Spectrum Blames Vandals For Internet Outages In Brooklyn, Queens

If you live in Brooklyn or Queens and had a tough time refreshing your Instagram feed this morning, you weren't alone. A shadowy gang of rogue hackers have taken down The Mainframe, and if things aren't back online in 24 hours we're all going to wake up in the pink goo of our Matrix pods. Of course, Spectrum is claiming their fiber-optic network was hit with "vandalism," but we're sticking with our theory. There is no spoon! I know kung fu!

In a statement to New York Magazine's Select All, Spectrum explained that dastardly vandals were behind the widespread internet outages:

Vandalism of Charter’s fiber-optic network in Brooklyn early this morning has resulted in thousands of customers there losing service. Our repair crews have been working tirelessly I’m [sic] the past several hours to restore service as quickly as possible. We appreciate our customers’ patience as we do. We are also working with the NYPD on an investigation of this latest round of criminal destruction of our network.

Somehow, a group of intrepid digital heroes have managed to fire off distress signals from the black hole:

Hang in there, Netizens!

Spectrum cable outage in Queens caused by vandals, company says

Fiber cables have been damaged twice in two weeks in Central Queens, leaving area Spectrum cable customers without service.

Vandals in central Queens damaged fiber cables for the second time in two weeks, leaving area Spectrum cable customers with nothing but static.

A spokesman for Charter Communications, Spectrum’s parent company, said about 35, accounts were affected by the phone, cable TV and internet outage that began around 2 a.m. Spokesman John Bonomo said crews were immediately dispatched and spent the entire day working on repairs.

Although he didn’t have an exact timetable for full restoration, Bonomo said it would be a gradual process.

“We appreciate our customers’ patience while we restore service as quickly as possible,” he said in a statement.

As of p.m., service was not fully restored, but Spectrum told customers on its Twitter account that it expected to have a final fix by Tuesday evening. Account holders tweeted back their frustrations.

“Stop thanking me for my patience; I’m all out. I want compensation for both outages. This is not a one-off, it’s a pattern!!!” Twitter user @MercedesCardona posted.

On June 26, around the same time, vandals damaged a different fiber optic cable in Queens, which led to a hour disruption of service in the borough. About 60, account holders were affected by that incident.

The NYPD is investigating both outages.

Spectrum restores service after Queens outage that affected 60,

QUEENS, New York (WABC) -- Spectrum says it has fixed a major TV, internet and phone service outage that affected tens of thousands of customers in Queens.

Charter Communications, which owns Spectrum, said crews repaired a fiber-optic cable that was damaged by vandalism. Some cable techs who have been on strike since the end of March showed up Monday night to picket at one of the repair sites.

The outage happened at about 2 a.m. Monday and immediately knocked out service for a significant number of customers in central Queens.

Queens Borough President Melinda Katz posted a message on social media about the situation:

"Per @Spectrum, at approximately 2AM today, vandals cut fiber at 4 major hubs, cutting service for 60, customers in #Queens."

A spokesman for Spectrum issued a statement Monday, saying service was expected to be returned by the evening evening, but that crews were still working to repair service.

"Our crews are on site and working to repair a fiber optic cable damaged by vandalism, which is affecting TV, internet and phone services for Spectrum customers in central Queens. We appreciate our customers' patience while we restore service as quickly as possible."

Downdetector.com, a website that tracks major outages, showed a significant portion of NYC without service - though the company said the outage was limited to Queens.

Customers are posting on social media about the outage:
