EASY Crepe Paper Sunflower FREE SVG+TEMPLATE

In this post, I’m sharing a step-by-step tutorial on how to make your own crepe paper sunflower. This is a super easy beginner-friendly sunflower craft with FREE SVG cut file for Cricut. And if you don’t have a Cricut, you can cut this out by hand as well using the FREE printable paper sunflower template. Let’s begin!

Hey, Cricut buddy, welcome to Cut N Make Crafts (not affiliate with official Cricut)! If you are looking for a free crepe paper sunflower tutorial along with an SVG cut file and a template, you have come to the right place, because today I’m sharing a complete step by step tutorial on how YOU can create these paper flowers yourself. Let’s begin!

crepe paper sunflower

Personally, I’m a huge fan of crepe paper flowers. They give a very realistic look to the flowers especially if you add some shade to them using Pan Pastels. Oh, this reminds me, I purchased some Pan Pastels ages ago to create a paper flower tutorial before I got busy with launching the SVG SUPERSTAR course. Working on this post, just reminded me of their presence in my drawer. Let’s hope I get some free time so I can work on a tutorial for the flowers. LOL!

Supplies needed for rose paper flower bouquet

Making these crepe paper sunflowers is extremely easy as all you need for this sunflower project is yellow and brown crepe paper, your Cricut, and some glue. These crepe paper sunflowers have flat bottoms so you can make these sunflowers to use them for wreaths or in a sunflower shadow box. Here’s a complete list of supplies needed to make these crepe paper sunflowers.

  7. Click on upload.
  8. Locate the file on your computer and upload it to Cricut Design Space.
  9. Insert the file on the canvas and click on “Make it”.
  10. Place each crepe paper on the respective mat and cut it out.
  11. Cut out the template for the brown crepe paper on cardstock then fold the brown crepe paper thrice, place the template on top and cut out the brown crepe paper.

Take any one of the petal cutouts and cut a 1 cm slit along the bottom side of the petal. Apply glue on either side of the slit.

Overlap both sides of the slits over the glued part. This will give the petal a 3d look. One by one prepare the rest of the petals in the same way.

Place the round paper on a flat surface; grab the petals and the glue for the next step.

Attach 8 petals on the round paper, making sure to keep an even gap between every 2 petals. These 8 petals form the outer layer of the crepe paper sunflower.

Now grab the other 8 petals and attach them on the round piece, inside the outer layer. This time, keep the petals of this layer between every 2 petals of the previous layer.

Take the brown strip, fold it into half and cut small and even fringes along the closed end of the strip. Start rolling the strip along its intact side.

Roll the entire strip and glue the end of the roll to secure it.

Attach the fringed roll piece on the center of the sunflower petals. Attach some leaves on the bottom side of the sunflower. And you’re done! Wohoo!

Looking for some FREE sunflower SVG for your cutting machine crafts and projects?

You’re in the right place! I’m sharing a bunch of free sunflower SVG files with you today!

If you have a cricut, silhouette, or any other cutting machine, you know how awesome it is when you find free SVG files!

So today, I’m sharing my favorite and free sunflower SVG files for you to download and use in your projects.

These free files can be used in so many ways! At the end of this post, I share some of my favorite ideas for using these files…

sunflower svg free

First, though, let’s talk about SVG files and what they are.

An SVG file, which stands for scalable vector graphic file, is a standard graphics file type used for rendering two-dimensional images.

SVG files generate clean graphics at any scale.

Just as important, they’re also SEO-optimized, usually smaller than other formats, and capable of dynamic animations.

SVG files are great for so many applications, such as logos and cutting machines (which I imagine is why most of you are here today).

I’ve shared some free Christmas SVG and Bow SVG in the past, and at the end of this post I’ll share some ideas on how to use these free SVG files.

There are so many programs out there that will open SVG files.

Since most of you will be opening SVG files for your cutting machines (I’m assuming), we’ll put our focus there.

SVG files usually come in a zipped folder and need to be extracted before you can use the files.

Once you download a file, you’ll need to unzip it before you can import it into your software program of choice.

To unzip your SVG file, double-click the folder and choose “extract all”.

You’ll be asked where you want your files to go. I often choose either my desktop or a folder on my computer (you can label a folder “SVG files” for easy retrieval).

Just remember where you extract your files as you’ll need to find them again.

Once you are in your design space (probably either Cricut Design Space or Silhouette Studio), you’ll upload your file and begin your project.

