2021 GasGas Motorcycles First Look

Since KTM’s purchase of GasGas in September 2019, the Austrian manufacturer has transplanted some of its teams and riders from orange bikes to GasGas machinery, most notably what is now known as the Standing Construct GasGas Factory Racing team and its MXGP class riders Glenn Coldenhoff and Ivo Monticelli. Other riders who have been moved from orange to red include Red Bull KTM Factory Racing pilot Taddy Blazusiak, who became the main rider on the enduro side of the GasGas brand. The bikes they competed on inevitably gave us an idea of what the production bikes might look like. Recently, GasGas announced its full lineup of 2021 motorcycles including the full-size motocross, cross-country, enduro, and trials bikes, as well as youth motocross bikes.

Unsurprisingly, GasGas is going to campaign its new models in a variety of different racing disciplines here in the United States. Under the guidance of 10-time AMA National Trials champion Geoff Aaron, who serves as GasGas North America’s Off-Road Race Team manager, the brand will continue with its factory trials team and will also work with the GasGas Coastal Factory Racing Team and their team manager Barry Hawk as they prepare to contest the Grand National Cross-Country (GNCC) and Kenda AMA National Enduro series in 2021.

Also, Troy Lee’s Supercross and motocross team will be switching from KTM to GasGas for 2021, and with that, the organization’s name will now be Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/GasGas Factory Racing. The team will continue to contest the Monster Energy AMA Supercross series and Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship in the 250cc division and will also be adding a 450 rider, who is widely rumored to be Justin Barcia.

Back on the subject of GasGas' new motorcycles, we have included photos of all of the brand’s bikes in its 2021 lineup in this article to provide a first look at them and will publish a more in-depth story to once we’ve scrutinized the differences between these models and their KTM and Husqvarna counterparts. Stay tuned for that story, but in the meantime, feast your eyes upon GasGas' first-ever production motocross bikes as well as its full lineup of off-road and trials motorcycles.

2021 GASGAS Models – Component Spec & Pricing

A year ago, shortly after KTM Industries AG (which is now called Pierer Mobility AG) announced that it had struck a deal with the owners of GASGAS Motorcycles, we posted an article about the yet-to-be produced Austrian-made GASGAS machines. Called “2021 GASGAS Models: A GuessGuess”, that piece took an educated guess at what the new-look GASGAS machines would look like, based on the information KTM had revealed about how this “third brand” would be pitched as a fun and approachable launch pad into the performance off-road motorcycle world”, and other scant information about the bikes’ component spec that’d allow the KTM Group to sell the things cheaper than their KTM and Husky counterparts.

Funnily enough, we were pretty close to the mark with our guesswork. But now that we’ve seen the bikes in the flesh and ridden them at GASGAS’s recent Australian media launch, we can offer a more detailed insight into how the component spec differs between GASGAS and KTM, and the price differentials between the two brands for 2021.

As you’ll see from the pricing table below, the 2021 GASGAS enduro models are between $900 and $1100 cheaper than their KTM equivalents, while Gasser’s MX models are between $100 and $800 cheaper, depending on the model. Compared with their Husqvarna equivalents, the 2021 GASGAS enduro models are between $1500 and $1700 cheaper, while the Gassers’ MX models are between $300 and $1000 cheaper, depending on the model.

But let’s take a closer look at how the componentry differs between the 2021 GASGAS machines and their KTM counterparts – for both MX and enduro models – bearing in mind that all GASGAS models share KTM’s major engine, chassis and suspension components.

THE MX MODELS…

  • The bodywork – all plastic panels use a distinctively different shape and colour, and get unique graphics.
  • Fuel tank – small differences to accommodate the different radiator shrouds.
  • Wheels – GASGAS uses lower-spec Excel rims, and they’re silver (not black).
  • Tyres – Maxxis hoops, as opposed to the Dunlop rubber that comes on the KTM MXers.
  • Neken handlebars – they’re a lower bend than what’s used on the Katos.
  • Triple clamps – they’re cast, unlike the black-anodised billet clamps found on the KTMs.
  • Exhaust – there’s no resonating chamber on the header pipe.
  • No map-selector switch.
  • Connectivity Unit compatibility is still TBA.

Interestingly, GASGAS’s MX models use a Husqvarna swingarm, mated with a KTM rising-rate linkage. The seat is a KTM unit, albeit with a different-textured red seat cover.

