Merrick Cat Food Review: Purrfect Bistro

Purrfect Bistro is 100% grain-free and claims to be highly-digestible. It has Omega-3 and 6 for healthy skin and fur. Its main ingredients are real chicken (deboned chicken) plus sweet potato. It has fiber for hairball control; Omega fatty acids for skin and fur health; and is enriched with vitamins, minerals, probiotics, and antioxidants.

Pros

  • Seniors love it! Most buyers find that their picky senior cats absolutely love the Merrick Purrfect Bistro Grain-Free Indoor Senior cat food. Their feline companions just can’t get enough of it. One customer has stated that her kitties who have previously been suffering from loss of appetite, ate like their lives depended on it.
  • Just the right size. The kibble size of the Merrick Purrfect Bistro Grain-Free Indoor Senior is small, which makes it easier for older kitties to chew, and thus, also easier for them to digest. It is especially perfect for senior felines who have less teeth than they used to have.
  • Helped resolve some digestive issues. Several pet parents have said that this food stopped, or at least significantly reduced the frequency of their senior pets’ vomiting. An owner of a 17-year old kitty said that the fiber content of the Merrick Purrfect Bistro Grain-Free Indoor Senior helped eliminate hard stools for his furry buddy. A handful of owners, noticed that the litter box odor was also reduced, as well as the amount of solid waste.
  • Helps maintain a healthy weight. While it may be tasty and seem to motivate older mousers to eat, the Merrick Purrfect Bistro Grain-free Indoor Senior is said to have helped pets maintain a healthy weight. This is especially beneficial to senior pets who have started gaining more weight due to lessened activity.

Cons

  • A bit too crumbly. A few customers have found this cat food to have more food dust than other brands of pet foods. The small, crumbly kibble tend to leave food dust on the cat’s dish. The food dust adds to the weight of the bag, but is not actually consumed by their pets.

Conclusion

The Purrfect Bistro Grain-free Indoor Senior seems to be a great choice for a lot of senior cats. The flavor motivates them to eat and have a healthy appetite, which is very important in older cats. This cat food also seems to have improved or even resolved some existing digestive issues that a few cats had.  The perfect kibble size makes it easier for older ones to chew.

2. Merrick Purrfect Bistro Minced Thanksgiving Day Dinner

This grain free canned cat food has minced real deboned turkey in tasty gravy. The rest of the first five ingredients are real chicken (deboned chicken), chicken liver, turkey broth, and deboned duck. Truly a Thanksgiving feast for your fur baby! They especially appreciate the fact that its ingredients do not include fillers such as corn or food by-products. Most customers who buy this cat food are more than willing to pay a bit more for cat food with high nutritional value.
  • The gravy.  Kitties seem to enjoy licking the tasty liquid that comes with this canned food.  This wet food contains turkey broth, which makes for an excellent-tasting Thanksgiving gravy. One pet parent finds that even with the sauce, the food content of the can is well-packed and seem to have more solid food in it instead of just having a lot of liquid.
  • Great flavor. This Thanksgiving feast in a can sure is popular among kitties. A majority of customers rave that their pets absolutely love the Merrick Purrfect Bistro Grain-Free Minced Thanksgiving Day Dinner. They just cannot get enough. One customer said that it is the only canned cat food that her four furry buddies would eat.

Cons

  • Recipe changes. Some customers have complained that the ingredients of this variant have changed. It previously did not contain deboned chicken. Others have noted that the addition of duck and chicken increases the cat food’s fat content. A few kitties who previously ate the old formula did not care for the new one.

Conclusion

The Merrick Purrfect Bistro Grain-Free Minced Thanksgiving Day Dinner is definitely a feast for felines who enjoy its flavor. The gravy seems to be worth licking their dishes clean for.

This is a bonus as some pet parents feel that cats do not get enough hydration. More importantly, this tasty cat food has ingredients with very high nutritional value, such as turkey, chicken liver, and organic alfalfa among others.

Let’s move on to Merrick Backcountry, Merrick’s ancestral-diet line for the wild cat in your kitty.

Pros

  • The raw bits are a hit!The freeze dried raw bits are quite popular among cats who like this variant.  Some pet parents even give the raw tidbits as treats. Some pick the raw bits out and eat them first before digging into the kibble.  Even a few ferret owners are raving.
  • Converted wet food only fans. A lot of owners whose cats previously consumed wet food exclusively were said to have liked the Merrick Backcountry – Raw Infused – Game Bird Recipe.  According to them, this is the only dry food that their cats like. This makes it a good choice to try on cats that owners wish to convince that there is more to kibble than they thought.
  • Rich in protein.Merrick Backcountry – Raw Infused – Game Bird Recipe has a higher protein content than your average dry cat nourishment. The dry cat kibble is protein-packed with deboned meat. It has actual freeze-dried raw pieces of pure meat.  It does not contain fillers such as grains and by-products.