Before you begin, check out our pics for the best vinyl for Cricut and other cutting machines so that your project turns out as perfect as possible.

Ok, now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about some of the best free sunflower SVG files!

So of course I decided to make some giant paper sunflowers for fall. And you guys, I love them so much. I have been so excited to share this post with you so you can make some giant paper sunflowers too. You need them in your life! They’re just so happy and fun and fall-ish.

You can download the free files at the bottom of this post. I’ve included SVG cut files for your Silhouette or Cricut machine and printable patterns you can use to cut the flowers out by hand if you don’t have a machine.

how to make cardstock flowers

Materials Needed

  • Yellow and Brown Cardstock (bought this pack from Michaels on sale for $3)
  • Glue Gun + Glue Sticks
  • Silhouette Cameo OR Printable Patterns + Scissors

Instructions for Making Paper Flowers With A Cutting Machine

Step 1: Download the paper flower SVG cut files below and import them into Silhouette Design Studio.

Step 2: Ungroup the designs and arrange them to fit on your paper. Just move the extra petals off the cutting mat when it’s not their turn to be cut.

Step 3: Adjust the cut settings for cardstock and send petals to be cut. Repeat until all of the shapes are cut. The large circle is the base you’ll glue all the petals to and the brown scalloped pieces are the sunflower center.

*** You’ll need at least 8 petals of each size. Note that there are two slightly different shaped petals in each size. This is just to make the flower look more realistic. You only need 8 petals total of each size (so 4 each of the two shapes that are the same size.) ***

cutting flower petals in silhouette studio

Step 4: Curl the petals very slightly so they look more natural.

Step 5: Fold the bottom slit on top of itself and glue it into place. This is what gives the sunflowers their 3D shape.

giant paper sunflower free templateStep 6: Use hot glue to attach the large petals to the outer edge of the paper circle. Attach the medium petals, then the small petals the same way. Fold up the edges of the scalloped circles, then stack them together from large to small and glue together to form the flower center.

Instructions for Making Paper Flowers By Hand

Step 1: Download the free template and print it onto regular copy paper. Cut out the shapes. Trace around the pattern onto the back of the cardstock and cut out the petals. You’ll need 8 large petals, 8 medium petals and 8 small petals plus the scalloped circles for the flower center and the large circle to use as a base to put the flower together.

Here’s a quick 20 second video to show you how to put the petals together.

Paper Sunflower Video Tutorial

I hung my paper flowers up above a giant shiplap sign in my downstairs living room, but here are a few more ideas for ways you could decorate with these paper sunflowers:

  • Hang them on the wall above a TV or armoire or dresser or corner hutch.
  • Make a bunch to put around your front door (if you have a porch to keep them from getting wet)
  • Make an entire backdrop of sunflowers for a party.
  • Hang them above a window like I did in my craft room.

My free Sunflower SVG is available in my craft library. (Please remember these files are for personal use only.)

You get 3 files, an SVG file which you can use with Cricut or Silhouette machines, a DXF file which you can use in Silhouette Studio Basic Edition, and a PDF file if you are cutting by hand.

Please fill in the short form at the end of this tutorial to get your free Sunflower SVG.

There are two petal sizes and three centers in this design. To start, upload the SVG to your cutting machine, and cut the various parts using your colored card and glitter felt of choice.

The plain circle should be cut out of the Black Glitter Felt. The decorative circle centers should be cut out of the black card. It will look like this in Cricut Design Space…

sunflower svg

If you are cutting by hand, you will use the PDF file in your printer. Print onto white card and cut the the two petals out with your scissors.

Use the plain circle as the template for the glitter felt center, and cut out the two decorative circles from your printed sheet.

You will need to use a Hobby Knife for the inside cuts of the decorative circles, as these are intricate and cannot be cut with scissors successfully.

First place the petal layer with the longer petals on your mat, then cut small pieces of the double sided foam tape and stick them to the center of the petal layer.

