Sparklight (Cable One, NewWave) Modems & Routers

The following modems are approved Sparklight cable modems for residential services, formerly Cable One. Use the following guidelines when buying a modem for Sparklight.

  • Must use a DOCSIS 3.0 modem only with at least 8 download channels
  • Customers with voice services will need an EMTA unit noted below, purchased brand new only.
  • WiFi ONE subscribers can only use a leased modem from Cable ONE / Sparklight
  • Gigaone users will need a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem
  • Be sure to select a modem that is capable of providing for the speeds you are subscribed to. If you are not sure of your speed or tier, please see your bill or online account for more details.

Sparklight Cable Modems List

Below is a list of Sparklight cable modems that are compatible with Sparklight as noted per tier. Please note that while Sparklight has approved Wireless N modems, we do not suggest buying these and have been omitted here. Wireless AC is the latest standard and WiFi 6 (AX) is starting to roll out, making Wireless N very outdated. We have also omitted modems that have been known to cause issues, like those with the faulty Puma 6 Chipsets. Rest assured, these are the best of the best for Sparklight.

Tip: When buying new Sparklight cable modems bear in mind that used modems can be more of a hassle than it’s worth saving a few dollars. They can be tied to someone else’s account and you will not be able to get it activated on your account.

  • DOCSIS 4.0 Technology
    What Is DOCSIS 4.0?

Soon, and it probably won’t be long now, DOCSIS 4.0 will be rolling out. Comcast and other ISPs have already begun testing DOCSIS 4.0 advancements. It may seem crazy especially since DOCSIS 3.1, meant to deliver 10 Gbps, is still yet to gain a wider user base. But the time will come and it will sneak up on us, perhaps overnight.

The recommended Sparklight approved modems appear below. With several certified modems for Sparklight internet services, three categories (DOCSIS 3.1, WiFi, and value) have determined the top modem picks.

WiFi ONE service (an advanced WiFi solution) requires a leased modem from Sparklight.

Read the Cable Modem Buying Guide to help you choose a modem. Do not forget to purchase your modem accessories.

Internet providers have begun removing some DOCSIS 3.0 modems from their networks. To maximize the years of use from a modem, it is strongly recommended to purchase a DOCSIS 3.1 device (the latest standard).

Ultimate Buying Guide to Choose the Right Sparklight Compatible Modems in 2021

Before buying a modem, it is necessary to look at certain factors such as maximum speed allowed, download and upload speed, number of channels, etc. There are modems available in the market with modem and WiFi router combo. These models are much efficient than basic modems. With many numbers of Ethernet ports, these routers will serve best for wireless internet connections. From smartphones to laptops, you can connect several devices to the ports and make the best use of it. The Sparklight approved modems mentioned in this article are of efficient features. Make sure the modem you buy qualifies the below factors.

1. Internet speed

Internet connectivity is the basic purpose of buying a modem. Your modem must be capable enough to provide high-speed internet connectivity. Some modems are capable of supporting internet speed up to 1000 Mb per second. Your modem must support your internet plans. If your internet plan is large and your modem is not supportive of it, it is a waste of cost to afford a higher internet plan. So, make sure your modem is capable to support your internet plan.

For uninterrupted movie streaming, hardcore gaming, or intensive file downloading, the internet with maximum speed is essential. You can choose the modem and its internet speed according to your needs or uses. The speed of the modem must also coordinate with your internet service provider. You cannot expect the modem of 1000 Mbps speed to run efficiently when your ISP is poor or mediocre. To provide high speed, many numbers of channels are necessary for a modem. You can also overview the upload and download speed along with the speed supported.

2. ISP compatibility

The modem you purchase must be compatible with your internet service provider. When you purchase a modem, you can review the list of ISPs the modem supports. Each modem has a list of ISPs it supports and ISPs it doesn’t. You can go through the list or contact your internet service provider to know if the modem is compatible or not. Without basic research on this arena, buying a modem can become useless if it is not compatible.

You can check the modem website or simply Google to know if they support your internet service provider. Contacting the ISP is the most preferred option when compared to online research, as these websites sometimes may not be up-to-date to lead you in the right direction. You should have to provide your modem’s MAC address to the ISP to get info about its compatibility. You can view the MAC address either on its bottom or after plugging it through Ethernet.