THE ENDURO MODELS…

  • The bodywork – all plastic panels use a distinctively different shape and colour, and get unique graphics.
  • Fuel tank – small differences to accommodate the different radiator shrouds.
  • Wheels – GASGAS uses lower-spec Excel rims, and they’re silver (not black).
  • Hydraulics – GASGAS uses Braktec brakes (front and rear) and clutch, as opposed to the Brembo hydraulics found on the KTMs (and Magura hydraulics on Husky enduro models).
  • Shock linkage – GASGAS runs a rising-rate linkage (off KTM’s MX models), as opposed to the no-linkage PDS design used on KTM’s enduro models.
  • Tyres – the Maxxis hoops on the Gassers are slightly different to the Maxxis hoops that come on the KTMs
  • Neken handlebars – they’re a lower bend than what’s used on the Katos.
  • No tool-free fork cap preload adjuster.
  • No hand guards as standard equipment.

As with the MX bikes, GASGAS’s enduro models run a Husqvarna swingarm, mated with a KTM rising-rate linkage (MX-spec). Again, the seat is a KTM unit, albeit with a different-textured red seat cover.

2021 GasGas Models: A GuessGuess

What exactly will the 2021-model (KTM-owned) GasGas production bikes look like? Which components will they run? Should we expect them to simply be rebadged KTMs or Husqvarnas, or an amalgamation of the two? Or will there be genuine ‘divergence’ from the two brands they’ll share a design platform with?

All very good questions. But when we recently posed them to key personnel at GasGas – both in Austria and Australia – the replies we finally received were pretty short on detail, and sounded like they’d been heavily redacted.

What we did learn from that GasGas Q&A is that:

  • KTM appear intent on pitching GasGas – their “third brand” – as “a fun and approachable launch pad into the performance off-road motorcycle world”;
  • The new GasGas models will “share their engine platform with the KTM group’s other brands”;
  • GasGas will offer an “entry-level off-road platform at a lower price point than KTM”, achieved via a different specification; and
  • These all-new GasGas models are expected to launch in Australia “by the end of the year”.

So, based on those parameters – and integrating the feedback and comments you’ve offered on our social media channels – we figured we’d have a stab at the component make-up of these new-generation 2021 GasGas machines*. ‪Here’s our educated guess at what they’ll run, and the rationale behind it:

WHAT: Distinctive Plastics & Graphics
WHY: Because it’s a no-brainer. The quickest, easiest and most cost-effective way to differentiate a motorcycle is new plastics, even if it’s only skin-deep.

WHAT: Cross-Country Chromoly Frame
WHY: KTM owns WP, who produces all the chromoly frames (in addition to suspension, exhausts and radiators) used for KTM and Husqvarna models. We can’t imagine the Gassers’ frames would be much different from the near identical frames used by its sisters’ brands, though it’s likely that GasGas’s enduro models will get the cross-country frame (rather than the slightly more compliant enduro version) because its design would immediately accommodate the linkage-type shock absorber and alloy subframe – both of which we expect the Gassers to come with (see below).

‪WHAT: Rising-Rate Shock Linkage
WHY: Because the link-less PDS (Progressive Damping System) shock is synonymous with, and exclusive to, KTM’s off-road range. Also, linkages are more widely accepted and embraced than the opinion-polarising PDS set-up, especially in the mass American market. So, just like the Husqvarnas, we’d expect Gassers’ enduro and MX models to run a linkage.

WHAT: Aluminium Subframe
WHY: Because the alloy subframe is cheaper to produce than Husqvarna’s carbon-reinforced plastic work of art, and available in larger numbers (as KTM’s production runs are much bigger than those for their Husky counterparts). That, and the fact the Polyamide subframe is exclusive to Husqvarna (well, Husaberg too, but let’s stay with the present), and they’ve experienced a few breakages on Husky’s 2020 FE and TE models.

‪WHAT: Cast Triple Clamps
WHY: Because, with the enduro models, black-anodised billet clamps are exclusive to Husqvarna. It’s one of a few key components that help Husqvarna justify a price premium over their KTM counterparts.

