When we purchased our home nearly four years ago, I envisioned a beautiful white pergola on the patio. Pergolas add so much character, charm, and substance to an outdoor space. They help ground an outdoor room, provide shade and structure, and increase the comfort and enjoyment of time spent outside. Adding a pergola even has the potential to add market value to your home! As families spend more time at home, outdoor living spaces have become increasingly more desirable making homes with beautiful outdoor spaces more marketable. Today we are going to explore choosing the perfect pergola, French country tips and tricks for pergola and patio decorating, and mood lighting tips for your pergola.
Choosing the Perfect Pergola
Earlier this spring, I talked about building our own pergola, but first decided to explore some prefabricated options. I was already familiar with Backyard Discovery for their wooden swing sets, playsets and playhouses, but recently discovered that they also offer a large home and patio collection, including pergolas, gazebos and accessories.
We chose to go with the 1410 Hawthorne Traditional Steel Pergola to place over our outdoor dining table. This is the hottest part of our patio that really needed a better shade option. Here are some of the reasons why we love it:
- Requires ZERO maintenance and easy to clean
- Made of % Galvanized Steel making it stronger than other aluminum or vinyl products on the market
- Rust proof, corrosion proof, and UV harm proof
- Includes an exclusive PowerPort for charging devices, powering up music, plugging in lights, or anything else to add to the fun
- Hidden joints for a sleek appearance
- Beautiful, traditional design that matches my aesthetic
- Easy to assemble using the BILT app
- White color acts as a reflector and doesnt block light to the adjoining room inside
Our pergola arrived in several heavy boxes, ready to assemble. While I tackled a different project for work, my husband and 16 year old son spent a full day assembling the pergola together. The assembly directions were clear and easy to follow and the pergola was built quickly and without any issues. We are a DIY family with above-average assembly skills, but my son did a lot of the assembly himself and found it straightforward. You can use the BILT app for 3D instructions and guides.
If youre considering adding a pergola to your outdoor area this summer, do it! Backyard Discovery has a wide variety of both wood and steel pergolas in a variety of finishes. Use promo code Homestories10 at checkout to receive 10% off of your purchase sitewide. I noticed that some items I love are currently out of stock, but Im told that there is a restock coming for many sold-out items in mid-June. French Country Tips & Tricks for Pergola and Patio Decorating
Tip 1: Choose a tight color palette of white, neutrals, blues, or grays.
This decorating tip never expires! Ive said it before and Ill say it again. If you want to instantly create a pulled together look, keep your color palette tight. Modern French Country colors utilize grays, greiges, whites, blues, and blush pinks. Pops of color are often added with flowers and foliage.
Tip 2: Choose French country patterns such as stripes, checks, toile, lace, florals, and provence patterns. French country furniture is often upholstered in brushed linen, making neutral outdoor furniture cushions the perfect backdrop for this look!
The modern French country style is elegance meets rustic. I used gray toile, gray check, and textured white pillows to add some French country flair to my outdoor furniture and hammock. The fringe on the hammock and market umbrella complement the fringe on the toss pillows and white pattern on the outdoor rug.
I bring my toss pillows indoors during inclement weather, so I dont worry too much about using only outdoor pillow covers and inserts.
Tip 3: Choose planters that mimic rustic country textures such as galvanized metal, zinc, concrete, limestone, painted terracotta, market baskets, and rustic wine barrels.
I used mostly metal buckets and olive buckets for planters with a few wood and basket accessories. I like how the galvanized planters match my dining chairs. I often just purchase metal mop buckets at Lowes and use them as shade planters, or planter covers. They are inexpensive and look great! Just be sure to drill plenty of drainage holes in the bottom of the buckets before planting.
The baskets that contain the climbing star jasmine are temporary, but the middle insert is removable making them the perfect cover until they can be planted. You can find many plastic and all-weather wicker planters on the market to mimic this look.
Tip 4: Choose container plants that fit within a French Country aesthetic such as hydrangeas, roses, lavender, peonies, and other garden blooms.
I used purple hydrangeas, lavender, star jasmine, ferns, and some delicate purple and pink cottage flowers on my patio. I used more color in the containers around my seating area.
I will plant the hydrangeas at the end of the season, but for now they look beautiful as container plants!
Mood Lighting Tips for Your Pergola
Tip 1: Add lots of string lights!
In my opinion pergolas and string lights go together like campfires and smores! You simply shouldnt dare have one without the other! I spent entirely too much time trying to decide exactly which kinds of lights I wanted and how I wanted them to hang. Im not sure this is the final look, but for now Im thrilled with it. I used three strands of these outdoor lights and simply wove them back and forth across the pergola to create swags.
Tip 2: Add a chandelier!
The chandelier over the table is simply an LED battery-operated lantern tied to the rope. I can easily switch out my chandeliers with other lanterns to create different looks if desired. I purchased the rope I used to hang the chandelier and hammock on Amazon. I also purchased metal rope clips to secure the rope here.