Cons

  • Raw bits are too big for some. Some kittens and cats find the freeze-dried raw bits to be a bit too large for their liking.  While the kibble bits are small and perfect for little kitties, some are not able to reap the benefits of having the freeze-dried meat mixed with their dry food.

4. Merrick Backcountry Kitten Recipe Cuts

This protein-rich wet cat food is cut into morsels and comes in a single-serve pouch full of gravy.  The Merrick Backcountry Grain-Free Kitten Recipe Cuts contains real chicken (deboned chicken), duck broth, deboned duck, chicken broth, and chicken liver.

  • Good sized morsels. This wet kitten food comes in small chunks instead of the usual pate for kittens. They’re small enough for kittens to eat, but large enough to get them chewing, especially when teething.
  • Flavor. The deboned chicken plus duck soaked in tasty gravy proved to be popular among young kitties who have tried the Merrick Backcountry Grain-Free Kitten Recipe Cuts.  One pet parent said that her kittens try to finish their servings first, and then steal morsels from their siblings.

Cons

  • Slightly pricey. A handful of customers find this wet kitten food somewhat expensive compared to other foods.

Conclusion

The high protein content of this wet kitten food is perfect for growing kittens.  It is vital that they are able to build strong muscle tissues.

A lot of kittens seem to love it, and as a result have developed good appetites.  While it is on the pricey side, many pet parents believe the quality ingredients are worth the price.

Conclusion

FAQs

Is Merrick a good brand for cat foods?

Yes! When rated for quality of ingredients, customer experience, and product variety, the Merrick brand has mostly positive ratings.

Where are the kitty foods by the Merrick brand made?

They're all made right here in the United States. In Hereford, Texas to be specific.

How much should I feed my feline buddy?

The amount of foods your kitty consumes depends on his life stage (whether he's a kitten, and adult, or a senior), how active he is, and what his ideal weight should be.

Which is better — wet or dry foods?

Each of these has their own advantages and disadvantages. For example, wet foods have higher moisture content and are less processed. However, wet foods have shorter shelf lives.

Dry foods, meanwhile, contain higher calories, carbs, and proteins. But, your feline companions will need to drink lots of water to compensate for the lower moisture content.

The best answer is to give your pets a healthy balance of wet and dry foods for variety. You can also offer one of these as a treat.

Merrick Cat Food Review

Updated: October 13, 2020 by Kristen Chapple

I am a firm believer in the adage that you are what you eat, and just as I am very careful about what I put in my own body, I am also very careful about what I feed my cat. This often involves finding brands that share my philosophy of high-protein, grain-free, species appropriate foods, and that I can trust to deliver foods that match their marketing hype.

One brand that recently caught my attention is Merrick, which has been making dog food for over 30 years and started making cat food as well in 2013. Joining in the game so late, they have been able to incorporate a lot of industry learning about cat food into their lines, and the result is a strong, natural brand.

Read on to discover more about Merrick and for my top five Merrick cat foods.

1. Merrick Backcountry Grain-Free Morsels in Gravy Real Rabbit Recipe Cuts Cat Food Pouches

While this wet food from Merrick is actually their lowest in protein, it is their best quality wet food, and therefore unsurprisingly their most expensive.

The recipe is based on fresh muscle meat and organ meat – organs, especially liver, provide cats with much-needed nutrients. There is no meal or animal by-products in this recipe, or indeed any of Merrick’s wet food recipes. It achieves its high protein level by mixing a variety of different meat protein sources, just as you would expect from a premium wet food.

This is fine for the majority of cats, but some cats find it difficult to digest these kinds of mixed meat meals. It would be good if this was made clearer on the packaging so that pet parents could make more informed choices.

Pros

  • High in protein
  • Combines muscle meat with organs for the best nutrition
  • Enriched with salmon oil to provide essential fats
  • Grain-free
  • Enriched with essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and probiotics
  • Free from artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives
  • Variety of flavors available

Cons

  • Contains a mix of meats not listed in the recipe name
  • Price

Nutritional Profile

  • Crude protein 9% minimum
  • Crude fat 3% minimum
  • Crude fiber 1.2% maximum
  • Moisture 81% maximum

The recipe is grain-free, and grains have not just been replaced with other unneeded carbohydrates, which is great. It is also free from all artificial additives and enriched with all the nutrients and probiotics that we have come to expect from premium cat foods.

Finally, it also comes in a pretty extensive range of flavors. This is great when you find a cat food that you like as it is not generally good for your cat to eat the same foods every day, as it is the foods that they eat most often that they are likely to develop sensitivities or allergies.

