Star Wars: 15 Chilling Quotes About The Dark Side

The core of the Star Wars saga has always been the struggle between the Light Side of the Force and the Dark Side — and the latter can be chilling.

The core of the Star Wars saga has always been the struggle between the Light Side of the Force and the Dark Side. In Disney’s sequel trilogy, which plans to wrap up the entire Skywalker saga later this year with the ninth chapter, The Rise of Skywalker, has focused more on the dichotomy of the Light Side and the Dark Side of the Force more than ever before.

The protagonist, Rey, has been continuously tempted by the Dark Side, while the antagonist, Kylo Ren, has been continuously tempted by the Light Side.

Updated on May 30th, 2020 Ben Sherlock:In last year’s The Rise of Skywalker, the Sith came back stronger than ever with an ancient temple and a fleet of Star Destroyers on Exegol. The Emperor had been cloned following his supposed death in Return of the Jedi, and spent the sequel trilogy manipulating Kylo Ren to bring back the dark side following the Rebellion’s victory and the rise of the New Republic (although this smacked of a retcon). So, we’ve updated this list with some new quotes.

15 “If Once You Start Down The Dark Path, Forever Will It Dominate Your Destiny.”

On his deathbed in Return of the Jedi, Yoda fears that Luke will succumb to the temptations of the dark side. He explains, “If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny. Consume you, it will, as it did Obi-Wan’s apprentice.

As the prequel trilogy would go on to explain in some detail a few years later, Obi-Wan’s apprentice was Luke’s father, Anakin. Small world, right?

14 “The Fear Of Loss Is A Path To The Dark Side.”

When Anakin comes to Yoda with his fears of losing Padme, Yoda informs him that such a fear can lead goodhearted Force users to the dark side if their feelings get out of hand.

That’s exactly what happens when Anakin brings the same fears to Palpatine and Palpatine promises to teach him how to save Padme if he converts to the Sith.

13 “The Dark Side Is In Our Blood.”

Kylo Ren tells Rey, “The dark side is in our blood,” in reference to the fact that Rey is a Palpatine and Ben Solo is a Skywalker. It’s a little reductive for Ben to say that the dark side is in his blood, since his only evil relative is Anakin, and Anakin was redeemed before his death.

Plus, Rey goes on to prove that the dark side isn’t hereditary, because she remains a hero to the end and kills her grandfather to rid the galaxy of the Sith.

12 “Did You Ever Hear The Tragedy Of Darth Plagueis The Wise?”

While watching a strange kind of opera starring bubbles, Palpatine is approached by Anakin, who voices his concerns about the visions he saw of Padme dying.

Palpatine seizes the opportunity to clinch Anakin as his new Sith apprentice and asks, “Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise?” This is the Sith legend that turns Anakin to the dark side.

11 “I Am All The Sith!”

In the final battle in The Rise of Skywalker, when it becomes apparent to the Emperor that Rey isn’t interested in taking his place as the Sith’s leader, he tells his long-lost granddaughter, “You are nothing! A scavenger girl is no match for the power in me! I am all the Sith!

Rey quips back, “And I am all the Jedi,” before using the power of two crossed lightsabers to deflect the Emperor’s Force lightning back at him and obliterate him from the face of Exegol.

10 “He has grown strong. Only together can we turn him to the Dark Side of the Force.”

In Return of the Jedi, the Emperor realized that Darth Vader intended to continue searching for Luke Skywalker in his attempt to turn him to the Dark Side. The Emperor assured him that, in time, Luke would come to him. Whether he wanted to try to convert his father back to the Light Side or defeat him once and for all in a rematch, he would come looking for Vader: “Patience, my friend. In time, he will seek you out. And when he does, you must bring him before me. He has grown strong. Only together can we turn him to the Dark Side of the Force.”

9 “Kylo Ren is strong with the Dark Side of the Force. Without the Jedi, we won’t stand a chance against him.”

