Crazy Fast Dodge Charger Performance Trims
The Dodge Charger first hit the streets in as a two-door muscle car. Since the first introduction of the vehicle it has gone through several generations, and in the car was turned into a four-door sedan, making it the only four-door sedan muscle car.
The Dodge Charger is the seventh generation of Chargers and the lineup consists of seven different trims. The seven different Charger trims offer buyers variety and plenty of options to make it their own, whether that is as a powerful performance sedan or a family sedan.
Aside from the Charger SE and SXT that are equipped with the horsepower liter V6 base engine, there are five other trims that have three different engines used on the Charger lineup. These trims include the Charger R/T, R/T Road Track, R/T Scat Pack, SRT , and SRT Hellcat.
Next up from the base engine is the horsepower liter HEMI V8 MDS VVT engine paired to an automatic transmission. This engine is standard on the Charger R/T and R/T Road and Track trims and it gets up to 25 highway mpg+ backed by Best-in-Class horsepower and lb-ft of torque. The track times for this engine include mph in seconds, and finished the quarter mile in just seconds.
The second most powerful engine on the Charger lineup is the liter HEMI V8 engine, also paired to an automatic transmission. It delivers horsepower, lb-ft of torque and it is the standard engine on the Charger R/T Scat Pack and SRT The bigger engine generates horsepower and lb-ft of torque. This engine gets 18 city and 30 highway mpg, not bad for all that power. Track times are great for the R/T Scat Pack and SRT When equipped with the liter engine, the Charger can accelerate from mph in the low four-second range.
Finally, there is the all-mighty Charger SRT Hellcat, which is the fastest sedan ever. The Charger SRT Hellcat is equipped with a Supercharged liter HEMI SRT Hellcat V8 engine. This engine generates horsepower, which is 7 more horses than the Lamborghini Aventador.
The Charger SRT Hellcat has a top speed of miles per hour, a quarter-mile elapsed time of seconds on street tires and can accelerate from mph in the high 3-second range.

They say it’s good to be bad, but sometimes it’s good enough to merely look bad. This version of the Dodge Charger we recently tested is an excellent case in point. At a glance it could easily be taken for an R/T or even a Hellcat, with black inch wheels wearing low-profile Goodyear Eagle tires, a decklid spoiler, and black accents and badges inside and out. It looks deliciously menacing: low, muscular, and mean. The key word, though, is “looks.” Renewed for , the Blacktop edition is an appearance package—visual muscle, if you like—and it’s something of a bargain at $
The look implies muscle, but what you see is not exactly what you get. The SXT sits at the entry end of the Charger lineup, propelled by Chrysler’s excellent liter V-6 and the equally excellent eight-speed automatic transmission. However, this powertrain excellence is mitigated by vehicle mass—two-plus tons.
In this example, with the optional Rallye Group ($), the V-6 is rated at horsepower and lb-ft of torque, a little more than the standard SXT version’s hp and lb-ft. The net result is seconds to 60 mph and seconds through the quarter-mile, hitting 96 mph. That’s quick enough to ward off drowsiness, and the driver won’t have to worry about watching the rear bumpers of Toyota Avalons and Hyundai Azeras pulling away when the light turns green. But it’s a long way from the numbers achievable with a hp Hemi V-8 ( seconds to 60 mph) or the brazen hp Hellcat ( seconds).
However, there’s more to this particular SXT than just the bad-boy cosmetics. With optional Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar summer tires (size /45R) and sport suspension tuning, this big car has surprising agility, accurate electrically assisted power steering, and respectable grip of g.
Braking performance is about what you’d expect of a two-ton sedan— feet from 70 mph, albeit fade free. Understeer ramps up rapidly, and there’s a sense of large masses moving up and down at the corners of the car (those sizable wheels).
On the other hand, ride quality is reasonably compliant considering the level of roll stiffness in the sport suspension, the paddle shifters respond promptly, and the eight-speed is fluid in full auto mode. This is a big sedan, with a roomy, adult-friendly back seat—we also had no trouble fitting both a forward-facing and a backward-facing child seat—and its trunk is generous, even if it’s only about average for the segment.