‪WHAT: WP Fork & Shock
WHY: Economies of scale. And cos it’s kind of obvious because, as is the case with the frame, KTM’s ownership of WP will dictate a change from KYB to WP suspension components for Gasser. With the widespread bad-mouthing of WP’s 4CS 48mm fork since it was discontinued in 2017 and 2018 for KTM/Husky’s enduro and MX models, respectively, we can’t imagine that it’ll be resurrected for the 2021 Gassers – despite the fact it could save on production costs. In other words, Gasser’s enduro models will likely get an Xplor fork, while the MXers will get the Xact air-sprung fork.

‪‪WHAT: Magura Brakes & Clutch
WHY: Because the brand is looking to grow their off-road motorcycle market share, and is likely to cheaper to purchase than the Brembo units used by KTM’s models.

‪‪WHAT: Different Wheelsets
WHY: The Giant rims on the KTMs and DID rims on the Husqvarna have both proved bulletproof; perhaps even over-engineered. Which means GasGas could use a cheaper wheelset to save costs without a noticeable impact – for a majority of riders, anyway – on durability.

‪‪WHAT: No Extras
WHY: There’s no way that GasGas could or would offer things such as fork spring preload adjusters, billet triple clamps, bar-mounted dual-map selector switch or traction control as standard equipment, and still be priced below their KTM and Husky counterparts (we’re hearing that the 2021 GasGas machines will be 5% cheaper than their soon-to-be parity-priced equivalents in the KTM and Husqvarna ranges).

By the way, don’t count out a detuned two-stroke GasGas enduro models with a lower seat height and cheaper suspension components. Based on the recent sales success of Beta’s X-Trainer 300 and (the former) Gasser’s ECRanger 200/300, a cheaper, non-intimidating, ‘stepping-stone’ model of this ilk would have to be firmly in GasGas’s sights.

*Just to be clear, this article’s image of a mythical, yet-to-be-produced 2021 GasGas was merely an artist’s impression. It was designed to be humorous and thought provoking. We’re not implying that the new-look Gassers will merely be a cobbled-together, Frankenstein-type collection of KTM and Husky components.

GASGAS 2021 ENDURO AND MX MODELS
First look at the 2021 GASGAS “EX” Cross-Country motorcycle range which includes four new models ready to stand alongside the Off-Road “EC” range.

They’ve been a long time coming but finally the details behind the new generation of Austrian built GASGAS off-road models have landed. In terms of off-road, the range splits models into Cross-Country and Enduro as well as motocross and trials.

As expected, the new off-road line-up is based on the Austrian manufacturer’s highly developed platform as seen under KTM and Husqvarna motorcycles but, as we learned today during the official online presentation and press information, there’s a mixture of KTM and Husqvarna in here which will mark the new red models out.

Four model “EX” Cross-Country range

Traditionally we know that KTM’s model range includes a little bit of something for everyone with a two and four-stroke line-up big enough to fill a container. The new GASGAS range, perhaps partly due to the current global climate or just because the Austrian manufacturer is honing-in on what matters, has narrowed down that broad range of bikes to just four of each off-road model.

ex-450-f-front-ri_my2021

In the red corner of the showroom you will not find a 125, 150 or 500cc model. Instead the new GASGAS range is eight models wide with “EX” (Cross-Country) and EC (Enduro): EX 250 F, EX 350 F and EX 450 F four-strokes and EX 300 two-stroke. The “EC” enduro range includes 250 and 300 two-strokes with the fuel-injected TPI engines, plus the EC 250 F and EC 350 F four-strokes.

More on those here First look: 2021 GASGAS Enduro models revealed

To put it simply it shows the KTM Group have moved away from a broad range of bikes and focused on the ones which they know are most popular with customers – the biggest selling bikes being the 300 two-stroke and 350 four-stroke.

Looking at the details

ec-300-stripped-90de-ri_my2021-copy

The common ground across the different brands is the engine and chassis ‘platform’ and it is safe to say there is nothing new here, just very highly developed and well-proven components.

The new red powder-coated frames are the laser cut Chromoly tailored for the different two and four-stroke models with the aluminium, not composite subframe. The latest generation Husqvarna models (MY2020) have improved handling with the linkage system and it is good to see it here on the red bikes.

The hollow cast aluminium swingarm is familiar as is the 22mm offset, forged triple clamps with three-way handlebar adjusters. Neken handlebars, grips and throttle assembly are equally familiar parts on the Austrian-built machines.