3. DOCSIS protocols

You might have come across this term ‘DOCSIS’ commonly in the modem features list. Wondering what does a DOCSIS protocol refer to in modems? Modems of the latest models generally use DOCSIS 3.0 or DOCSIS 3.1 protocols. This feature is very important to consider while you buy a modem. DOCSIS is nothing but Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification. This protocol will allow your Internet service provider to provide you internet through the modem’s coaxial cable.

DOCSIS protocol means your modem can provide a broadband internet connection. The difference between DOCSIS 2.0 / 3.0 / 3.1 is just that they are different versions, with 3.1 being the most recent version. These versions decide the modem speed and number of channels it provides. For a modem with higher internet speed capability, a 3.1 DOCSIS version would be the best choice. The commonly used DOCSIS version for modems is the 3.0 version. It supports great internet speed and channel numbers.

4. Security features

Do not think security as the least important factor. Modems have high chances to be security threatened and being served with malicious websites. It is very easy to hack a modem than a router. The modem has great possibilities to be hacked by alien websites. You can keep your modem secured by affording efficient anti-virus programs. Though this is not the complete solution, you can do it for basic security purposes to keep your modem away from dangerous sites. You can also contact your internet service provider to keep you updated about the modem’s security. Most of the internet service providers are too lazy or least responsive in this matter. But, you can nudge them to keep you updated often about the security of the modem.

5. Upload and download speed

After checking the basic modem speed that it supports, it is important to check the upload and download speed of the modem. The upload speed of the modem is usually lesser than its downloading speed. If a modem specification states that it is capable of speed up to 600 Mbps, it means that it can download files and stream at that speed level. It will not be able to upload on that speed level. So, you cannot brush off just by looking at the basic speed.

You need to specifically look at the upload and download speed to know about them. For people who require much of uploading activities, prefer to buy modems with higher uploading speed. You can see this specification on the modem website or info provided. The upload speed will be either half or worse 1/4th of the downloading speed. Your internet plan must be higher to support higher uploading speed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Sparklight Compatible Modems in 2021

1. What is a DOCSIS protocol in modems? How does it influence modem performance?

DOCSIS is a Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification. DOCSIS protocol will let your Internet service provider provide you internet services through the modem’s coaxial cable. With this protocol, your modem can provide a broadband internet connection. There are different versions such as DOCSIS 2.0 / 3.0 / 3.1, with 3.1 being the most recent version and 3.0 is the most commonly used one.

2. How does Internet Service Provider ( ISP ) compatibility affect the modem function?

The modem you purchase must be compatible with your internet service provider. You can check the compatibility using 3 ways. You can either check it on the modem website or Google it or contact your internet provider to know about the compatibility. Contacting the ISP is the most trustworthy way of knowing about this.

3. What is the advantage of a modem + router combo?

The modem + WiFi router is very efficient compared to the basic modem. This is proven to be more advantageous as it will minimize the extra wires or cables needed for networking. This combo will also save space and is easy to set up. It will provide internet services to many devices at a time.

4. How to secure my modem from malicious websites?

You should keep your modem up-to-date with firmware updates. You should also change your login ID and password to be safe. You can disable the WPS option and avoid using unverified services. To secure your wireless devices connected to the modem/router, you can use WPA2. These steps will help to keep your modem away from malicious sites.

5. What are the additional features to look for when buying a modem?

Modems these days come with additional features such as parental control feature, which will be efficient for homes with children. You can take control over the modem and keep your children away from getting access to unwanted websites. There is also a separate guest networking feature in certain models to provide a separate network for your friends or guests to get access to the internet.

With the internet being the most vital necessity of everyday life, choosing the right modem is the best thing you can do to enrich your browsing experience. Look for all the above factors in the buyer’s guide before you make your purchase. Opting for a modem and router combo will be a smart choice for your uninterrupted networking.

Should You Buy or Rent Your Modem?

Best Sparklight Approved & Compatible Modems [Full List]

Here is a list of Sparklight approved modems (formerly Cable One) with an overview of the six best modems from that list.

Sparklight Approved Modems

As a Network Engineer, I have talked to Sparklight and researched to find which modem is best for Sparklight.

And I have concluded that the Netgear CM1000 is the best Sparklight compatible modem.

But not all Sparklight customers have the same internet speed, and therefore, what approved modem is best for you depends.

Thus, I have picked out the six best modems for different circumstances, so you can choose the one that fits you.

Keep reading to learn them.

Lists of Sparklight Compatible Modems

Here is a list of all Sparklight approved modems. That I made while researching for the best modems for Sparklight.

