Why We Like It

Why We Like the Chase Freedom Flex® Card

We love that the Chase Freedom Flex card expands on an already lucrative offering from Chase. The original Chase Freedom card was already a solid choice for cash-back enthusiasts, and this one raises the bar.

The Freedom Flex also gives cardholders access to Chase Ultimate Rewards, which is arguably the most versatile credit card rewards platform available. You’ll get plenty of redemption options at good rates. Plus, if you have one of the program’s travel credit cards, you can transfer points from your Chase Freedom Flex to your travel card account and get even more value and flexibility with how you redeem.

For a cash-back credit card, the sign-up bonus is already impressive, but add the grocery store bonus and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better offer with no annual fee attached.

The Chase Freedom Flex® card is an excellent cash-back credit card for people who are looking to maximize rewards. New cardholders can earn a $200 cash bonus after making $500 in purchases during the first three months of account opening. Why We Like It

Why We Like the Chase Freedom Unlimited® Card

You don’t need excellent credit to get the Chase Freedom Unlimited. In fact, many cardholders report getting approved with good credit. We like that the card offers a high flat rewards rate but also provides accelerated rewards on some common everyday spending categories. You’ll also get access to the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal, which allows you to use your cash-back earnings for travel rewards, gift cards and more.

And that sign-up bonus? It’s pretty easy to reach the spending requirements, assuming that you can spend $500 in purchases within the first three billing cycles. Who Should Use This Credit Card? People who are beginning with travel rewards cards.

Why We Like It

Why We Like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred actually works like having over a dozen different rewards credit cards. That’s because this credit card allows you to transfer your rewards points into miles with 11 airlines and points with three hotel programs.

Although the Chase Sapphire Preferred might not be ideal for the most frequent travelers and highest spenders, it’s part of a family of Chase cards that has a built-in upgrade path. So when it comes time to take your travel rewards game to the next level, you won’t have to start from scratch with an entirely different credit card and rewards program.

The card has a $95 annual fee, but the $50 annual Ultimate Rewards Hotel Credit effectively reduces that fee to $45. Plus, the credit card allows you to continue earning points through bonus categories and a 10% anniversary points boost. But when it comes time to redeem your rewards for travel, this card really shines. You can take advantage of some really strong transfer partners such as United, Southwest, Singapore Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and Hyatt. Similarly, you can just book any reservation you want through the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel center.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is one of the gold standards for earning travel rewards. New cardmembers can earn 60,000 bonus points after using their card to spend $4,000 within three months of account opening. This is worth $750 in travel reservations booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards, but potentially more when transferred to airline and hotel partners. Additionally, cardholders enjoy an annual $50 hotel credit, 10% anniversary point boost and everyday bonus categories like online groceries and select streaming services. Opening New Chase Accounts

The process for opening new Chase bank accounts is generally simple and can be completed either online or in-branch at a brick-and-mortar location. Chase has 5,100 branches nationwide, and you’ll most likely find one near you. Otherwise, you can open an account online through Chase’s secure website.

Similarly, applying for a Chase credit card account online is the fastest way to become a new cardmember. The process takes just a few minutes, and you’ll typically get a response within seconds after you submit your application. However, it’s important to understand both your credit score range and your chances of approval before applying for a credit card. Our guide to getting approved for a credit card provides helpful details about the approval process and tips on improving your credit score.

A Quick Note About Direct Deposits

The term direct deposit refers to the deposit of funds electronically into a bank account rather than through a physical, paper check. Direct deposit requires the use of an electronic network that allows deposits to take place between banks. This network is called the automated clearing house (ACH). Because the funds are transferred electronically, recipients’ accounts are credited automatically, so there is no need to wait for the money to clear. Common sources for direct deposit include paychecks, tax refunds and other government-issued benefits.

Chase Bank specifies that a direct deposit needs to be an ACH deposit of an employer payroll check, pension or government benefits (such as Social Security). Person to Person payments (such as Chase Quickpay with Zelle) are not considered a direct deposit.

