Hestia (character)

Hestia (Japanese: ヘスティア, Hepburn: Hesutia) is a fictional character who appears in Fujino Ōmori's light novel series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (shortened to DanMachi), and its manga and anime adaptations. The series is set in the fictional world of Orario, where people join groups called Familia run by gods and goddesses, who serve a range of functions from dungeon crawling to crafting items. Hestia herself is the head and resident deity of the Hestia Familia (ヘスティア・ファミリア), a small and initially lowly group whom at first contained only herself and protagonist dungeon explorer Bell. After failing to recruit anyone into her group, and Bell being unable to join any of the larger, more reputable Familias, the two join forces thus beginning their adventures in the series.

Hestia has become an extremely popular and somewhat of a breakout character in anime and manga fandom. She has also appeared in several official DanMachi related merchandise, and has been the subject of positive reception, with critics focusing on her relationship with Bell, attractiveness, and role in the series. She has also become a popular subject of cosplay, causing a trend in Japan where women attempted to replicate her iconic costume.

Hestia is Bell's resident deity, in charge of taking care of Bell's development as an adventurer. She is jealous of Bell's involvement with other girls' affairs, including Ais', but is still in love with him, devoted to protecting him, and helping with his growth, even after learning that he only views her as family.[LN 5] She and Bell live in a room under an abandoned church, and she works part-time for the Guild as a clerk, and also some food stands to help Bell with day-to-day living expenses,[LN 1] until moving to the former palace of the Apollo Familia upon defeating them in the War Game and claiming their assets. Wary about what could happen should the existence of Bell's special trait be revealed to the world, she keeps it a secret from everyone else, including Bell, until sharing it with the other members of her Familia upon being inquired about it.[LN 7]

Hestia is depicted with blue eyes and black hair tied into twin ponytails. She usually wears a white mini-dress with a blue ribbon around her collar and another tied around her waist, back and arms, which has become the character's most defining feature.[1] She also wears a pair of white gloves and usually goes barefoot. Although petite, she has been nicknamed the "Loli Big-Boobs" (ロリ巨乳, rori kyonyū) for her large bust size, which makes some of her deity peers like Loki jealous.[LN 1] Unlike most other deities, Hestia is depicted as energetic and kind, if not slightly childish; and is also willing to form romantic relationships with a member of her Familia, being clearly infatuated with Bell.[LN 1] After descending to the Lower [human] World; Hestia was initially unable to recruit anyone into her Familia due to not being well known and looked down upon. After failing to recruit for the 50th time, she noticed Bell and decided to secretly follow him. She later found out that Bell had also been trying to enter a Familia, but was too repeatedly rejected. Hestia then took the chance to recruit him, which Bell happily agreed upon.[LN 1]

Hestia is voiced by Inori Minase in Japanese[2] and by Luci Christian in English.[3]

If you keep up with current anime trends then you are probably aware of Hestia, even if you've never watched a single episode of DanMachi. Rarely have characters exploded onto the anime scene with the swiftness and intensity of Bell's diminutive patron goddess. Just a casual perusal of any fanart gallery or doujinshi collection from the past couple months will yield hundreds of Hestias. Granted, quite a bit of that attention has come from the blue ribbon meant to support her sizable cleavage, but her appeal goes well beyond just being sexy. Hestia has the kind of captivating charm that innumerable anime girls strive for, but few ever achieve [] She cares for and worries over the lead protagonist Bell Cranel beyond just seeing him as a love interest. She puts herself in great debt to acquire a weapon suitable for his needs, and is even willing to expose herself to great danger to ensure his safety. Granted, these are fairly typical endeavors for anime girls in love, but her actions also come with a special chemistry with Bell. These two are a neat pairing [] No one else comes close to clicking so strongly with Bell.