Puma Chipset is a problematic chip some modems have. I recommend avoiding any modem that has it. Yes means it has it, No means it doesn’t.

Speed is the fastest plan the modem is approved for. So 300, for example, means that the modem is approved for any internet plan up to 300 Mbps.

Top 6 Sparklight Approved Modems

Here are the 6 best Sparklight approved modems for different circumstances and internet plans.

What to Consider Before Buying A Modem For Sparklight

Here is what to specifically consider when buying a modem for Sparklight internet. For a more general guide, check out our modem buying guide here.

Requirement & Recommendations

The most important thing to make sure of before you buy a modem for Sparklight is that it will work with your internet.

Sparklight requires customers to use either a DOCSIS 3.0 or 3.1 modem for their internet. DOCSIS 2.0 modems will work for slower internet speeds but are being phased out.

For channel bonding, Sparklight requires varying amounts of channels for different internet plans. Below you can find the requirements. [1, 2]

Sparklight Internet PlanDOCSIS RequirementsChannel Requirements
Lite 15 Plus3.0 or 3.14×4, 8×4, 16×4, 24×8, 32×8
STARTER 100 PLUS3.0 or 3.18×4, 16×4, 24×8, 32×8
STREAMER & GAMER 200 PLUS3.0 or 3.116×4, 24×8, 32×8
TURBO 300 PLUS3.0 or 3.116×4, 24×8, 32×8
SUPER 600 PLUS3.0 or 3.124×8, 32×8
GIGAONE PLUS (940)3.0 or 3.132×8

You can always buy a better modem than necessary. But don’t buy a modem that is worse than the requirements.

DOCSIS & Channels – Modem Speed

Two factors decide the speed of a cable modem. These are the DOCSIS protocol and the channels.

When buying a compatible modem, you need to buy a modem that is at least as fast as your internet plan, preferably faster.

If you follow the requirements above, your modem will be fast enough for your plan.

But in many cases, you might want to get a faster modem than necessary. Especially if you think you might upgrade your internet plan in the coming future.

This starts the discussion about DOCSIS 3.0 and 3.1. And what version you should get. Because one option is future-proof while the other is just enough.

Here is a short overview.

The difference between them is that DOCIS 3.1 is about 10 times faster than 3.0. Having a max speed of around 10 000 Mbps. [3]

DOCSIS 3.0 will be enough for any Sparklight plan for now but won’t be in the future.

DOCSIS 3.1 costs slightly more but is a future-proof option.

For a more in-depth comparison, check out DOCSIS 3.1 vs. 3.0.

Modem/Router Combo Vs. Separate

Another thing you must decide when getting a compatible modem is if you want a modem/router combo (gateway) or a separate modem and router.

The difference is that a gateway is a modem and a router as one device, while separate has them as two.

Both options have pros and cons, but as a Network Engineer, I recommend separate devices.

This is because separate devices make it possible to change one device if it breaks or needs an upgrade rather than both. It also enables higher performance and more customization.

This is not to say that gateways are a poor option. They take up less space, have a cheaper upfront cost, and are often easier to set up.

Sparklight has plenty of both options on their approved modems list, so get what you prefer.

For a more in-depth overview of the pros and cons of each option, click here.

Sparklight Voice Service

If you have your Sparklight Voice Service, you have to lease a certified modem from them.

This gives you two options, either use the eMTA modem (the rented modem) for both internet and VoIP.

Or use the eMTA modem for your phone service and get an approved modem for your internet.

You can do this with a splitter that connects the phone line to the eMTA modem and the internet to the approved modem.

This will allow you to get a better modem for your internet than you otherwise would have.

But you will, however, still need to pay the renting fee for the eMTA modem every month.

You will also have to call Sparklight and explain what you are doing. Because they will have to rearrange things so it will work.

You might also want some help with the setup process, which you can get from their support.

Rent vs. Buy from Sparklight

Sparklight charges $10.50 every month to rent a modem from them. This adds up to $126 per year, more than enough to buy a Sparklight approved modem.

Thus, I recommend nearly everyone to buy a modem for themselves. Because it enables better performance for a cheaper cost.

The only reason you shouldn’t be buying an approved modem is if you are moving and/or changing ISP soon. Because then the modem you buy now might not work with the new ISP.

I should, however, note that I’m somewhat biased. I do make a small commission if you buy a modem.