Ever since The Last Jedi gave us a new version of Luke who was grizzled, cynical, and bitter – and wanted to end the Jedi Order for good – Star Wars fans have been debating whether or not he’s right about the Jedi. Rey certainly seems to think he’s wrong, insisting throughout the whole movie that the Jedi should continue to prosper, because otherwise, the Resistance will have no chance of defeating Kylo Ren and the First Order. By the end of the movie, Luke has a change of heart and sacrifices himself to allow the Jedi to continue in their struggle.

8 “Luke, don’t give in to hate. That leads to the Dark Side.”

When Luke Skywalker goes to Dagobah to be trained as a Jedi by an even older, even wiser Yoda than we saw in the prequel trilogy, he’s joined by the Force ghost of Obi-Wan, the guy who sent him to Dagobah in the first place. As soon as Luke realizes Darth Vader is setting up a trap to capture Han and Leia and use them as bargaining chips to get Luke to turn himself in, he tells R2-D2 to fire up the X-wing. But Obi-Wan warns his young, heroic friend that if he faces Vader, he’ll be facing him alone, and that if he acts out of hatred, he’ll be led to the Dark Side.

7 “The shroud of the Dark Side has fallen. Begun, the Clone War has!”

Near the beginning of Attack of the Clones, when Palpatine is in negotiations with Yoda and Mace Windu about whether or not the Republic is about to go to war with the Separatists, Palpatine asks Yoda if he believes the political talks will lead to war. Yoda says, “The Dark Side clouds everything. Impossible to see, the future is.”

This scene seems to foreshadow a war breaking out, but no one actually expects it to happen, so when the Clone Wars begin at the end of the film, the audience is surprised – especially since the Dark Side prevented Yoda from seeing it coming.

6 “The Chosen One, the boy may be. Nevertheless, grave danger, I fear in his training.”

Yoda proved more than ever before that he’s the wisest of all the Jedi in The Phantom Menace when he objected to Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan training Anakin. As soon as Anakin came before him on Coruscant, he could sense darkness in his soul. Qui-Gon was adamant that Anakin was the fabled “Chosen One,” and while Yoda doesn’t deny this, he still thinks that training Anakin to use the Force would be a bad idea. He had a change of heart after Qui-Gon’s death to appease his dying wish, but as it turns out, he was right on the money about the grave danger posed by Anakin’s training.

5 “You’re fulfilling your destiny, Anakin. Become my apprentice. Learn to use the Dark Side of the Force.”

Towards the end of Revenge of the Sith, the best prequel, Anakin’s journey to the Dark Side comes down to one integral moment. He finds Mace Windu and Darth Sidious in an intense battle. Sidious is hitting Windu with Force lightning and Windu is trying to hold it off with his lightsaber. Anakin has to choose which one to save – the Jedi Knight or the Sith Lord. In the end, he chooses to save the Sith Lord, chopping off Windu’s hand, allowing Sidious to send him flying out the window, completing Anakin’s path to the Dark Side of the Force.

4 “The First Order rose from the Dark Side. You did not.”

This line from Tekka in the opening scene of The Force Awakens might be hinting that Kylo Ren will not be redeemed. In the original trilogy, Darth Vader’s redemption wasn’t even considered a possibility until the very end of the third movie, in which his Dark Side tendencies were questioned and he killed the Emperor to save his son.

But the sequel trilogy has been suggesting Kylo Ren will turn back to the Light Side and be redeemed pretty strongly since the beginning. Maybe it will invert the Vader story arc and have a darker ending, if Kylo Ren does not turn good and remains evil.

3 “If only you knew the power of the Dark Side...”

In the climactic sequence of The Empire Strikes Back, Luke Skywalker took on Darth Vader in the lightsaber duel we’d been waiting to see since the saga first began. Unfortunately, Luke hadn’t completed his training and Vader managed to overpower him, besting him in combat and lopping off one of his hands. He gets him backed onto a ledge and, there, offers him a position at his side in leading the Galactic Empire. Luke swears he’ll never join Vader, but Vader tries to lure him in with the promise of a mass of power that he can’t even comprehend yet.

2 “The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.”

