Custom 2003 Ford Ranger Edge - Money Talks

Getting a Daily Dose of Drag Wasn't Easy in This Ex-4x4 Ranger

Ford Ranger Full Overview

Jordan Ray had good intentions. He knew he wanted a hammered pickup that would turn heads and make the ladies gravitate toward him. He even hung out in a few shops and soaked up all the information he thought was necessary to avoid the pitfalls that plagued some of the truck projects he'd seen before him. He decided a Ford Ranger was the way to go, and since FoMoCo had ditched the infamous I-beam front suspension after the '97 model-year that devoured the tires on lowered Rangers, it would be a cheap and easy buildup. After eyeballing the brochure for a spankin'-new '03 Ranger Edge, with its coilover-suspended frontend, he ordered his new mini and figured laying it flat on the tarmac would be no sweat.

Although, once the truck arrived at the dealership, his heart hit the floor, as he looked at the truck and realized that Ford had put the silky-smooth Edge body atop a factory 4x4 chassis. Sure, the front differential and transfer case weren't in the way, but the front of the chassis sure was. Undaunted, he ripped out the front suspension and 'bagged the truck anyway. It didn't lay out, but what the heck, it was a 'bagged mini so that was worth something, right? With a new lease on sport truck life, Jordan rolled the truck into the paint shop to add a roll pan and to color-match it to the truck. During it's tenure inside the shop, Jordan had an epiphany and realized that his truck could indeed be as low as the trucks of his peers. A few hours with a torch, Sawzall, and MIG welder was all it took to separate the front frame section from the rest and relocate it upward. A few gussets here and there, and with the front suspension now sitting 3-1/2 inches higher than it did from the factory, the truck laid hard and flat.

Jordan's truck hit the street with a vengeance, allegedly tearing up the asphalt and removing road reflectors, left and right. At least, that's what the cop told Jordan as he nailed him with a fat ticket for destruction of public property a few weeks later. You see, as Jordan was embarking on another draggin' mission near the local college, he actually dragged right through the bottom of the stock gas tank, rendering his truck immobile and vulnerable to the passing po-po. Fixing the gas tank and the ticket cost a substantial amount of cash, but not nearly as much as what his next unfortunate bout of bad luck would earn him.

Jordan kept working on the truck, shaving unnecessary items like the door handles and repainting the body panels. Finally, he took the plunge and repainted the entire body of his mini with a smooth red and black two-tone scheme. The new look earned his truck a spot in our sister publication, Mini Truckin' magazine, and also the attention of a heartless bastard who decided to attack his truck with a car key outside a local pub.

Enter paintjob number three, which was necessary to fix the damage. This time around, Jordan chose a silky-smooth black base and realistic flame job, using House of Kolor paints. To date, the truck has been repainted four times and racked up numerous tickets because of its tendency to remove road reflectors from the Texas highways. We asked Jordan if all the hassle, aggravation, and money was worth it, and he said, "I can't own a 'bagged truck and not drag it. I feel sorry for all those people who have to trailer theirs because they are missing out on all the fun."

Ford Ranger

The Ford Ranger falls far short of modern pickup-truck standards. It's ungainly and stiff-riding; has a rough and noisy, inefficient engine; and a cramped, uncomfortable cabin. The interior is crudely finished. Compact dimensions and a usefully sized bed are the Ranger's only pluses. Even if you took thousands off its list price, the Ranger still would not be a bargain.

Ford Edge

For the 1990s-2000s Ford design theme, see New Edge.

Motor vehicle

The Ford Edge is a range of crossover SUVs manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced for the 2007 model year, the Edge is the first mid-size CUV marketed by Ford in North America; the model line is currently in its second generation. Deriving its name from a trim package of the Ford Ranger, the Ford Edge is positioned between the Ford Escape and the Ford Explorer within the Ford product line.

Sharing its underpinnings with the Ford Fusion sedan, Ford has also produced the model line as the Lincoln MKX (since 2019, the Lincoln Nautilus); the first generation was also produced as the Mazda CX-9. The second generation is also marketed by Ford of Europe, positioned between the Kuga (Escape) and the Explorer PHEV.

All production of the Ford Edge is sourced from Ford of Canada at Oakville Assembly (Oakville, Ontario) alongside the Nautilus.

