Setting autocad DEFAULT

Defines the units and area of your drawing.

Note: The STARTUP system variable must be set to a value of 1 for this dialog box to be displayed.

List of Options

The following options are displayed.

The Quick Setup wizard has two pages: Units and Area. As you work in this wizard, choose Back and Next to switch between pages; choose Finish on the last page to close the wizard and create the new drawing with the settings you specified.

Units

Indicates the format in which you enter and in which the program displays coordinates and measurements. Several formats are available. Engineering and Architectural have a specific base unit (inches) assigned to them. You can select from other measurement styles that can represent any convenient unit of measurement.

Note: You control the precision (the number of decimal places displayed in all measurements) by using the Advanced Setup wizard or the UNITS command. The default precision used by Quick Setup is four (0.0000).

Decimal

Displays measurements in decimal notation.

Engineering

Displays measurements in feet and decimal inches.

Architectural

Displays measurements in feet, inches, and fractional inches.

Fractional

Displays measurements in mixed-number (integer and fractional) notation.

Scientific

Displays measurements in scientific notation (numbers expressed in the form of the product of a decimal number between 0 and 10 and a power of 10).

Area

Indicates the width and length in full-scale units of what you plan to draw. This setting limits the area of the drawing covered by grid dots when the grid is turned on. When limits checking is turned on with the LIMITS command, this setting also restricts the coordinates you can enter to within the rectangular area. You can change the drawing area and turn limits checking on and off with the LIMITS command.

AutoCAD

Solution:

To get AutoCAD to correctly keep its settings, do one or more of the following:

  • On the command line in AutoCAD, enter the WSSETTINGS command and select Automatically save Workspace changes.
  • In Options under the Profile tab, verify the correct profile is enabled. If the wrong profile is loading, check the shortcut used to launch AutoCAD to see if it has a /p switch.
  • If using a custom profile, switch to the default Civil 3D profile as described below. Then edit the out of the box profile as desired.
Type Options  Profiles > Select "C3D_Imperial" or "C3D_Metric" > Set Current > OK.
 
  • If using AutoCAD over a remote connection, exit the program after making changes before logging out of the remote connection.
  • Save a custom Workspace as opposed to relying on differing AutoCAD profiles. Use the WSSAVE command or click "Save Current As" in the Workspace menu on the status bar.
  • Disable custom VBA or LISP scripts that have been added to AutoCAD.
  • ​Verify permissions in the registry (see Warning below):
    1. Press WINDOWS-R on the keyboard to bring up the Run window, enter REGEDIT and click OK.
    2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk.
    3. Right-click Autodesk and choose Permissions.
    4. Select Full Control for the user, SYSTEM, and Administrators.
    5. Repeat for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Autodesk.
  • ​​Uninstall third-party add-ons. It may be necessary to reset AutoCAD to defaults afterwards.
  • Reinstall the software (see Recommended uninstall and reinstall procedures for AutoCAD). The installation may be damaged and AutoCAD needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled.
  • Install the latest available updates for AutoCAD (see Install Updates, Add-ons, and Enhancements).

AutoCAD

Solution:

User settings in AutoCAD for Windows are stored in two folders and a registry path (in AutoCAD for Mac, see the link referenced below). After installing AutoCAD and running the program once to make sure it works and has gone through its secondary installer process, follow the steps below to copy over the settings to another account or computer:
  1. Exit AutoCAD.
  2. Make a copy of the following two folders in a location accessible by all user accounts:

    For Windows Vista, 7, 8, and 10:

    C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\AutoCAD 20xx
    C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Autodesk\AutoCAD 20xx

    For Windows XP:

    C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Autodesk\AutoCAD 20xx
    C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\AutoCAD 20xx

    Note: These paths contain hidden folders (see How to turn on hidden files and folders on Windows).

  3. Export a copy of the AutoCAD registry key:

    1. Press WINDOWS-R on the keyboard to bring up the Run window, enter REGEDIT and click OK.

    2. Find the following registry key:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\AutoCAD\Rxx.x\ACAD-xxxx:40x

      This path is unique for each version of AutoCAD. To see which 'ACAD-xxxx' refers to, select it and then look at the keys on the right side of the Registry Editor. One of the keys will show the install path to the AutoCAD it applies to. The '40x' number signifies the language version of AutoCAD.

    3. Right-click the 'ACAD-xxxx:40x' folder and choose Export.

    4. Enter a file name of your choice, choose a location to save the file, and then click Save.

    5. Close the Registry Editor.

  4. Log in to the destination user account.

  5. Copy over the two folders to their respective locations.

  6. Double-click the .reg file to apply it to the registry. The .reg file can be deleted after use.

Additionally, some support files can be copied directly into the Support folder paths. Following is a generic list. Each product and version may have slightly different paths and additional custom paths may also be used. Refer to the file paths in Options > Files for the version in question.

How to do Page Setup in a Layout in AutoCAD

You can adjust the appearance and many behavior preferences for the application.

The most common settings are found in the following locations:

  • Options dialog box. Changes the settings that control color themes, background colors, crosshairs, grips, default file paths, tooltip display, command line fonts, and the behaviors of many application elements (OPTIONS).
  • Customize User Interface Editor. Controls the tools and command elements on ribbons, toolbars, and menus (CUI).
  • UCS Icon dialog box. Controls the appearance of the UCS icon in model space and paper space (UCSICON).
  • Clean screen. Toggles the display of the menu bar, status bar, ribbon, and the Command window when you want to expand the size of the drawing area (Ctrl + 0).
  • View transition settings. Controls whether view transitions are smooth or instantaneous when you pan, zoom, or change from one view to another (VTOPTIONS).
  • Workspaces. Specifies a named user interface environment that contains only the tools that you want displayed (WORKSPACE).

AutoCAD Tutorial 05: Best Settings in AutoCAD

As a beginner AutoCAD Drafter, you will need to know how to use these to start properly working with AutoCAD.

There are few important settings that are turned off by default, you need to be aware of them, and turn them ON to take on AutoCAD to its full abilities.

Here, we are working on the 2015 version of AutoCAD. The 2020 version is not that different from the one we used in this tutorial.

Important AutoCAD settings to turn ON

Dynamic Input

We have seen here how to disable and enable Dynamic input. You need to be able to have it displayed in your Status bar because you will need to turn it ON and OFF quite frequently.

Object Snap (OSNAP)

OSNAP is a tool that ensures precision while drawing. You use this to help you snap points on existing objects.

There are the options that are important to us right now are: Midpoint, Quadrant, and Tangent. You need to activate them on the list. (Right-click on the OSNAP icon to have the list displayed like on the image above)

Midpoint will help you achieve figures similar to the following.

To draw the segment BA, we needed to know exactly where the middle of DE was. when Midpoint is activated, we just have to hover the cursor close to the center of the segment DE after activating the LINE command for AutoCAD to help us snap the start-point at the center of DE.

Quadrant

Quadrant will be essential while working on the following example. You need to be able to hook A, B, C and D on the right points.

Tangent will be useful if you have the following to draw.

Grid

Just for the sake of knowing, Grid displays a series of graph paper style lines that can serve as a distance of reference.

Unit

You should know that at the beginning of every project, you need to set the unit in which you will be drawing. To access it, simply

  1. Type UNITS
  2. Hit ENTER

You can use the LENGTH section to set the format for units of measure. For example, if you choose Engineering and Architectural formats, AutoCAD will assume that each unit represents one inch.

You can as well set the Angle format.

The insertion scale helps control the unit of measurement for blocks that are inserted into your drawing. It is recommended to select Unitless to be able to insert blocks without scaling them to match the specified units.