The Sith Lord Darth Plagueis is explored in the Star Wars Expanded Universe, which Disney renamed “Star Wars Legends” after they acquired Lucasfilm, thus removing them from the established canon. This angered a lot of fans, since it meant that all those hours of reading novels and comic books and playing video games were technically a waste of time. But since Plagueis was mentioned by Palpatine in Revenge of the Sith as he wooed Anakin over to the Dark Side, he managed to slip under the wire and remain canon. Hopefully, he’ll be depicted in one of Disney’s future movies.

1 “Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.”

This is one of the final things Yoda says to Luke with his dying breath in Return of the Jedi. Luke has come back to Dagobah to complete his Jedi training, but Yoda assures him that he’s almost done. To complete his training, he’ll have to face Darth Vader again. He also warns Luke not to underestimate the immense power of the Emperor, because once he’s under his spell and facing temptations to join the Dark Side, he won’t be able to save himself and stay on the righteous path. This is the mistake that Luke’s father made all those years ago.

“The dark side will devour those who lack the power to control it. It’s a fierce storm of emotion that annihilates anything in its path. It lays waste to the weak and unworthy. Lucifer is the dark side of cosmic fecundity, the cutting blade of the sculptor”s knife. Nature does not abhor evil; she embraces it. “That man never really dies who knows how to assume sufficient empire over others to be able to trace lasting marks of his energy and power over the minds of those who, under his influence, bend their steps toward the highest.”

“Why fear to reanimate ALL the possibilities that lie dormant in our natures? Is it not desirable to cultivate all plants indiscriminately? There are those that are poisonous, true, yet even these are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Large doses of certain drugs cause death; but, administered wisely with the hand of a skilful physician, they bring relief and very often a complete cure. The same may be said of many forces that are evil only because they are not disciplined.”

“Thought is energy. Active thought is active energy; concentrated thought is a concentrated energy. Thought concentrated on a definite purpose becomes power. This is the power which is being used by those who do not believe in the virtue of poverty, or the beauty of self-denial. They perceive that this is the talk of weaklings.

The ability to receive and manifest this power depends upon the ability to recognize the Infinite Energy ever dwelling in man, constantly creating and recreating his body and mind, and ready at any moment to manifest through him in any needful manner. In exact proportion to the recognition of this truth will be the manifestation in the outer life of the individual.”

“The weak have no place here, in this life or in any other life. Weakness leads to slavery. Weakness leads to all kinds of misery, physical and mental. Weakness is death. There are hundreds of thousands of microbes surrounding us, but they cannot harm us unless we become weak, until the body is ready and predisposed to receive them. There may be a million microbes of misery, floating about us. Never mind! They dare not approach us, they have no power to get a hold on us, until the mind is weakened. This is the great fact: strength is life, weakness is death. Strength is felicity, life eternal, immortal; weakness is constant strain and misery: weakness is death.”

“Most people live, whether physically, intellectually or morally, in a very restricted circle of their potential being. They make use of a very small portion of their possible consciousness, and of their soul’s resources in general, much like a man who, out of his whole bodily organism, should get into a habit of using and moving only his lttle finger. Great emergencies and crises show us how much greater our vital resources are than we had supposed.”

“Real understanding in spiritual matters is the result of much bitter fighting, of suffering, spiritual agony and soul passion. Life itself would have no meaning if there was no fighting on all planes, if all was smooth and monotonous. Everything fights in nature. Every plant fights to get more sunshine, every animal fights for food; the angels themselves fight. Constant struggle on all planes to which it has access is the birthright of the creature. Woe to him who wants to put himself on a level with the Creator and escape fighting!”

“A considerable percentage of the people we meet on the street are people who are empty inside, that is, they are actually already dead. It is fortunate for us that we do not see and do not know it. If we knew what a number of people are actually dead and what a number of these dead people govern our lives, we should go mad with horror.”

“Without struggle, no progress and no result. Every breaking of habit produces a change in the machine.”

“Man is asleep. Man does not have real consciousness or will at all. Man is not free. For man, everything just happens. However, man can become conscious and find man’s real place, as a human being, in creation but this requires a profound inner transformation.”

“My way is to develop the hidden potentialities of man; a way that is against Nature and against God.”