For 2015, the Ford Edge was redesigned with a new Taurus and Explorer-like grille, new headlights, LED combination taillights, increased interior room, and a rear-view camera. This generation of the Edge comes with a standard EcoBoost engine, the all-new 2.0-L (only the displacement and bore-center spacing carry over), which has a new twin-scroll turbo to boost low-end torque figures. Unlike the previous 2.0-L EcoBoost, the 2015 generation has a towing capacity of 3500 lb and is available with all-wheel drive. The midspecification engine is a 3.5-L V6, with slightly reduced power output. The highest engine in the range, powering Sport models, is the new 2.7-L twin-turbo EcoBoost V6.

For the first time, Ford marketed the Edge in European markets (as part of the company's "One Ford" strategy); it sits above the Ford Kuga. Gasoline engines are not sold in Europe; instead, this market receives either of two turbo-charged Duratorq diesel engines as used in other Ford Europe products such as the Ford Mondeo. Both engines are mated to an all-wheel drive system as standard; no option for two-wheel drive is available. The two engines are rated at 180 hp and 210 hp. Which output the customer receives is entirely dependent on the transmission choice, with a six-speed manual as standard mated to the 180-hp unit. A six-speed PowerShift automatic dual-clutch transmission option is available, mated to the 210-hp unit.

Ford Edge was sold in Europe as a premium large crossover with only high-end trims and diesel engines at prices 50% higher than in North America. Due to low sales, the model was limited in 2019 to only a few countries, with the last stocks sold in early 2021.[14]

  • The longer three-row Edge is available exclusively in China.

2019 facelift[edit]

In January 2018, Ford announced that the entire Edge lineup (alongside the Lincoln MKX's renaming) was to receive a midcycle facelift for 2019, which replaces the existing Ford three-bar front grille with a design similar to the larger Ford Explorer, new aluminum-alloy wheel options for each trim level, new exterior and interior color combinations, and a 12-speaker B&O Play surround-sound system that replaces the existing Sony system. All models receive a newly designed Ford 8F35 eight-speed automatic transmission (featuring automatic stop-start technology), which also allows the base 2.0-L EcoBoost turbocharged inline I4 engine to gain a 5-horsepower (3.7 kW) boost, and all Edges to achieve improved United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fuel economy.

With the launch of the 2018 model in Australia (February 2019 in New Zealand[15]), the Edge is sold as the Ford Endura, and is the successor to the Ford Territory.[16][17] In Australia, the Endura was made available in Trend, ST-Line, and Titanium trim levels.[18] In November 2020, the Endura was announced as being discontinued in Australia by the end of the year.[19] It had been discontinued in New Zealand prior to this.

The 2019 Ford Edge was offered in nine exterior colors, some of which were new for 2019.[20]

In addition, the 2019 Edge offered three new safety technologies:

  • Post-collision braking automatically applies brake pressure when a collision event is detected.
  • Evasive steering assist helps drivers in steering around stopped or slower vehicles to avoid a possible collision.
  • Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go lane centering allows the vehicle to maintain a comfortable driving distance and helps reduce stress during longer drives.

The 2019 Edge made its debut at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and went on sale in the spring of 2018 as an early 2019 model year vehicle.[21]

For the 2020 model year, dual-zone automatic climate control was included on all trims. However, the CD player was removed.[22]

Edge Plus (China, 2021 facelift)[edit]

The Edge in China was facelifted with the rest of the world in 2019 while receiving another facelift for the 2021 model year exclusively for the Chinese three-row Edge called the Ford Edge Plus. The Edge Plus features a slightly redesigned exterior and a different interior design. The interior features two new displays measuring 8 and 13.2 inches across and a new squared-off multi-function steering wheel. The updated center console houses both the climate controls and the air vents, while a cover below conceals a power socket, a single USB port and a wireless charger. The Edge Plus is powered by the previous 2.0-liter turbo-inline-4 engine producing 245 PS (242 hp; 180 kW) and 390 N⋅m (39.8 kg⋅m; 288 lb⋅ft), which links to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Both FWD and AWD are offered.[23]

Edge ST[edit]

Ford also announced that a new model of Edge, the ST, would be offered instead of the Sport as the top trim level for the line. It will feature a 2.7-L EcoBoost twin-turbocharged V6 engine producing 335 horsepower (250 kW), a modest 20 horsepower (15 kW) increase over the 2018 Sport, which used the same engine. ST styling included a dark-finished mesh front grille, aluminum-alloy wheels, and unique interior.

