German automaker Audi is known for its zippy yet luxurious rides, offering its popular small A4 for more than 20 years. With a reputation for reliability and owner satisfaction, it’s no surprise the A4 remains one of Audi’s flagship vehicles. But as it turns out, the most common issues owners have about their A4 may prove otherwise (and cost owners a pretty penny). Is the Audi A4 as reliable and luxurious as it appears?

The most common problems owners have with their Audi A4: what’s up with the engine?

CarComplaints.com tallied complaints from all model years to find the three worst overall. Using factors like repair cost, average mileage, and more, the worst-ranked problems were selected for the model. Each of the top three worst-ranked problems falls into one category: the engine.

Excessive oil usage: The worst-ranked problem by Car Complaints for all Audi A4 model years is excessive oil usage, which is a complaint that seems to appear in every model year. In fact, it is the most commonly-reported problem across all years. Though most model years have complaints of excessive oil usage or burning oil, the problem appears worst in the 2011 Audi A4. According to Car Complaints, this problem happens around 64,000 miles and costs owners an average of $6,000 to repair, earning a severity rating of 8.0 (out of 10).

Engine failure: Though the 2002 Audi A4 has fewer complaints than many other model years, it is where Car Complaints’ second-worst-rated problem exists. The only reason engine failure is not the top-rated problem is because fewer owners seem to experience this, but engine failure earns Car Complaints’ severity rating of 10.0, the worst rating possible, with an average repair cost of $6,500 and average mileage of around 66,000 miles.

Bad piston: This complaint isn’t as common, but is extremely costly. While only two out of nine owners of the 2012 Audi A4 report experiencing a bad engine piston, the problem earns Car Complaints’ severity rating of 10.0. This problem occurs at a low average mileage of around 48,000 miles and costs around $8,500 to fix.

The worst-ranked category across all model years is engine problems, receiving more complaints than any other category. In fact, the vast majority of complaints about all Audi A4s fall within this category. For example, 25 out of 33 total 2009 A4 complaints fall into the engine category, and 19 out of 22 complaints for the 2011 model year do. Not just common for owners but also expensive, the most common engine problem costs an average of $7,000 to fix and happens at an average of fewer than 59,000 miles.

According to the model year comparison on CarComplaints.com, the 2009 Audi A4 has more complaints than any other model year, with 33 total. While that’s an obvious model year to steer clear from, Car Complaints actually rates the 2011 A4, with 22 complaints, as the “Worst Model Year” all “because of other possible factors such as higher repair cost or more problems at lower mileage.” This should come as no surprise as the 2011 model year comes with Car Complaints’ top worst-rated problem.

Is the Audi A4 unreliable?

While the problems some owners are experiencing are severe, the Audi A4 still has an impressively-low number of owner-reported complaints. Out of model years 1996-2020, the majority have fewer than 20. Overall, the Audi A4 proves to be a generally reliable vehicle. In fact, out of every new luxury compact car tested by Consumer Reports, the 2020 Audi A4 is ranked overall as the best, with an impressive score of 88 (out of 100) and a perfect predicted reliability rating of five (out of five).

2017 Audi A4 B9 Quattro Blacked out - after 3 years of ownership review

Audi has a reputation for making some of the most fuel-efficient and reliable cars on the luxury market. One of its most dependable models is the Audi A4 sedan, which consistently gets high marks from Consumer Reports. If you’ve ever wanted to experience an Audi for yourself, several of its used models are very affordable right now.

U.S. News says that the best used Audi to buy right now is the 2018 Audi A4. The car was originally over $36,000, but some drivers paid as little as $30,000 for a lightly used one. Is the 2018 Audi A4 worth your money?

    New features for 2018

The Audi A4 got a full redesign for the 2017 model year, so it has plenty of nice upgrades. The previous generation only had one engine option – a supercharged V6 capable of 333 hp. 2017 introduced two new engines, both of which are paired with a new seven-speed automatic transmission. It also comes standard with settings for four drive modes.

For 2018, a new engine was added to complement the high-powered S4 trim. It’s a turbo-V6 that makes 354 hp, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It also comes with standard all-wheel drive and every available technology upgrade.

The 2016 Audi A4 was panned by critics for its lack of standard technology, but that changed with the redesign. The 2018 Audi A4 comes standard with smartphone integration, a few USB ports, and a larger touchscreen. The infotainment interface itself is also more advanced and has swift response times.

Higher trims also received a premium audio system, a massive 12-inch touchscreen, and built-in navigation. Certain trims of the Audi A4 also got plenty of new safety features, like rear-collision detection and traffic sign recognition. Leather seats with heating were also made standard for this model year.

Why the Audi A4 surpasses its siblings

The 2018 Audi A4 beat many other Audi cars, including two models from later years. The 2019 Audi Q3 has a more powerful base engine plus standard all-wheel drive. However, it has terrible gas mileage compared to the A4 sedan and it’s slightly more expensive.

The 2019 Audi Q5 is more expensive than both the A4 and Q3, with higher used trims still costing over $50,000. It has the standard Audi trademarks of powerful engines and an array of fancy technology. Still, it doesn’t have as much cargo space as other luxury compact SUVs. While it’s not on U.S. News’s list, the Audi A4 Allroad wagon actually has more cargo space than both of these SUVs.

More about the 2018 Audi A4

RELATED: Which Audi Is the Most Reliable?

The Audi A4 has a large 13-inch trunk, plus a split-folding rear seat. The rest of the interior is also up to par with luxury standards, with many soft-touch surfaces and finely-crafted control knobs. Legroom is generous for front-seat riders, but things are predictably more narrow in the back row. Still, every seat is supportive enough to keep everyone comfortable on long trips.

The 2018 A4 is very athletic on twisty roads, and hard jolts are muted by the suspension. The cabin is well insulated on the highway and the brake pedal has a solid feel. Consumer Reports says that it has good steering feedback, though not on the level of other sports cars.

CR also criticized the learning curve of both the infotainment system and the gear shifter. Some of the internet-based technology is difficult to use and the gear selector is too finicky. U.S. News also warns that the Audi A4 has higher insurance rates than a typical luxury sedan. Still, all things considered, the 2018 Audi A4 is definitely a good value at its lowered price.

At least today, while Lech has not become a hindrance for the two of us. I myself very much hoped that it would soon turn out to be so, but so far all three of them felt.