Where the Cross-Country and Enduro models stand differently is in their WP suspension. The EX bikes run 48mm XACT air (AER) forks run with clicker dials fitted as standard for quick adjustment. The XACT shock absorber is also adjustable for rebound plus high and low-speed compression and has 300mm of travel.

Brembo brakes

Another change between Cross-Country and Enduro line-ups is the hydraulic brakes and clutch systems – the EX models run Brembo where Braktec supply the EC machines. The front brake has an 11mm piston inside the master cylinder and twin 25mm pistons in the caliper biting a 260mm waved front disc. The rear brake has a 12.7mm master cylinder piston and a single 25mm piston caliper on a 220mm disc. The KTM-developed Damped Diaphragm Steel (DDS) clutch uses the Brembo hydraulic system.

Wheels and tyres

The new GG models will arrive with CNC-machined hubs, silver alloy wheels with aluminium spoke nipples (spoke material is not revealed as yet) from an undisclosed wheel manufacturer. The already well-formed parts catalogue includes wheel upgrades.

Fresh bodywork

ex-300-rear-le_my2021

The new bodywork was already revealed earlier during 2020 when race bikes were launched in MXGP and more recently when Taddy Blazusiak’s bike images were published. The simple side panels across the tank and radiators meet big, white side number boards and a white rear fender. The enduro and off-road models are distinguished from the motocross GASGAS bikes by those white panels (MX bikes are all red).

There’s a simplicity about it which we think hints at GG models of old, particularly with the front fender shape, but still brings a fresh look to the new bikes.

Tool-less air filter access

The GASGAS bikes maintain the latest generation tool-less air filter access through the side panel. It’s a simple system we have got used to which makes filter changes quick and easy.

The transparent fuel tanks will hold 8.5 litres (1.8 gals or 2.25 US gals) as standard and feature the relatively quick access fuel cap, “specific routing” of the fuel line and a fuel level sensor.

Common engines

Besides the already developed and updated power plants (for MY20 KTM and Husqvarna models), each bike features a six-speed Pankl transmission, Keihin electronic management systems (EMS) tailoring power to each gear and the fuel-injected or Transfer Port Injection (TPI), counter-balanced two-stroke engine featured in the EX 300 model.

The two-stroke and four-stroke Cross Country engines use 39mm and 44mm Keihin throttle bodies while the EX 300 uses a 39mm throttle body.

The electric start system on all models is fired up by a lithium Ion battery. The models will not arrive with a fan as standard so expect that to be an option from the new GASGAS parts range. Exhaust systems meanwhile look very familiar from the KTM models of 2020 and on the 4T models has the two-part, hydro-formed header pipe.

Technical accessories

The 2021 GASGAS range will naturally arrive with a whole heap of upgrade parts available. That includes full Akrapovic exhaust systems, the FMF ‘Megabomb’ header, slip-on Akrapovic muffler, off-set adjustable triple clamps (just like Taddy Blazusiak’s), Hinson outer clutch cover, handguards, D.I.D. stronger wheel sets, preload adjusters and more including the clothing and apparel range.

After months of speculation and anticipation, the full model range from motorcycle manufacturer GASGAS is here. Acquired by the parent company of KTM and Husqvarna, the iconic European brand will use 2021 as its official launch into new segments of off-road motorcycling, including motocross (they will field a full SX-MX team in 2021 with the already established Troy Lee Designs operation, aptly titled Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/GASGAS Factory Racing, and will line up for GNCC and National Enduro Series with the Coastal GASGAS Factory Racing crew).

Yes, there are lots of similarities through the red, orange, and white bikes, but there are some key differences from GASGAS, including a more condensed motocross range and a continuation of trials, a legacy discipline for the brand.

All bikes are slated to land at dealerships in Fall 2020.

The MC 450F cylinder head is compact, lightweight and benefits from a short profile that locates the single camshaft as close to the center of gravity as possible to significantly improve the handling. With lightweight 40 mm intake and 33 mm exhaust valves activated by rocker arms that are coated in a low-friction Diamond Like Coating (DLC), the SOHC cylinder head provides both torque and precise throttle response.

Benefitting from long service intervals of 100 hours (who doesn’t like those?), a plain big end bearing comprising of two force-fitted bearing shells ensures maximum reliability and durability.