The Good, the Bad, and the Value
Besides the Rallye Group, other extras on our test car included the Plus Group (heated and ventilated power front seats, leather, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, heated side mirrors, and HID projector-beam headlights, $) and navigation ($). But even at $37, as tested, this Charger is a lot of car for the money. If looking bad is good enough, look no further.

The Charger SE and SXT come standard with a liter V-6 that produces hp and lb-ft of torque ( hp and lb-ft for the optional Rallye Group) and delivers an EPA-rated 19/30 mpg city/highway for rear-wheel drive and 18/27 for all-wheel drive (AWD). The Charger R/T and R/T Road and Track pack Dodge's ubiquitous liter V-8 that produces hp and lb-ft of torque and has an EPA-estimated 16/25 mpg. The hp, lb-ft of torque liter V-8 found in the Charger R/T Scat Pack and SRT has a fuel economy rating of 15/25 mpg. The hp, lb-ft of torque liter supercharged V-8 equipped in the SRT Hellcat manages to achieve an EPA-rated 13/22 mpg. All of this large sedan's engines are paired to an eight-speed automatic that, with the exception of the SE AWD and SXT AWD, sends power to the rear wheels.
For a darker look you can opt for the available Blacktop appearance package that includes sport suspension, inch gloss black wheels, performance tires, satin black badges, satin black rear spoiler, gloss black fascia, performance steering wheel, black cluster instrument cluster gauge rings, and premium floor mats. For better performance and handling, order your Charger with the Super Track Pak and your sports sedan will receive Bilstein shocks, a rear axle ratio for improved acceleration, the suspension is lowered by inches, performance brakes and tires, and Dodge Performance Pages that provides performance information on the 7-inch cluster display screen such as times and G-force indicator. For a premium sound system, order the Harman Kardon audio package and get a speaker audio system with a inch subwoofer enclosed in the trunk and a watt amplifier.
The NHTSA awarded the Dodge Charger its highest overall rating of five stars. The Charger received the IIHS' highest rating of Good for all crash tests with the exception of the small overlap front test, in which the Dodge received the second lowest score of Marginal. The Charger was given the highest rating of Superior for its front crash prevention due to its ability to avoid a collision at 12 mph and reduce the impact speed of a 25 mph collision by 12 mph. If you'd like your Charger to perform the same way, opt for the Technology package that consists of the Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning Plus system that will warn you of a frontal impact and automatically apply the brakes if needed. This package also consists of Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, adaptive cruise control that can come to a complete stop, foldaway power heated memory mirrors, rain-sensitive windshield wipers, and HID headlights.
What We Think
In a First Test review of the Dodge Charger SXT Blacktop, we felt that the V-6 engine sometimes struggled to accelerate the 4,pound car as quickly as we expected, the engine was too quiet, and the paddle shifters were a little slow to respond. However, we did like the strong brakes, excellent grip in the corners, smooth ride, and the comfortable interior. We concluded the review by calling it a good alternative to traditional front-drive sedans, "offering plenty of cargo room, passenger room, and technology. Although the performance may not be where we would like, it likely won't be a hindrance to those buying the SXT."
In a First Test review of the Dodge Charger Hellcat, we enjoyed the sound of the supercharged liter V-8 and said, "Although the Jaguar F-Type's supercharged V-8 makes an intoxicating sound, crack open the throttle on the Charger Hellcat, and the blown Hemi unmistakably proclaims 'American muscle. '" We also liked how the Charger Hellcat did not draw much attention during daily driving: "Despite its hood scoop and pair of heat extractor vents, our Charger Hellcat tester was relatively incognito on the streets. Drivers of other performance cars seemed to be the most aware that our tester was special, though it still took a few incidents for many of them to realize they were dealing with more than just a 'run-of-the-mill' SRT model. '"
The Charger offers 15 wheel options, and inch wheels are standard on the eight-cylinder R/T.