Theron Martin, Anime News Network[4]

Theron Martin of Anime News Network labelled the "Hestia Factor" as one of the reasons for DanMachi's success, citing Inori Minase's voice acting, character development, as well as relationship with Bell.[4] In a review of the series' first novel, Martin further wrote that "Fujino Ōmori's writing skill is actually higher than average [] By the end of the novel we have a very good sense of who most of the major players are and where they stand, especially Bell and Hestia."[5]iDigitalTimes, in a review of the DanMachi anime, found the relationship between Bell and Hestia to be "really touching", writing "she obviously loves him and wants to be with him, not simply as patron goddess but as a lover. Bell’s ignorance to her every overture is a grating genre standard, but his trademark obliviousness lessens Hestia’s love for Bell not a whit."[6]

In an article titled "Is It Wrong To Try To Understand What Is Going On With Hestia's Improbable Boob Ribbon", iDigitalTimes commented that "Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon? stands out for providing us with one of Japanese Twitter’s latest and greatest trends", with that trend being "Hestia's boob ribbon", which "is all over the place lately."[7]Kotaku's Richard Eisenbeis believed that DanMachi "Really [Isn't] About Picking Up Girls In A Dungeon", as the characters actually have depth, and "The other characters, while rarely as deep [as Bell], are likewise entertaining. Hestia is head-over-heals for Bell — who of course could never even fathom the idea of a goddess being in love with him. But while quick to anger and jealous to a fault, she is willing to put her money where her mouth is when it comes to supporting Bell — even if that means debasing herself to the point of taking part-time jobs. Through her, we also get a peek into the society of gods and why they are willing to sponsor heroes — bragging rights, mainly."[8]

Anime News Network's Rebecca Silverman, in a review of the Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? anime, wrote that "Bell and Hestia [] have a nice, comfortable feeling to their relationship. Yes, Hestia's clearly in love with him, but there's still a coziness to their interactions that feels both natural and heartwarming."[9] She further wrote, in a list of the "Best Anime of " where DanMachi ranked third, that "the chemistry between the leads, plucky young adventurer Bell Cranel and the goddess Hestia is fantastic, with the warmth of their relationship coming through not only in the animation, but also in the characters' voices. With or without any romance the two make a great pair, and the fact that Hestia clearly wants something more from their relationship than Bell does does not detract from the way the two get along is pretty amazing."[10] Although "the iconic look of the hero's patron goddess, the diminutive-but-stacked Hestia" caught the most attention, "the series also featured an intriguing setting, some unexpectedly-involved character development, great artwork as fantasy series go, and some truly outstanding battle scenes", which resulted in Theron Martin also placing DanMachi onto his list of 's best anime, in 5th place.[11]

The popularity of the character has made her a frequent subject of cosplay; with Anime News Network writing that "she has become something of a cosplay challenge."[12]

The character has become extremely popular in anime and manga fandom.[13] This includes being prominently featured in fan dōjinshi, with the Comic1 dōjinshi event being "filled" with the character, including dedicated corners to Hestia.[13] In a list of the "Top 22 Characters Who Transcended Their Series in " by anime website GoBoiano, Hestia placed first.[14]Italian restaurant La Ricetta in Zama, Kanagawa features pancakes prepared with anime and video game character art, including Hestia.[15] The popularity of Hestia's character has made her a frequent subject of cosplay,[16] with Baseel humorously noting that Hestia's costume, including "the boob-lifting string and impressive bust that the character is so closely associated with", has become more famous than the character herself.[17]

Free Hestia blue ribbons were given away in Akihabara, leading Casey Baseel of Rocket News 24 to comment that "anime series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, also known by its Japanese nickname Danmachi, looks like the breakout hit of this TV season. What’s the secret to its success? [] [It] could be the outfit of female lead Hestia, which is inventive even by the already outlandishly sexy standards of anime costume design with its boob-lifting ribbon that’s become known as rei no himo, or “The String” among fans in Japan."[18] Popularity of the character has also "exploded" on Tumblr, Line, Twitter, and Pixiv,[19] with various fan art of Hestia being featured.[20]

Hestia's character design, especially her costume's characteristic blue string, has also gathered attention. Several cosplayers have attempted to replicate its effect,[21] using the Twitter hashtag "#例の紐", translating to #StringExample[22] or #ThatString.[13] This has led to humorous images featuring the string being posted by fans, with the trend having been extended to toys and collectable items, with some pictures showing dolls in a copycat costumes as well as a Lego figure.[1] A fad of Japanese women tying a blue ribbon underneath their breasts in similar fashion to Hestia's costume has been described by the Daily Mirror as the "weirdest craze ever", and that "We've seen some odd fads in our time, but this must be the strangest."[23] Similarly, British newspaper Metro wrote "We know some strange things go on in Japan – but this latest fad is an eye opener".[1]