“There is no altruism or love-thy-neighbor concept in the Satanic religion, except in the sense of helping other adherents of the Black Path to gain their desires by group energy. Satanism is a blatantly selfish, brutal religion. It is based on the belief that man is inherently a selfish, violent creature, that life is a Darwinian struggle for survival of the fittest, that the earth will be ruled by those who fight to win the ceaseless competition that exists in all jungles.”

“This is a war universe. War all the time. That is its nature. There may be other universes based on all sorts of other principles, but ours seems to be based on war and games.”

“I can feel you, my master, faint, weak. No longer do your teachings whisper within my skull.”

“I wanted to be Master of the Sith and ruler of the galaxy. But that destiny was not mine, Revan. It might have been yours, perhaps . . . but never mine. And in the end, as the darkness takes me, I am nothing.”

“I will not fall, I cannot die.”

“Kreia, she will try to break you, and when she does you will fall, and if you do, you will die.”

“Long have I waited for the last of the Jedi to fall at my feet.”

“Savior, conqueror, hero, villain. You are all things, Revan, and yet you are nothing. In the end you belong to neither the light nor the darkness. You will forever stand alone.”

“She shields him, protects him. I will destroy everything she loves, all that she holds dear. I will cast his corpse at her feet; it will be as if killing her children.”

“Still . . . still spouting the wisdom of the Jedi, I see. Maybe there is more truth in their code than I ever believed. I . . . I cannot help but wonder, Revan. What would have happened had our positions been reversed? What if fate had decreed I would be captured by the Jedi? Could I have returned to the light, as you did? If you had not led me down the dark path in the first place, what destiny would I have found?”

“The dark side is emotion, Bane. Anger, hate, love, lust. These are what make us strong, Peace is a lie. There is only passion. Your passion is still there, Bane. Seek it out. Reclaim it.”

“The Lord Revan could have ruled an empire, made the galaxy strong again, instead he chose weakness, and ran away.”

“The past is a ghost that haunts us. Ghosts must banished. Lingering on the past is weakness, Lord Vader.”

“The Sith were the sworn enemies of the Jedi and the Republic. They sought to wipe us from existence; they sought to rule the galaxy.”

“We are not your Sith. We are something new, a chance to do something right. A new tribe.”

“When you finally betray me, I hope you care enough to try to kill my yourself.”

“Wipe this pathetic planet from the face of the galaxy!”

“You are a wretched thing, of weakness and fear.”

“You are strong, child–but I will break you!”

“Your predecessor once made the mistake of questioning my orders, Admiral, surely you’re not so foolish as him to commit the same mistake…”

Here is an explanation of Star Wars and the first Sith War.

The Sith Code

QUOTES FROM A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY

Peace is a lie. There is only passion.
Through passion I gain strength.
Through strength I gain power.
Through power I gain victory.
Through victory my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me.
–The Sith Code

“Do you feel it? Do you feel the power of the dark side? The only real power! The only thing worth living for!”

“Equality is a lie…a myth to appease the masses. Simply look around and you will see the lie for what it is! There are those with power, those with the strength and will to lead. And there are those meant to follow – those incapable of anything but servitude and a meager, worthless existence.”

“The dark side will devour those who lack the power to control it. It’s a fierce storm of emotion that annihilates anything in its path. It lays waste to the weak and unworthy. But those who are strong can ride the storm winds to unfathomable heights. They can unlock their true potential; they can sever the chains that bind them; they can dominate the world around them. Only those with the power to control the dark side can ever truly be free.”
–Darth Bane

“Without strife, your victory has no meaning. Without strife, you do not advance. Without strife, there is only stagnation.” –Uthar Wynn

“I have studied you, and found nothing but weakness.” —Darth Sion

“Evil is a word used by the ignorant and the weak. The dark side is about survival. It’s about unleashing your inner power. It glorifies the strength of the individual.”

“I can use my powers to conjure up your worst nightmares and bring them to life before your eyes. I can drive you mad with fear, shred your sanity, and leave you a raving lunatic for the rest of your life.”