Ford Edge SUV in-depth review - Carbuyer

Wees slim, check van tevoren CARFAX. Jouw bron van voertuighistorie.

CARFAX - JOUW PARTNER IN KENTEKENCHECKS

Now discussing:

Did you know that BMW's Formula 1 engines of 1980-83 were built with engine blocks taken from used street cars?

It was discovered during early testing that the 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder screamer could better endure the stress of producing 1200 horsepower if the block was "aged" by about 60,000 miles of regular driving. The process somehow relieved internal tensions in the casting, making the blocks more durable.

This fact has absolutely nothing to do with the Ford Ranger Edge Plus SuperCab 4x4 pictured here. We just wanted to give you something guaranteed to suck the air right out of your next dinner party. We also wanted to make the case that even though the Ranger doesn't have 1200 horsepower, there are tangible reasons to choose Ford's compact pickup over a Brabham-BMW BT50 F1 car.

For one thing, the Ranger has headlights. For another, the Ranger can be seen from behind the hood ornament of a Grand Marquis, even by people looking out between the dash and steering-wheel rim.

The Ranger's cockpit can also accommodate more than one five-foot-seven Brazilian. In fact, it can accommodate four such Brazilians, although the ones in the back will have to squeeze into two folding jump seats nestled in a paltry 13 cubic feet of space. At least there's an extra pair of doors to access that space, which brings up another glaring omission by the Brabham's designer-doors.

Tell the dealer you want a Ranger Edge SuperCab 4x4, and he'll show you a Ranger XL gussied up with body-colored bumpers and wheel-lip moldings, front and rear anti-roll bars, mud flaps, cloth seats, a CD player, and a textured vinyl floor that resembles sneaker treads. Specify the "Plus" trim, and for another $2485 you'll get a six-disc CD changer, cruise control, various power widgets, remote locking, and larger tires on 16-inch alloy rims. Tell the dealer you want a BT50, and he'll point you to the nearest Chinese buffet.

At the risk of belaboring the point, the Ranger's optional 4.0-liter SOHC V-6 lacks relative vitality. But it can make all 207 horsepower and 238 pound-feet of torque for more than three laps of the Caesars Palace parking lot without ejecting its pistons. Absent the optional $295 limited-slip differential, the V-6 punted our 4020-pound Ranger to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds and through a quarter-mile in 16.5 seconds at 84 mph, respectable times considering the turbo boost control was set to "nonexistent."

The Ranger's automatic gearbox has five ratios to choose from and does its deeds with reasonable fluidity. The two-speed transfer case features no electronic brain, just a solenoid to engage four-wheel-drive high and low at the command of a dashboard rotary knob. Unless you opt for the limited-slip axle, the open differentials will generate nothing more than wild wheelspin in mud, making the Ranger best suited to off-road adventures on hard surfaces.

Edge Rangers all sport the 4x4's extra 0.7-inch axle clearance (for 7.4 inches total). The extra altitude considerably hampers the Ranger's ground effects, although chassis stiffness and cabin isolation were both improved in the model-year-2000 redesign. The live rear axle still hops around on corrugated surfaces, but with less punishment meted out to the occupants.

A BT50 comes with enough space behind the driver for a small drink bottle, whereas the Ranger has enough space for a fish pond. The box is stamped with depressions in the sidewalls so a four-by-eight-foot sheet of plywood slides in above the wheel wells. The $195 for the optional bed extender, a removable cage of aluminum tubes that rotates out over the open tailgate to lengthen the load floor by 16 inches, represents money wisely spent.

The $24,080 for our Edge Plus SuperCab 4x4 is all the money you'll want to spend on a Ranger (only the Edge Flareside costs more-another $65 to start-but it can't be fitted with the bed extender) and about half the money you'll need for a BT50's insurance premium. True, if you buy a Ranger now it won't have 1200 horsepower, but drive it for a couple years, and who knows?