Anjali Patel of women's magazine Bustle commented that "Hestia's blue chest ribbon has become part of her signature look in the show, a look that girls across Japan — not just cosplayers, but everyday women — are starting to emulate", and "emulating cool anime heroines would definitely earn anyone some major cool points."[24] Alix Culbertson of Sunday Express reported that "Hordes of Japanese women are tying ribbons below their breasts and around their arms in a bid to increase their busts", resulting in mixed results.[25] GoBoiano also noted this trend, jokingly adding "such a quality ribbon".[26]

The character has received positive critical reception, and this popularity has led to her being featured in several promotional efforts and merchandise of the series. An Akihabara Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? lottery features a figure of Hestia as the grand prize, with other prizes including Hestia-themed cushions, desk mats, scarf towels, a glass, and one of three badges.[12] Another figure from Good Smile Company also features Hestia, with the character striking a pose reminiscent of the anime's promotional images.[27] Good Smile Company has made a second, Nendoroid version of a Hestia figure, which comes with three expressions: smiling, confident, and upset.[28] Additional action figures, including a 26&#;cm one by Hobby Japan[29] and a Hestia figure in the chibi-style figurine line Cu-poche by Japanese figure company Kotobukiya also exist.[30]

Massively multiplayer online role-playing gameWizardry Online features Hestia's string as an equippable accessory for the game's characters, as part of a crossover collaboration with DanMachi.[31] A chapter of Hayate the Combat Butler features character Hinagiku Katsura in Hestia's "trending outfit", and Lynzee Loveridge of Anime News Network writing that "Hestia and her notorious costume design have been picking up steam."[32] Official Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? merchandise from Animate include Hestia tapestries, Japanese curry, and clear files.[33] Figurine maker Kotobukiya have produced a Hestia figure prominently featuring this "bosom-lifting string".[22]

Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon?: 10 Unknown Facts About Hestia

Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?— or Danmachi for short— is a fantasy adventure series that follows the adventures of a boy named Bell Cranel. Bell is a member of a familiar like most young adventurers, but the Hestia Familia is a bit different from others.

RELATED: The 5 Strongest Families In Shounen Anime (& The 5 Weakest)

For starters, it is run by the Goddess Hestia, who doesn't behave like many of the other familiar heads and only has a single member of her familiar. Many fans love Hestia for this, though— despite her jealous ways, her personality stands out from most of the characters shown in the series.

10 Lived With Hephaestus

Before Hestia met Bell or even started her familiar, she descended with no place to stay. Luckily, she was close friends with Hephaestus, who ended up taking her in for quite some time before making her find a place of her own.

Most fans know that Hestia is not rich by any means, but the fact that she had literally nothing in the beginning is a bit sad to think about for most fans.

9 Works Two Jobs

Despite being a Goddess, Hestia is more than willing to go out on a limb if it means helping her familiar. To help pay for Bell's blade, she actually takes on not one but two part-time jobs in order to pay off the weapon.

Many anime fans can relate to this as working two jobs is required in many fields to have a sustainable life, especially when someone is trying to take care of their partner or their children.

8 She Is Under 5ft

Hestia is rather short, but many fans don't realize how tiny she really is; in fact, she isn't even five feet tall. Hestia measures in at 4'7", which makes her much shorter than any other character from the show.

RELATED: Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon: The Most Powerful Captains, Ranked

Thanks to her height, Hestia also appears much younger than she actually is at times. This can be problematic and leads her to be teased from time to time by those around her.

7 She Refused Many Suitors

Hestia is a Goddess that never could find a man that she wanted to marry. It is revealed that before descending, she had several suitors ask for her hand, but she refused to date or fall in love with all of them.

She is revered as one of the three Virgin Goddesses and is seen as a pure. Although her connection to Bell may make viewers believe otherwise, Hestia is almost completely disinterested in romance.