(Ended January 7, 2020)

This $150 cash bonus isn’t the biggest savings account bonus we’ve seen, but for someone who’s been considering Chase anyway, it’s a nice little incentive to start the process sooner rather than later. While there is no minimum opening deposit or direct deposit required for this savings bonus, you must deposit $10,000 or more within the first 20 days of account opening to qualify for this $150 cash bonus.

Bonus$150
Monthly Fee$5
Balance to Avoid Fee$300 at the beginning of each day

When you apply for a new account, you’ll need to enter a Chase coupon code to get the deal. Apply through the promotional page, and the Chase coupon code will be added for you. Alternatively, Chase can send a coupon code to your email address if you want to apply later.

Then once your account opening is completed, you’ll earn $150 bonus after you deposit $10,000 or more in new money during the first 20 days, then keep that balance for at least 90 days. Once you’ve met those requirements, you’ll receive the $150 bonus within 10 business days.

As with most Chase Bank offers, only new Chase savings customers are eligible. A new customer is defined as being someone who has not had a savings account in the past 90 days. Additionally, if you’ve received a new savings account bonus from Chase in the past two years, you won’t be able to receive the bonus.

(Ended September 30, 2020)

Chase Premier Plus Checking raises the bar when it comes to new personal checking account sign-up bonuses. As recently as September of 2020, new customers could earn $300 when opening a qualifying account. However, this promotion ended on September 30, 2020.

Bonus$300
Monthly Fee$25
Balance to Avoid Fee$15,000

To receive the $300 bonus, you will need to satisfy the following:

  1. Apply and qualify for a new Chase Premier Checking account.
  2. Receive a paycheck, pension or government benefits direct deposit within 90 days from your account opening date.

It only takes 10 business days to receive your $300 bonus once you open a new Chase Premier Plus checking account and satisfy the bank’s criteria. As with the previous offer above, you must be a new Chase checking customer to qualify (or someone without any open Chase checking accounts in the last 90 days). And if you have any old, closed Chase checking accounts in your name, they can’t have negative balances. Finally, you’re ineligible if you’ve received another new checking account bonus from Chase in the past two years.

(Ended September 15, 2020)

Whether you’re a brand new investor or a seasoned pro, You Invest by J.P. Morgan comes with several perks you might enjoy. The account offers commission-free trades on thousands of investments with zero fees — maintenance or otherwise.

While the bonus offer expired in September of 2020, at the time, it came in three different tiers. You could earn up to

  • $200 when you fund a qualifying new account with $25,000–$99,999
  • $200 when you fund a qualifying new account with $25,000–$99,999
  • $350 when you fund a qualifying new account with $100,000–$249,999
  • $350 when you fund a qualifying new account with $100,000–$249,999
  • $725 when you fund a qualifying new account with $250,000 or more
  • $725 when you fund a qualifying new account with $250,000 or more

To qualify for any of the three bonuses above, you need to open your new trade account, deposit your investment funds (from a non-Chase bank) within 45 days of account opening and keep your new funds in the account for 90 days or more. Once you satisfy these criteria, Chase will deposit your bonus within 10 business days.

Who qualifies for the Chase $600 bonus?

Everyone is eligible for one checking bonus and one savings account opening related bonus every 2 years from the time you last received a bonus from Chase.

That also means if you had a checking bonus from Chase in the last 2 years, but never opened a savings account, you can get the bonus for the savings (and vice versa).

You also can’t be a current customer for the specific account you’re applying to.

What are the details?

Availability: Nationwide
Expiration: 10/1/2020 (see new offer link here)
Household Limit: None (everyone in your family can get the bonus!)
Direct Deposit Required: Yes, any amount for checking account (see what counts as a direct deposit)
Early Account Termination Fee: Must keep the account open for 6 months or you will forfeit the bonus

The Chase $600 bonus is broken up as follows:

  • Checking Account: Receive a bonus of $300 when you open a Chase Total checking account with $25 or more and have a direct deposit within 90 days of account opening
  • Savings Account: Receive a bonus of $200 when you open a Chase savings account and deposit $15,000 or more within 20 days of account opening and maintain a balance of $15,000 for 90 days
  • Extra Bonus: Receive an extra $100 bonus for completing both account bonuses

After you have completed all requirements, Chase will deposit the bonus due within 10 business days.

