffer problems, there are some that have definitely popped up more often than others over the years with a Jeep Compass. Let's go through a breakdown of some of the most significant problems.
2007 was definitely the worst year for complaints related to the Jeep Compass. In particular, the control arm bushings were known to fail quite often. This could cause the suspension to go completely, and more than one driver reported that while they were driving, they heard noises as the bushings failed in the car began to drift off in one direction or another. Clearly this is a potentially dangerous situation and one that is best avoided.
The average cost for repairing the suspension issues in your Jeep Compass would be around $700. Control arms, tie rods, and bushings were all common complaints. Some owners reported having to replace bushings twice before they even reached 60,000 miles.
The Jeep Compass uses a CVT or continuous variable transmission. Some owners reported issues with this system badly overheating. This was especially prominent in the 2011 model year. Word is that the system would start to feel most often around the 70,000 miles, and repair bills would be upwards of $1,500 to $2,000.This problem was especially dangerous as, if the CVT overheated while you're on the road, your ability to accelerate could fail and leave you unable to adequately navigate through traffic.
The instrument cluster on the Jeep Compass has been accused of being overly bright more than once. Drivers have had problems at night seeing the road as clearly as they would like to because the instrument cluster is shining in their eyes. There is no option for dimming it, which could potentially leave it to our dangerous situation.
Owners of the 2018 Jeep Compass have had the same problem with the rear camera interface. Off in the resolution is so right, you can't see what's behind you if you're trying to backup using the camera to assist.
In early models there were frequent problems with the TIPM or totally integrated power module failing. This was a massive problem in the 2007 model year and continued for many model years after that. It was the chief concern of the 2011 model year in 2012 as well.
The TIPM was an electrical control system in Chrysler vehicles. It was meant to operate something like an electrical brain that would coordinate all your electrical system and send the necessary signals to the necessary components so that your vehicle could operate properly. Unfortunately, the TIPM was known to be massively dysfunctional not just in Jeep but in many other vehicles as well.
Owners reported all kinds of problems with the TIPM malfunctioning in unpredictable ways. You might wake up in the morning and discover that your windows have rolled down and the radio is blasting at full volume. These are the kind of problems that a faulty TIPM could have caused in a vehicle. There were serious side effects of the dysfunction of the TIPM as well. Some drivers reported problems like:
- Stalled engines in the middle of driving
- Fuel pumps that won't shut off
- Airbags that won't deploy
- Airbags deploy for no reason
- Power windows that no longer function
- Doors that lock and unlock for no reason
- Starter cranks but then won't start
Where it is that the average tipm repair was about $1,200. That's a steep repair bill for a piece of technology that was faulty from the beginning. There was a settlement and recalls issued for some models with faulty TIPMs in them, but the Jeep Compass was not one of those affected models. That doesn't change the fact that many drivers did have problems with theirs.
Wireless Control Module
From 2007 until about 2011 there was a serious issue with the wireless control module reported by a number of Jeep Compass owners. In this case, the vehicle had no crank and was unable to start because of a fault in a wireless control module.
The remote keyless entry system ceased to work properly and WCM needed to be replaced. Other electrical systems in the car would work properly, but this one it was rendered useless until such time as the unit was replaced.
Issues with the engine not properly starting have also plagued the Jeep Compass. This is related to an electronic lock up in the starting system. When it starts to break down, your keyless entry no longer functions and then you are unable to start the Jeep at all. This was a recurrent problem across numerous model years. In fact, the entire first generation from 2007 to 2017 had drivers reporting this as an issue.
The Compass shutting down while you're driving has also been an issue that some drivers had experienced. This was one of the most prevalent complaints with the 2018 model.
From 2007 through 2014 a number of Jeep Compass owners reported problems with the sunroof and windows leaking. This could occur in either the front or the rear of the vehicle and required a thorough inspection of the seals and grommets to discover the source of the leak. The average repair cost for this was around $100. Overall, this was one of the cheaper problems that Afflicted the Jeep Compass over the years, but it was still annoying for a number of drivers.
There have been a number of recalls for the Jeep Compass over the years for a variety of reasons. In addition to the ones listed here there were several that affected smaller numbers of vehicles, sometimes as few as just several dozen and up to several thousand.
- Insufficient Coating on Rear Brake Caliper Pistons: Jeep Compasses from 2018 and 2019 were recalled for this reason In August of 2018. The recall affected over 154,000 vehicles. The lack of proper coating on the brake calipers could lead to the formation of gas pockets, and that was reducing the ability of the brakes to function properly.
- Passenger Airbags: 27,000 2018 Jeep Compass models for recalls due to an issue with the Airbag in which loose nuts in the inflator mounting could become projectiles if the airbag deploys. there is a potential risk of a fatality if this went off at the wrong time.
- ABS Failure: 50,000 2007 Jeep Compass models were recalled due to a problem with the ABS module that could result in a loss of vehicle control.
- Airbags and Seatbelts Disabled: 2010 had a massive recall for issues with seatbelt pretensioners and side airbags being disabled and not working properly when needed. Over 1.4 million Vehicles were recalled for these problems. This continues on as a problem through the 2014 model year.
- Delayed Airbag: In 2010 there was also an issue that could arise if the Jeep were to roll over. The software error that occurred in this dangerous situation would delay the deployment of airbags in this case. Over 250,000 vehicles were recalled for this reason.
- Power Steering Hose Clamps: There was a recall in the 2015 model year for 60,000 affected vehicles. One of the power steering hose clamps could come loose and leak fluid which would increase the risk for a fire in the vehicle.
- Crankshaft Sensor Fail: Over 40,000 Jeep Compasses were recalled in the 2016 model year due to a problem with the crankshaft sensor that could fail and lead to the engine stalling.
- Fire Extinguisher: In 2017 there was an issue with the fire extinguisher in the Jeep Compass potentially being clogged and therefore inoperable. There is also the potential for the nozzle to actually dislodge while you were trying to operate the fire extinguisher which, in addition to rendering it inoperable, could cause injury as it became a projectile. Just under 62,000 vehicles were recalled to address this issue.
- Instrument Brightness: In 2017 there was also a recall for over 25,000 vehicles due to the fact that the instrument panel brightness was not adjustable. This was especially a problem at night, when the glare from the display panel reduces the ability to see the road and increased crash risks.
- Malfunctioning Windshield Wipers: Over 425,000 vehicles are recalled in 2019 due to an issue with the windshield wipers not operating properly. The arms could become loose and therefore not function the way they're supposed to. This could reduce visibility and increase crash risk overall. This recall extends into the 2020 model year as well.