“This is the way of our Order. An individual may die, but the Sith are eternal.”
—Darth Zannah

“It has been said that anyone who knows the ways of the Force can set her- or himself up as a King on any world where only she or he knows the ways of the Force. Any Jedi could do this. But the Jedi, fools that they are, adhere to a religion in which the Force is used only in the service of others. How shortsighted of them. Is that not why they lost the galaxy to the dark side?”
–Darth Sidious, The Weakness of Inferiors

“Oh no, my young Jedi. You will find that it is you who are mistaken…about a great many things.”
–Darth Sidious, Return of the Jedi

“Everything of significance is the result of conquest.”
–Darth Sidious, Book of Sith

“Through us, the powers of chaos are harnessed and exploited. Dark times don’t simply emerge, Sidious. Enlightened beings, guiding intelligences manipulate events to bring about a storm that will deliver power into the hands of an elite group willing to make the hard choices the Republic fears to make. Beings may elect their leaders, but the Force has elected us.”

“You must begin by gaining power over yourself; then another; then a group, an order, a world, a species, a group of species… finally, the galaxy itself.”

“The power of the dark side is an illness no true Sith would wish to be cured of.”

“Tell me what you regard as your greatest strength, so I will know how best to undermine you; tell me of your greatest fear, so I will know which I must force you to face; tell me what you cherish most, so I will know what to take from you; and tell me what you crave, so that I might deny you…”

“Evil? What is that? …You said you were death itself. Are you evil, then, or are you simply stronger and more awake than others? Who gives more shape to sentient history: the good, who adhere to the tried and true, or those who seek to rouse beings from their stupor and lead them to glory? A storm you are, but a much needed one, to wash away the old and complacent and prune the galaxy of deadweight.”

–Darth Plagueis

“Here in my meditation chamber I can see the galaxy in my mind’s eye; I can visualize vast armies, powerful fleets, invincible warriors — and with Sith arts, my imagination can make them real!” –Naga Sadow

“Don’t be too proud of this technological terror you’ve constructed. The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force.” –Darth Vader

“To we who dwell in the Force, normal life is little more than pretense. Our only actions of significance are those we undertake in service to the dark side.” –Darth Tenebrous

“To be a Sith is to taste freedom and to know victory.”

“It is conflict that improves the lot of civilization and the single being both. Conflict forces one to better oneself. It forces change, growth, adaptation, evolution, or death. These are not our laws, but the universe’s. Without conflict, you have only stagnation.”
–Yuthura Ban

“Fear. Fear attracts the fearful. The strong. The weak. The innocent. The corrupt. Fear. Fear is my ally.”
–Darth Maul

“We will disperse into the galaxy in small numbers, masking ourselves, hiding amidst the enemy. We will infiltrate governments on every planet. All must be brought down for something new to be created. Together or alone, we will slip onto worlds and strike from the shadows. We will be invisible. We will be patient. All that exists will be torn apart from within. Darth Krayt’s vision of the galaxy remade will be realized. He lives in us. The Sith will prevail.” –Darth Nihl

QUOTES FROM OUR GALAXY

“Power is our passion.
War is our Way.
Darkness is our Destiny.
The Force will set us free.”
–The Sith Academy Code

“The true test of our philosophy is war; the real measure of our Force mastery is power; the highest truth of Sithism is victory.”

“To dare to dream of something that has never existed and to make it a reality; to conjure up your deepest fears and darkest hopes; to pursue a vision ruthlessly and without relent; to create the artifacts, ideology and organization of the empires of your mind: this is real black magic, the source of all true power.”

“No amount of discipline will turn sheep into wolves.”

“We claim all nations, all planets, all stars – they are ours.”
–Darth Imperius

“Only this have I learned so far, that man needs what is most evil in him for what is best in him – that whatever is most evil is his best power and the hardest stone for the highest creator; and that man must become better and more evil.” –Friedrich Nietzsche, Thus Spake Zarathustra

“What is good? All that heightens the feeling of power, the will to power, power itself in man. What is bad? All that proceeds from weakness. What is happiness? The feeling that power increasesthat a resistance is overcome.” –Friedrich Nietzsche, The Antichrist

“I teach you the Superman. Man is something that should be overcome.” –Friedrich Nietzsche, Thus Spake Zarathustra

“Light will for a time have to be called darkness: this is the path you must tread.” –Friedrich Nietzsche, Human, All Too Human

“The greatest happiness is to scatter your enemy, to drive him before you, to see his cities reduced to ashes, to see those who love him shrouded in tears, and to gather into your bosom his wives and daughters.”