If you want more information about the topic, check out rent vs. buy your modem.

Sparklight Internet

Sparklight has six internet plans. Here are they and what cable modem or gateway works well for each internet plan.

You can always get a better authorized modem or gateway than necessary but don’t get anything worse.

Sparklight Fiber

If you have Sparklight fiber internet, you don’t need a modem, only a router.

When picking a router, make sure it supports your plan, amount of devices you have, and your home size.

How to Setup a Sparklight Modem

To set up a Sparklight modem:

  1. Find a location with good airflow.
  2. Connect the coax cable and the power cord. Additionally, connect the router with an ethernet cable if you have separate devices.
  3. The rest is different for each modem. But follow the setup guide that comes with it. For more info, either click here or check out Sparklights Youtube video regarding setting up a modem.

My Verdict

From the list of Sparklight approved modems, I have concluded that the Netgear CM1000 is the best modem for most Sparklight customers.

This is because it provides a fast and reliable internet connection for a reasonable price.

What does "End of Life" mean for my modem?

A cable modem that is specified as "End of Life" was once a recommended Sparklight cable modem. Due to the discontinued production, manufacturer support changes, or other technical issues, these cable modems are no longer recommended or allowed to be registered on our network. At present, active accounts that use these modems will continue to operate normally on our network and are permitted. However, if the account is disconnected and the modem has become unregistered from the account, you will need to upgrade to one of our approved modems listed above. Currently, no dates have been specified to fully retire the DOCSIS 2.0 modems from our network.

If you lease a modem from Sparklight, you don't need to do anything at this time. You will be contacted by a representative from our local Sparklight office soon. Until then, please continue to enjoy your high-speed Internet access provided by Sparklight!

If you have purchased your own modem, we suggest that you replace the cable modem with an approved Sparklight modem in the near future to avoid any service disruption or connectivity issues.

Can I purchase my own modem?

If you choose to purchase a modem, Sparklight recommends you purchase a new modem with DOCSIS 3.1 capability from a reputable source, and select one that is listed on our approved modems list above. Although a DOCSIS 3.0 modem will currently work on our network, it does not use the latest technology, which can affect your connectivity and internet speeds. Should you wish to purchase a modem that is not on our approved modems list, please contact our team prior to making your purchase to verify compatibility.  Second-hand modems may not work properly on Sparklight's network even if listed above. Sparklight reserves the right to refuse service to any modem or modem model that might impair network performance. See the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) for details.

Why can’t I purchase a secondhand modem or use a modem that was given to me?

Second-hand modems may not work properly on Sparklight's network for a number of reasons. This is why we do not recommend purchasing or using a secondhand modem. The following is a list of possible reasons why the secondhand modem may not work properly:

  • The modem is using older DOCSIS technology that no longer works with our network.
  • The modem may be broken or nonoperational. There is no way to test this until after you purchase the modem and have tried to activate it. Just because the light comes on when you plug the modem in does not mean it is fully operational.
  • There may be a defect in the equipment that can only be identified when the modem is online and configured.
  • The modem may be stolen or belongs to another Internet Service Provider
  • In most cases, you are unable to return a used modem if it does not work.
  • The ports on the modem may not be operational.

For our customers in Longview, TX;
Your Sparklight Fiber Internet service will be using a device known as an ONU instead of modems. We provide a complimentary ONU to support your fiber service and do not currently support customer-owned ONU’s.

We offer and support WiFi ONE service for $10.50 per month. These systems will maximize your wireless experience. However, if you prefer to obtain a router, please select a setup capable of delivering the speed and providing the coverage needed for your home.

Note: We are unable to use combo modem/routers in place of a traditional router-only device.

GigaONE Supported Modems - Residential Only

Sparklight strives to produce a high level of reliability, stability, and security for our High-Speed Internet Subscribers. As such, we continually evaluate cable modems on our network for compatibility and performance. The following is a current list of cable modems that have been certified to work on the Sparklight GigaONE high speed internet network.

Sparklight GigaONE requires customers to use a DOCSIS 3.x Cable Modem (DOCSIS = Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification). These modems incorporate the latest cable technology, can deliver faster Internet speeds, and have a longer expected operational lifetime. Existing customers with older modems using DOCSIS 2 technology will still be able to utilize some Sparklight High-Speed Internet packages but will not be able to utilize the faster High-Speed Internet speed packages without upgrading to a DOCSIS 3 or DOCSIS 3.1 modem.