6 Bell May Be The First Man She Loves

It was a shock that Hestia was so attached to Bell and that she has fallen in love with him due to her seeming disinterest in men. It's likely that Bell is the only man that she has ever loved and she's known for trying to be possessive over him.

Even after meeting tons of adventurers, she has shown no interest in anyone besides Bell, who sadly doesn't seem to return her feelings even in the slightest.

5 She Tried Over 50 Times To Recruit Members

Hestia has a small familia because no one wants to join up with her, and most adventurers wanted to go with the more well known and established Goddesses. When she first founded her familia, she went around town trying to find members.

In fact, Hestia had talked to over 50 different adventures, all of who rejected her offer to join her familia. This disheartened Hestia as she began to feel incredibly isolated, especially counting all of the rejection she had faced.

4 She is Family Oriented

Hestia is the Goddess of Hearth, and because of that, she is incredibly focused on protecting and providing for her home. In this case, her home is her familia, who she is constantly shown going above and beyond for.

RELATED: 10 Fantasy Anime To Watch If You Like Netflix's Dragon's Dogma

Even when faced with situations that would make her unhappy or force her to work more, she is happy to do it as long as it takes care of those around her— especially in the case of Bell.

3 She Is Humble

Hestia isn't a very prideful woman, which allows her to take care of others better as stated above. She doesn't complain about her living situation and is grateful when she gets to eat a good meal or spend time with Bell.

Unlike the other characters, she is very humble about her familia and doesn't get caught up in the grand schemes of the other families unless it involves protecting her own.

2 Intertwined With Bell

Bell and Hestia seem to have their destinies intertwined as they both had similar timelines. They both started their journeys around the same time and, much like Hestia, Bell was also rejected by the rest of the adventurers.

While most viewers know that she watches over him, their connection is much deeper than that, and it is highly likely that their meeting will change the city.

1 Puts Bell First

Hestia is a very generous woman who is above putting others first, especially in regards to Bell. While she does seem incredibly selfish on the outside, nearly everything she does is revealed to be for the sake of helping him out in some way.

She knows that her actions will ultimately help get him closer to Aiz and still helps to push him forward, even if it means that he will never fall in love with her.

Lili Joins Hestia’s Familia - DanMachi S2 Episode 3

Loli Big-Boobs (ロリ巨乳 Rori Kyonyū)

Hestia(ヘスティア) is a Goddess and head of the Hestia Familia.

Hestia is a beautiful and petite Goddess with a youthful appearance. She has blue eyes and mid-thigh length black hair tied into two twintails which reach down to her mid-thighs. Her hair is tied with hair accessories that feature blue and white petals along with bell-shaped ornaments. She has a small frame (4' 7"), which further emphasizes her breasts, hence the nickname "Loli Big-boobs."

Her usual attire is a white mini dress with a blue ribbon around her neck and one tied under her breasts around her arms, and a pair of white gloves. She is usually barefoot, but occasionally wears a pair of white flip-flops.

Hestia is a kind and energetic Goddess. She also dreams of being in a relationship with Bell and sees Ais and other girls as her love rivals. Despite this, she does acknowledge the children of the lower world. Hestia is also a hard worker, working two jobs just to pay off her debt for the Hestia Knife. However, she also has somewhat of a lazy side as she stayed with Hephaestus until she was forced out and later took a while to find work.

She has shown to feel no shame at all regarding her body, wearing clothes that highlight her large breasts and bathing completely naked with other girls in several occasions.

Back when she was in Heaven, Hestia was one of the gods to guard the sacred flame. After descending to the Lower World, she was taken care of by her friend Hephaestus. Soon after, she was asked to live on her own after she kept freeloading off of Hephaestus Familia and was given a room at an abandoned church.

Hestia tried to create her own familia, but wasn't able to recruit anyone. After failing to recruit for the 50th time, she noticed Bell and decided to secretly follow him. Hestia found out that Bell had been trying to enter a familia, but was rejected multiple times and seemed to be in the same boat. Hestia then took the chance to recruit him, which Bell happily agreed upon; becoming the first member of her familia. She took Bell to a bookstore, the location she already decided beforehand, and granted her Falna to her first dependent.