Our high-pressure die cast production process guarantees two things – reliability while keeping overall crankcase weight down. Designed so that the internal moving shafts and parts are carefully positioned, they ensure the best possible handling.

The Dampened Diaphragm Steel (DDS) clutch and Pankl 5-speed transmission give riders precise control of the awesome MC 450F. Using a single diaphragm steel pressure plate instead of traditional coil springs, together with a damping system the clutch delivers better traction and durability.

Lightweight chromium molybdenum steel, hydro-formed, laser-cut and robot-welded frames ensure riders enjoy playful handling and an energetic feeling on any motocross track.

With a short and compact profile, all GASGAS motocross subframes are made from lightweight aluminum. The profile helps centralize mass while also keeping weight down.

Light, strong and featuring clearly visible chain adjustment marks to make life at the track easier, our motocross swingarms are made using a gravity die-cast process to guarantee durability and precision.

Advanced, super-lightweight 48 mm WP XACT forks are easily adjustable and deliver progressive and consistent damping no matter how rough the track. They feature a capsulated air spring and pressurized oil chamber together with other internal damping wizardry.

Featuring a 3-way handlebar adjustment that allows riders to set-up the front-end of their bikes just the way they like it, the forged, 22 mm offset triple clamps work in harmony with the WP front forks to deliver precise handling and stability.

Traction is what it’s all about and the fully adjustable WP XACT rear shock provides the advanced damping that inspires confidence and ignites fun. Designed to work harmoniously with both frame and swingarm to offer incredible energy absorption, the shock is also matched to a linkage system with a specific geometry that further aids traction.

Hold on, it’s important! Neken tapered handlebars guarantee comfort and control thanks to optimal pressure points on rider’s hands.

ODI grips don’t require gluing thanks to a lock-on left and vulcanized right grip that features an innovative integrated throttle mechanism with selectable cams to change throttle progression.

We like to keep our fuel tanks simple and robust, that’s why we opted for a threaded filler cap that provides a tight and reliable seal.

Less time working on bikes means more time riding bikes, which is exactly why you’ll love the straightforward, no tools needed filter mounting system on all GASGAS motocross bikes.

While there’s near maintenance-free operation with no need for adjustment, the best thing about the Brembo hydraulic clutch is that it delivers a perfectly smooth action time and time again.

Fast is fun but slowing down is essential, which is why all GASGAS motocross bikes are fitted with Brembo calipers and controls. With 260 mm front and 220 mm (solid) rear discs, braking is easy, inspiring riders to push harder and ride faster.

No matter how heavy the landing or how rough the track, the silver, high-strength rims, CNC machined hubs and lightweight spokes deliver maximum strength for complete peace of mind.

GASGAS EX 300

MSRP: $9,599 USD

Playful. Energetic. Lightweight. Agile. The EX 300 is our do-it-all 2-stroke cross-country bike that delivers enjoyment and reliability while keeping maintenance costs low. A super-easy bike to use, and start, with no need for premixing fuel or tedious jetting changes, the innovative electronic fuel injection system allows for true ‘gas-and-go’ riding simplicity. With significantly reduced emissions and extended fuel range, there’s so much to like about the EX 300.

Highlights

Red. Very red and finished with white! Enabling rider and bike to feel as one when darting in and out of trees, the vibrant bodywork on all GASAGAS cross-country bikes is also a visual expression of our Spanish personality. Considered ergonomics allow unrestricted movement while our flat, high-grip seat profile delivers comfort and control in all conditions.

The EX 300 cylinder is super-efficient and features two inlet positions on the transfer ports at the rear of the cylinder. Here, two fuel injectors deliver fuel downwards into the transfer port guaranteeing perfect atomization before the air then travels upward to the combustion chamber.

There’s no need for pre-mixing fuel with the EX 300! Instead the bike features an electronic oil pump that feeds 2-stroke oil into the motor, keeping it lubricated via the throttle body. Using engine speed and throttle position sensor data, the engine management’s precise electronic control of the oil pump ensures the perfect amount of oil for any given conditions, reducing exhaust smoke by up to 50% compared with conventional pre-mix lubrication. The advanced lubrication system maintains an average fuel-to-oil ratio of 1:80, which means one tank full of oil is enough for at least five tanks of fuel!