Overall: Quality Mixed Protein

2. Merrick Purrfect Bistro Grain-Free Chicken Pate Canned Cat Food

This more affordable Purrfect Bistro wet food recipe from Merrick is also high in fiber, mixing muscle and organ meat, but from a limited range of sources that are clearly shown on the packaging. It is also grain-free, packed with nutrients and probiotics, free from all the bad artificial stuff, and comes in a wide variety of flavors.

The red flag with this dish for me, and why it did not make it to number one on my list, is that it is thickened with guar gum and carrageenan. Carrageenan is a controversial ingredient as it may contribute to inflammation and is a potential carcinogen. But it is up to each pet parent to decide how they feel about this ingredient.

Cons

  • Thickened with Carrageenan

3. Merrick Backcountry Grain-Free Chicken Pate Canned Cat Food

A third good wet food from Merrick is their pate Backcountry line. It is higher in protein than the first two wet cat foods on this list, it doesn’t mix its meat sources, and it is free from potentially carcinogenic ingredients.

Nevertheless, this recipe is lower down on my list because, as well as being high in animal-based protein, it is also relatively high in plant-based protein obtained from peas and potatoes. This artificially raises the protein level of the dish, as this protein offers little nutritional value to cats.

Unlike humans and dogs, that can produce the essential amino acids that we need from animal or plant protein, cats can only produce many of the essential compounds that they need from animal-based protein. Consequently, this plant protein is just empty filler.

Pros

  • High in protein
  • Enriched with salmon oil to provide essential fats
  • Grain-free
  • Enriched with essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and probiotics
  • Free from artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives
  • Variety of flavors available

Cons

  • Contains pea and potato protein
  • Price

  • Crude protein 11% minimum

4. Merrick Backcountry Raw Infused Game Bird Recipe with Chicken, Duck and Quail Grain-Free Dry Cat Food

Moving onto dry foods, I actually really like the Merrick Backcountry raw infused dry food. It starts with a good quality dry cat food that is high in protein and made from a mix of deboned chicken with chicken, turkey, and salmon meal, as is common for dry cat foods. This kibble is free from anything artificial and is infused with all those good nutrients that we have come to expect.

What sets this food apart is that it also contains freeze-dried chunks of raw chicken, duck, and quail. Raw food is great for your cat as it is what they have evolved to eat naturally, and it has much more of the essential nutrients that they need, as many of these are lost in the cooking process.

Freeze-drying the meat retains these nutrients but gives it a longer shelf life. I would love to be able to just feed my cat raw food, but it would be both expensive and challenging (it is not as simple as cutting up raw chunks of meat for them), and this offers an easy and convenient way to introduce some raw meat into their diet.

Pros

  • High in protein
  • Enriched with chicken fat to provide essential fats
  • Grain-free
  • Enriched with essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and probiotics
  • Free from artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives
  • Variety of flavors available

Cons

  • Contains pea and potato protein
  • Price
  • Limited flavors available

Nutritional Profile

  • Crude protein 42% minimum
  • Crude fat 14% minimum
  • Crude fiber 4% maximum
  • Moisture 11% maximum

Overall: Raw Meat Nutrition

5. Merrick Purrfect Bistro Grain-Free Real Chicken and Sweet Potato Recipe Adult Dry Cat Food

Finally, Merrick’s Purrfect Bistro dry cat food is a good quality dry cat food if you are looking for the basics. It is high in protein, grain-free, free of artificial additives, and enriched with essential nutrients.

The recipe does contain potato protein and dried whey protein concentrate, but it is difficult to find dry cat foods that do not contain these types of filler ingredients, which are needed to give kibble its texture and preservation.

Pros

  • High in protein
  • Enriched with chicken fat to provide essential fats
  • Grain-free
  • Enriched with essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and probiotics
  • Free from artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives
  • Variety of flavors available

Cons

  • Contains potato protein and dried whey protein concentrate

Nutritional Profile

  • Crude protein 40% minimum
  • Crude fat 14% minimum
  • Crude fiber 7.5% maximum
  • Moisture 11% maximum

About Merrick

The Merrick pet food brand dates back to 1988 when the Merrick family started making dog treats on their Texas ranch. Due to the popularity of their treats, they slowly started expanding their brand, finally branching out to cat food in 2013. While Merrick continues to operate as an independent business, it has been owned by Nestle Purina since 2015, and is therefore a sister brand of Friskies and other Purina pet food brands.