“With Heaven’s aid I have conquered for you a huge empire. But my life was too short to achieve the conquest of the world. That task is left for you.”
–Genghis Khan

“Filling the conscious mind with ideal conceptions is a characteristic of Western theosophy, but not the confrontation with the Shadow and the world of darkness. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious. The latter procedure, however, is disagreeable and therefore not popular.” –Carl Jung

“We must know that war is common to all and strife is justice, and that all things come into being through strife necessarily.” –Heraclitus of Ephesus

“The intangible represents the real power of the universe. It is the seed of the tangible.”

“There are no limits. There are plateaus, but you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. If it kills you, it kills you. A man must constantly exceed his level.”

“Defeat is a state of mind. No one is ever defeated until defeat has been accepted as reality. To me, defeat in anything is merely temporary, and its punishment is but an urge for me to greater effort to achieve my goal. Defeat simply tells me that something is wrong in my doing; it is a path leading to success and truth.”

“As you think, so shall you become.”
–Bruce Lee

“The question isn’t who is going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me.”

“Ask yourself whether the dream of heaven and greatness should be waiting for us in our graves – or whether it should be ours here and now and on this earth.”
–Ayn Rand

“The nature scientists uncover has crafted our viler impulses into us: in fact, these impulses are a part of the process she uses to create. Lucifer is the dark side of cosmic fecundity, the cutting blade of the sculptor”s knife. Nature does not abhor evil; she embraces it. With it she moved the human world to greater heights of organization, intricacy, and power.” –Howard Bloom, The Lucifer Principle

–Yoritomo-Tashi

“Thought is energy. Active thought is active energy; concentrated thought is a concentrated energy. Thought concentrated on a definite purpose becomes power. This is the power which is being used by those who do not believe in the virtue of poverty, or the beauty of self-denial. They perceive that this is the talk of weaklings.

The ability to receive and manifest this power depends upon the ability to recognize the Infinite Energy ever dwelling in man, constantly creating and recreating his body and mind, and ready at any moment to manifest through him in any needful manner. In exact proportion to the recognition of this truth will be the manifestation in the outer life of the individual.” –Charles Haanel, The Master Key System

Strength is felicity, life eternal, immortal; weakness is constant strain and misery: weakness is death.” –Swami Vivekananda

Great emergencies and crises show us how much greater our vital resources are than we had supposed.” –William James

Woe to him who wants to put himself on a level with the Creator and escape fighting!” –Theodore Illion, Darkness Over Tibet

–G. I. Gurdjieff

“There is no altruism or love-thy-neighbor concept in the Satanic religion, except in the sense of helping other adherents of the Black Path to gain their desires by group energy. Satanism is a blatantly selfish, brutal religion. It is based on the belief that man is inherently a selfish, violent creature, that life is a Darwinian struggle for survival of the fittest, that the earth will be ruled by those who fight to win the ceaseless competition that exists in all jungles.” –Burton Wolfe, introduction to The Satanic Bible

“This is a war universe. War all the time. That is its nature. There may be other universes based on all sorts of other principles, but ours seems to be based on war and games.” –William S. Burroughs

Quotes sith

With a second jerk he throws it back and also sharply enters me. The sperm from the first does not have time to leave me and the second pushes it inside, deeper into the uterus. Again sharp jerks, biting my lip so as not to scream from orgasm. I'm finishing. Sparks from the eyes.

The Sith Code

I already thought that he would easily squeeze his boob with his palm, but I was mistaken, he decided to cheat. His hand did not squeeze his boob, he simply took the pendant that was hanging from Lena's neck with his fingers, and began to type look at it, asking. His wife something, apparently in the subject, because the wife was also answering something looking at the pendant and jabbing a finger at him.

Having seen enough, he carefully lowered his hand with the pendant into the cut of his blouse and unclenched his fingers.