Tip 3: Add tea lights and candles!
Tea lights are a beautiful way to add more ambiance to your outdoor space. I like to use them on the dining table and even on the patio end tables. You can choose citronella tea lights for added bug repelling protection.
Tip 4: Add solar powered lanterns!
I love our solar powered mason jar lanterns and use them frequently to add extra light around the patio. They are perfect hanging, or placed in a dark corner.

Welcome to our Loveliest Looks Of Summer Tour. I have teamed up with five other bloggers to bring you lots of summer fashion and outdoor decor inspo! Here in Utah we get all four seasons, so each time a new one rolls around I am so ready! This summer is especially exciting because it is our first summer in our new home. Some of you have followed along the building and design journey of this home (all here on the blog), but to those of you who are new to Remington Avenue, Welcome. My name is Mysha and I am an interior designer and DIY enthusiast. I designed this home from the ground up and continue to share my design process as I complete each space. Today I am excited to share my entire french country patio reveal with pops of blue as part of the Loveliest looks of Summer tour, hosted by Summer Adams & A Blissful Nest!
Lets walk out to my french country dining patio
Our family loves to be outside, so naturally I designed our outdoor living spaces to be comfortable for eating and lounging throughout most of the year. Right off the kitchen are these large black french doors. They match all of the window style throughout my home and you can find out how I got the look of steel windows for less HERE. We love to crank open the kitchen windows and let the summer breeze.
Walking out to the patio youll notice the black decking. My patio floor is polyurethane decking that I designed to look like a tile inlay. It is super durable but makes a great design statement. I love the contrast against my painted white brick home. Click here for the custom exterior paint formula. I still have a couple projects Id like to complete on this patio, ie: build a large window box for flowers and create a built-in grill station. Im hoping to tackle those this summer so stay tuned for the tutorials. For now, we are enjoying lots of summer meals on our newly painted outdoor table. I bought this pottery barn table second hand about 4 years ago. Last month I decided to paint it white for a fresh look. I love it paired with the black and white bistro chairs at each end.
Add some color with fresh fruit and flowers to create an easy summer table for entertaining. Pops of pink combined with the blue and white color scheme create a fresh festive vibe. I love my marble melamine dishes for outdoor entertaining. They look great while being kid friendly. Win Win!
Take a Tour of my Black Pergola patio with pops of blue
Im sure youve already noticed the giant black pergola standing 10ft high over my lower patio. I had it custom built by a company called Notched. They do great work. Originally is was stained a grayish brown, but I recently had it re-stained with a custom oil based stain to match my black doors. Sometimes even designers dont get it right the first time. I strung 3 strands of black cafe lights to create a moody ambience at night. Click here for my cafe lights. They are plugged into an electrical outlet on the back of my fireplace structure. The lower patio measures 20x 23 and is entirely formed out of pavers. The basement walkout walls are made from the Belgard Brookshire collection and the patio floor out of the Cambridge Cobble collection. The color is Victorian throughout. All of my landscaping, hard and soft surfaces, was done by Four Seasons Landscaping. Just ask for Bob and let him know Mysha sent yaI am happy to say we are now friends! Just last week I had him come add some climbing wisteria to each pergola column. I cannot wait to see it grow and cascade over the structure.
My entire home is what I call Modern french country style. The landscaping and outdoor spaces are no exception. You can find my landscaping plans here. Hint: I used a lot of boxwoods future hedges! Oh and you should def check out my most recent DIY where I overhauled my entire driveway, adding some major curb appeal with paint! I know crazy right!? The lower patio is definitely the hangout zone. The custom outdoor fireplace is gas for convenience picture smores with the family and causal dinners with friends. I love symmetry so two matching outdoor sofas seemed like the right choice. I adore the natural color of these weatherproof sofas. The entire collection features a grand sofa (mine), a loveseat, swivel chairs, and an ottoman. I try not to be too matchy matchy so I mixed in some fun striped floor pillows and a stand alone coffee table. Unfortunately the coffee table I ordered has not arrived yet, but you can click here to see whats coming. Im obsessed!
Blue outdoor pillows perfect for any summer patio
Admittedly I went a little crazy on the outdoor throw pillows can you blame me? I love mixing textures and patterns to create visual interest and added comfort. I recently purchased all of these outdoor pillows from Serena & Lily and they can be used indoors as well. You can shop my entire pillow collection below (the light blue woven one in the center is my fav). Tip: I like to buy my outdoor pillow inserts from Ikea. They are inexpensive so I double up and use 2 inserts in each pillow. Dont use down pillow inserts outdoors- they will mildew.
Im still on the fence about what kind of fence I want to install. I love wrought iron, but it doesnt do much for privacy. Ideally I would plant some fast growing henges or vines to create more of a barrier but that takes time. If you you have any good fence recommendations please feel free to add them to the comment section below. Thanks for joining me for an outdoor summer tour. Make sure to check out all the fun ideas from the other bloggers below.