Ninja Note:

For the savings account bonus, I recommend depositing the $15,000 by writing a check out to yourself from a checking account you have at another bank. Then use mobile deposit or deposit the check at a physical Chase branch. It appears as though electronic bank transfers for an amount that large triggers a security alert with Chase and it’ll take a call to their customer service to clear warning – you can avoid the hassle with a check deposit.

For the checking account bonus, I recommend having a real direct deposit of any amount to trigger the bonus. In the past, there were many other transfers that counted as a direct deposit, but it seems like it hasn’t worked with Chase very recently.

You can either apply directly online, or enter your email address and Chase will send you a coupon which you bring with you to a Chase branch.

Chase Bank bonus account opening options

Avoiding Fees

The checking account has a monthly fee of $10-12 and the savings account has a monthly fee of $5, both can be waived if you do ONE of the following:

Checking Account:

  • Keep a minimum daily balance of $1,500 or more
  • Keep an average daily balance of $5,000 or more in all your qualifying Chase accounts combined

Savings Account:

  • Keep a minimum daily balance of $300 or more
  • Have at least 1 repeating automatic transfer of $25 or more from your Chase checking account (one-time transfers do not count)
  • Have a linked Chase Better Banking Checking, Chase Premier Checking, Chase Premier Plus Checking, Chase Sapphire Checking, or Chase Private Client Checking account

Terms & Conditions

  • Checking offer is not available to existing Chase checking customers.
  • Savings offer is not available to existing Chase savings customers.
  • Both offers are not available to those whose accounts have been closed within 90 days or closed with a negative balance.
  • You can receive only one new checking and one new savings account opening related bonus every two years from the last enrollment date and only one bonus per account.

The Bottom Line

This is the best promotion Chase has offered to the public.

In the past, you could have done this every year, but since it got so popular, they have increased the time required between receiving bonuses to every two years.

The savings account’s requirement of leaving $15,000 in there for 3 months may be difficult for some people to do, but everyone should at least be opening up a checking account. Getting $300 for putting $25 in and having one direct deposit is easy breezy, lemon squeezy.

I’ve done this for all 4 of my family members – it’s an easy $2,400 in free money!

Why banks have sign-up bonuses

Banks use sign-up bonuses to distinguish themselves from others in the industry. Cash bonuses also help financial institutions bring in new customers and new deposits. Banks are particularly inclined to offer bonuses in a rising interest rate environment, when the spread between the interest rate they offer customers for deposits versus the interest rate they can get by lending money widens.

While they could pay account holders a higher yield, for some banks, offering a bonus is preferable.

“It’s much easier to quantify the bonus than it is to raise the rate on what you’re paying out on deposits,” says Greg McBride, CFA, Bankrate chief financial analyst.

Some banks offer more than one sign-up bonus. But qualifying for multiple bonuses at the same time at the same bank usually isn’t possible. Bank account bonuses are typically available only to new checking or savings account holders.

What to watch out for

Every bank account bonus isn’t a good deal. Before you sign up, read the fine print.

Watch out for sky-high minimum balance requirements and monthly fees that could eat into your earnings. If earning a bonus seems to require too much effort, you might want to look for another one.

If you’re applying for a checking account, make sure it’s a good match that meets your needs. For example, if you need to use branches and ATMs, double-check that there are plenty of them in your area. That way, you’re not driving miles to meet with a banker or wasting money on out-of-network ATM fees. And with coronavirus forcing banking to shift online more than ever before, look for a bank or credit union that offers a solid set of digital tools.

If you’re looking for a new savings account, consider whether you’re better off finding another bank that pays more interest.

For instance, one-time bonuses are typically offered on accounts that pay minimal interest. So while the bonus is great initially, you may be sacrificing the long-term return.