I’ve used double sided foam tape to give the flower a slightly three dimensional effect. It will look like this…

sunflower svg

Peel off the protective top layer of the double sided tape and, carefully aligning the centers, press the second petal layer onto the top of the double sided tape.

diy paper sunflower svg

We’re almost there! Using the glue gun, take the black glitter center circle and glue it to the center of the petals. The felt does not adhere well to the double sided foam, the glue gun is much more effective.

sunflower svg

You can then glue one of the decorative center circles to the glitter center. Use the glue gun for this step too. It will look like this…

sunflower free svg

The final finishing touch to this Sunflower is curling the petals. Any round pen or pencil will work, just make sure to use one that has a round body. (If it has ridges, like some HB pencils, this will make ridges on the card)

Take your pen or pencil and, starting at the base of the petal, carefully roll the petal along the shaft of the pen, in between your finger and the pen. As you get towards the end of the petal, angle your wrist up to give a nice curl to the petal. Like you’re scooping ice cream out of the tub!

The tighter you roll, and the more you flick your wrist, the more the petal will curl. Start by gently rolling between pen and finger until you get your desired effect.

sunflower svg paper

And that’s a wrap! You should have a beautiful, handmade Sunflower with a glittering center, that will wow your friends on a spring or summer day!

How to Make a Simple Rolled Paper Sunflower

Many of you enjoyed my giant paper sunflower and I had several requests for a smaller, easier-to-make version that could be used to decorate cards and other things. So I’ve designed an easy-peasy paper sunflower that you just cut and roll up. I even included leaves, a stalk, and a sepal (that’s the leafy thing under the petals). You can make them at a variety of different sizes for whatever you need to decorate.

Here’s a look at this small rolled sunflower next to the giant paper sunflower from last week:

Paper Sunflowers - Giant and Small!

Isn’t it cute? And you’ll notice it has it’s own little spiral seed head. The small rolled sunflower even has the same number of petals as the giant one (and real ones): 55!

The great thing about this small sunflower is how easy and fast it is to make! So let’s make one together, shall we? Here’s what you’ll need:

How to Roll a Small Paper Sunflower

First, cut out your cardstock using Design #37 which is the free SVG or DXF files in my resource library. Feel free to resize the sunflower to meet your needs. I cut mine out at a variety of sizes — I managed to get six to cut on one piece of yellow cardstock!

Uploading the rolled sunflower files to Cricut Design Space

Here you can see how I fit six different sized sunflowers in:

Uploading the rolled sunflower files to Cricut Design Space

Note: The detailed seed head (shown in brown when you upload the files) takes some time to cut out. Feel free to skip it — I think it looks nice with just a solid black seed head. I included it because it was requested. If you do cut it out, make sure you’re using a very sticky mat or it will just slide around during cutting.

Now let’s begin rolling! Insert the loose end of your sunflower petal spiral into the end of your quilling tool and begin rolling toward you, as shown below:

Insert the tip of the rolled paper sunflower into the quilling tool

Keep rolling the petals until they are all rolled up. Do you best to keep the bottom edge of the petals aligned with one another.

Finishing rolling the rolled paper sunflower

Gently pull the quilling tool out of the rolled petals and apply glue to the bottom of the roll.

Gluing the petals of the rolled paper sunflower

Fold over the circle onto the glue and press down to set.

Gluing the petals of the rolled paper sunflower

Turn your sunflower right side up and open up all the petals. Rearrange petals now, while the glue is still a little wet, as you like.

Opening up the petals of the rolled paper sunflower

Glue the back of the solid seed head.

Gluing the seed head to the rolled paper sunflower

Attach the solid seed head to the sunflower and press to set.

Gluing the seed head to the rolled paper sunflower

If you cut out the detailed seed head, spray the back with adhesive and attach on top of the solid seed head, as shown below:

The rolled paper sunflower with the detailed seed head

Place a long stripe of glue on the sepal, parallel to the slit at the top, as shown below.

Glue the back of the sepal on your rolled paper sunflower

Attach the stalk to the lower bottom half of the sepal, like this.

Glue the stalk to the sepal for the rolled paper sunflower

Fold over the sepal along the slit, attaching it to itself and forming a cup shape.

Overlap the two sides of the sepal and glue down for the rolled paper sunflower

This is how the stalk and sepal look after being glued.

A prepared stalk for the rolled paper sunflower

Put a generous amount of glue inside the sepal.

Glue the stalk for the rolled paper sunflower

Place the sunflower petals on top of the sepal with glue, pressing down to set.

Glue the rolled paper sunflower to the stalk

You can fold each leave, if you wish, for a more 3D look

Fold the leaves on the rolled paper sunflower

Your rolled paper sunflower is finished!

Optional: If you wish to strengthen the stem (it is just cardstock, after all), glue some floral wire to the back of your stem. You won’t be able to see it from the front at all!