Merrick aims to make all-natural food for animals based on five promises about its ingredients and manufacturing process. These promises are:

  1. To partner with local growers to support local communities and ensure the freshness of ingredients. This means that all ingredients are sourced from the United States.
  2. To use nutritious, whole foods and never use any artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives.
  3. To provide a diet natural for animals that contains between 30 to 80 percent protein (depending on the type of food) sourced from meat, poultry, and fish.
  4. To offer something that they characterize as ‘health you can see’, which means enriching their food with healthy fats, glucosamine, and chondroitin, which should support a healthier and glossier looking coat.
  5. To prepare all their foods in their company-owned kitchens in Texas, which are certified by the USDA National Organic Program.

Despite getting into the game late, Merrick offers a wide range of premium cat foods including dry food, wet food, raw mixers, and treats. They have three main lines. The first is Purrfect Bistro, their original line, which offers a range of standard cat foods for different life stages and needs.

Their second line is a limited ingredient product very similar to their classic line but adapted for cats with food sensitivities and allergies. Their final line is called Backcountry and is their high-end food that uses all natural ingredients.

But which of their lines offers the best nutrition for your cat and the best value for money?

The Verdict

Overall, Merrick is a good quality cat food that exceeds pretty well when it comes to providing natural, species appropriate foods for cats. For me, their Backcountry grain-free morsels are the best of their wet foods, but it also comes with quite a hefty price tag. Their Purrfect Bistro pate is also a good wet food choice if you are looking for something more affordable.

All of Merrick’s dry cat foods are pretty solid choices as far as dry cat foods go. But if you looking for something a bit special, try their Backcountry raw infused dry food as a way of introducing raw nutrition into your cat’s diet.

The 9 Best Premium Dry Cat Foods of 2021, According to a Veterinarian

Final Verdict

The best overall premium dry cat food is the Crave Grain Free High Protein Indoor Adult Cat Food (view at Amazon). It boasts a protein-rich blend of high-quality meat, carbs, vitamins, and minerals. Plus, it comes in multiple feline-approved poultry and fish recipes. However, Hill's Science Diet Adult Indoor Dry Cat Food (view at Amazon) is another great choice. The vet-approved formula is packed with meat, whole grains, animal fat, fish oil, and veggie fibers.

Life stage

Match your cat’s life stage to the dry food you choose to feed them. Kittens have unique nutritional needs as they grow and develop, so it makes sense to feed them accordingly. Through the active adult years, feed your cat a balanced diet that will supply plenty of nutrients and energy to keep them healthy and happy. Senior cats will have different diet criteria than either of these first two life stages, so pick a formula that has been developed for your kitty’s golden years.

Flavor

This is a matter of taste, but the fact is that some felines are more finicky than others. Finding a dry cat food that your cat will eat and appreciate is sometimes a challenge, especially if you’re transitioning from wet cat food. While limited ingredient foods are good for digestion, they’re not always as appetizing to some cats. You may need to experiment with different protein sources and ingredients to find a dry cat food that your cat will gobble up.

Essential nutrients

Your cat needs certain nutrients to thrive, including amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. For instance, taurine is an essential amino acid that your cat needs to absorb through diet. Look for dry cat food that meets the minimum daily requirements for essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals.

One thing to note is that your cat does not need carbohydrates in his or her diet, although there's no data to show what the optimal carbohydrate percent for cats should be.

FAQ

  • If you're unsure of how much dry food to feed your particular cat, you can refer to the packaging for guidelines or check with your veterinarian. To give you a general idea, you should consider factors such as your cat's weight and age. Most adult cats (one year and older) can be fed around a quarter of a cup of dry food twice daily. Older cats or ones with special needs however, may need to be fed more often. This would be a case to check in with your veterinarian.

Ideally, it's recommended to feed your cat a combination of mostly wet food with dry food mixed in. This is because dry food is higher in carbs and cats don't generally need carbs in their diet. In this case, you can look at the recommended feeding amount on each type of food and half them.

  • When selecting a premium dry food, it's important to select one that contains essential nutrients to meet your cat's needs. As stated above, taurine is one essential amino acid you should always look for in a dry food because it helps with digestion, muscle function, and immunity. Look for other ingredients like protein, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Fiber helps with digestive function and weight management while high-quality protein (turkey, fish, chicken, etc.) keeps your cat energized and satisfied. A dry food high in omega-3 fatty acids is also more ideal as it helps promote healthy fur and skin.

  • Like any other pet food, dry cat food can go bad. Always check the "best by" date to make sure your food isn't past its due date. To best preserve your dry food, keep it in the original packaging—these bags are designed to help food maintain its freshness as long as possible.

Make sure to seal the bag properly after use to avoid air exposure as well. Air exposure can cause degradation of the food. Store your food in a cool, dry place as opposed to out in the sun as that can cause the temperature and humidity to rise in the bag.