Hearth Manipulation: As guardian of the sacred flame, Hestia rules over the flame. However, this ability got weakened after she descended to the lower world, and therefore can’t really do much with it unless an altar is prepared for her, allowing her to summon her temple from Heaven. By mixing her blood with the logs used on a fire she is able to increase its power. According to Hestia, aside from the Gods that lived in Olympus, no one knew about this abilities of hers.

Virgin Goddess: As a virgin goddess, Hestia is immune to the Goddesses of Beauty's charms. When combined with her power over the flame it manages to compete even with Freya's charm, enabling her to undo it in order to remove her control over people.

Bell and his party make their way into the 20th Dungeon and once they’re on their way, Hestia sneaks off and meets with a cloaked figure who -- after revealing their identity to her -- leads the goddess down a secret path where Ouranos, the head of the Guild is waiting where the two of them discuss the truth behind Wiene’s identity.

Bell and the rest of the party, meanwhile, discover a secret passage inside the dungeon and are shocked to find a myriad of monsters wielding weapons. The pack of monsters attack the group and manages to overpower the Hestia Familia, focusing specifically on Wiene with their attacks. An opening pops up and one of the monsters moves in to attack Wiene. Both Lili and Haruhime try to shield her from the attack but Bell lands a blow before anyone can get hurt.

The monsters suddenly stop attacking and the Lizardman leading them begins to speak, shocking everyone even more. This is when Ray, the mysterious monster that approached Bell and Welf in the 19th Dungeon, reveals herself. The Lizardman, named Lyd, explains that they were testing the Hestia Familia in order to see if they were willing to protect Weine in a live or die situation. He explains that the monsters dwelling in the secret caverns of the 20th Dungeon are called Xenos, and that like Weine, are intelligent and are capable of human speech. Lyd offers to shake Bell’s hand, and after some hesitation Bell accepts, causing the rest of the Zenos to erupt in a cheerful uproar while welcoming him.

As Ouranos explains the situation to Hestia he reveals that he has a role he believes only her familia can play in the upcoming events revolving around the Xenos. When she inquires as to what that is, he tells her that he wishes for the Hestia Familia and its members to serve as a bridge between humanity and the Xenos.

This turn of events finally gets Ouranos involved in this season properly after watching things play out from the sidelines the last couple of weeks. The Xenos’ reveal, coupled with their new camaraderie with Bell and the rest of the Hestia Familia, should make for some interesting conflict when the rest of Orario inevitably finds out about them. How this will affect each of the Hestia Familia members’ relationships with other characters remains to be seen, but one thing to keep an eye on in the coming episode is what role Dix and the rest of the Ikelos Familia will play in pushing the upcoming conflict forward.

She gifted it to Hestia after she[Hestia] descends to help her and Vahn. The Hearth Manor is a large three floored mansion with a large iron fence around it. The home also has an inner garden, corridors, and a large front garden with flowers and trees. After it was renovated, a forge and a large wooden bath were added.

The Hestia Familia emblem is two winged snakes, one black and the other white, circling around a flame that was half-part aquamarine of Vahn's eyes while the other half was the crystalline blue of Hestia's eyes.

The Hestia Familia(ヘスティア・ファミリア) is an exploration type Familia that is led by Hestia.

Hestia Familia was at first an undersized Familia with a single member until the War Game, at which point several of Bell's allies joined the Familia to help. Despite their newfound fame after their victory, further recruitment of members failed after Hestia's debt was revealed.

The Hestia Familia home is known as the Hearth Mansion (の). It is the former Apollo Familia home that was given to them after winning the War Game. The Hearth Mansion is a large three-floored mansion with a large iron fence around it. The home also has an inner garden, corridors, and a large front garden with flowers and trees. After it was renovated, a forge and a large wooden bath were added.

The Hestia Familia formerly lived in the basement of an old abandoned church that was given to Hestia by Hephaestus. A secret door led to the basement which was in a P shape. The church was destroyed by Apollo Familia during their attack. However, the basement was later used to hide Wiene.

The Hestia Familia emblem is fire with a bell, representing Hestia and Bell. She chose this emblem because the Familia started with just the two of them.

The Hestia Familia theme revolves around the fire as Hestia has a second name, Vesta, meaning "the fire that keeps on burning".
