8. Rusty Nib Inkers For Procreate

Rusty Nib Inkers for Procreate

Who isn’t feeling a little distressed these days?

When we talk about ink, distressed ink has a higher viscosity and is pigment-based.

This leads to a more transparent tone, which is precisely what you get with this add-on for Procreate!

Intended to blend the inking tactics of old with a modern workstation, this set features 112 inking brushes with a wide range of edge detailing, textures and strokes.

While Rusty Nib may make for a mediocre adult film alias, this add-on for Procreate is anything but average!

Each brush was built from high definition scans of real inking work and tirelessly converted into digital form by the creator in order to give you the most authentic inking experience you could ask for.

Included in this package is a series of free updates, so you can be sure that this package will continue to be improved and refined!

My favorite is the Sumi-e brushes that come with this set, which favor bold strokes and thick accent lines.

When it comes to inking, this package gives you a wide variety of nibs, pens, brushes, ink washes, and watercolor tools to give expression to your next piece.

The ink wash effects have to be my favorite from this group, giving subtle tones and nuance that allows your work to the fine-tuned definition.

9.Sargent’s Oils – Procreate Brushes

Sargent's Oils – Procreate Brushes

Download Now!

This tool kit is based on the work of John Singer Sargent and the methods he used to create his masterworks.

These handcrafted brushes allow you to make vibrant oil paintings using high-resolution scans of real oil brush strokes.

But painstakingly digitized and turned into an easy to use (and much less messy) oil brush kit for Procreate.

I would use these with the Canvas kit mentioned earlier in this list.

However, the creator of this pack also includes a seamless canvas texture to create your own oil work in a matter of minutes.

Oil paintings are amazingly timeless for a reason: the elegant strokes and vibrant colors.

John Singer Sargent is a prime example of how to express artistic intent with oil-based paints.

Lady Agnew, a very famous piece by Sargent, is nothing short of a masterful representation of how the rich textures of oil can create.

Now, these tools are available to you through this fascinating add-on.

Featuring 14 brushes featuring dry, wet, glaze, and the canvas texture, this set is a fantastic example of what we can achieve using creativity and technology.

This add-on is so popular among oil enthusiasts that updates were demanded.

So updated brushes keep on coming, and new tweaks and changes continue to improve this set.

With an eye for consistency, the creator emphasized the same canvas texture similar to what Sargent used in his works, so be prepared to paint like a master with this package.

Anyone interested in oil-based art should investigate this pack immediately and get started on their next creative adventure.

Pros & Benefits:

  • Fantastic oil colors
  • Less messy than non-digital oil paint
  • 14 Brushes with a large variety of textures

There’s nothing more satisfying than creating a cartoon to express your thoughts.

A quick quote and a quirky thought can go a long way.

Having the ability to animate these ideas quickly is essential to making that all-important first draft.

If you like to animate and make short comics, this add-on is a significant first step to emote along the lines of your character.

A fast face matched with a line of dialogue is a fantastic way to get the impression you want for your reader.

I love these easy sketch tools as first drafts for comics or character models.

Having the ability to construct an expression that allows you to visualize your writing coming from an outside emotional character is a big creative step.

This can help you add life and realism to both your writing and drawing.

Once you tweak these preset models or even create variations of these models on your own, you can fine-tune your comic presentation to make it represent what you feel.

These faces are also great for quick and easy greeting cards and poster advertisements.

Introduction: Using Paper Texture Brushes in Procreate

In this tutorial I'm going to show you how to use Paper Texture brushes in Procreate to get a variety of effects. I'll be showing you how to use a texture brush to create a variety of paper finishes across your entire canvas, and also how you can use the brushes to apply texture in specific areas of your canvas.

Procreate is a drawing app for the iPad. It's best used with an Apple Pencil, but you can also draw with your fingertips. An Apple Pencil will be a bit less frustrating, and will allow you to draw with greater precision.

In this tutorial, I'll be using a set of paper texture brushes that I made. If you like them, they're available for sale on my website, but you can also follow this tutorial if you've bought texture brushes elsewhere or made your own.

Supplies

iPad suitable for running the Procreate app

Apple Pencil

Procreate app

Procreate paper texture brushes made with repeating patterns

Step 1: Installing New Brushes in Procreate

Procreate comes with a large selection of brushes already installed, and it's very easy to install third party brushes you've bought elsewhere online.

Simply download the brushes to your iPad, unzip the file if it's compressed, then tap on the brush file. Your brushes will automatically open and install in the Procreate app.

You then be able to see your paper texture brushes in the "Brush" menu.

Step 2: Creating a Natural Look Paper Background

You can add a paper texture to your Procreate project before or after creating your drawing. In this example, I've already made my drawing and will be applying the paper texture layer to it.

To create a natural looking paper background, tap the "Layers" menu and hit the "+" button to create a new layer. If it's not already there, drag this layer to the top, above all other layers.

Tap on the "N" to open up the layer setting menu. "N" stands for "normal", and is the default blending mode for your layer. Scroll through the list of blend modes and select "multiply". With this setting, any white areas on the layer remain transparent, and any darker areas multiply with the colours below and become darker, giving the appearance of tone and shade.

Open up the "Colour" menu and pick a colour for your paper. For natural looking papers, I recommend a light fawn shade, but experiment to see what works for you.

When you're ready, colour across your canvas with your Apple Pencil. My paper texture brushes are very large, making it nice and quick to fill the whole canvas, but you can adjust the size and opacity of the brush as you please.

Step 3: Examples of Different Paper Textures Applied to a Canvas

Paper textures vary wildly depending on the kind of paper you choose. In traditional art, the paper texture impacts how you make your art, but in digital art, you can use any kind of paper texture to adjust the look of your drawing.

Scroll through the images in this step to see how different paper textures applied using the settings in the previous step can add to an image.

Step 4: Using Paper Textures Designed for Darker Colours

Several of the paper textures in my pack are designed to be used with darker colours.

Contrary to using textures meant for lighter coloured papers, you may find it best to use these papers on the bottom layer of your project.

After dragging my paper layer underneath my image, I added a new layer just above it that gave my dove a white base to help the transparent colours in my image stand out from the dark background.

Step 5: Using Paper Textures in Selected Areas of Your Image

To apply a paper texture to only one area of your image, you can use a Clipping Mask layer.

Create a new layer above the one that you want to apply the paper texture to, then click on the layer again and new menu will expand out beside it. Choose "Clipping Mask" from this menu. This option creates a mask on any areas of the layer it's applied to, and your paper texture will only stick to those areas where you've drawn something.

Using this option you can layer up textures over a shape to make some really interesting, fun and creative effects.

That's it! Go make some art!

Procreate Tutorial - Drawing with Texture in Procreate

Drawing in Procreate has become one of my favorite ways to create artwork. In this Procreate tutorial, I'll share my top tip for making your illustrations pop - adding texture! Using texture brushes is a great way to add dimension and a professional look to your artwork.

And the best part? It's a really simple technique! In this Procreate tutorial, I'll show you my two favorite ways to add texture to your illustrations.

Here’s an example of a simple illustration in Procreate with and without texture. This simple Procreate technique will be a total game-changer for your artwork!

1 - Before and After.png

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • The Procreate iPad App (you can download it here)

  • An iPad to draw on (I use this iPad)

  • An Apple Pencil (I use this one. If you don’t have an Apple Pencil, you can use your finger, but I recommend an Apple Pencil for more control while drawing.)

  1. Texture Brushes in Procreate (Procreate has some great texture brushes built into the app, but if you want to explore some more texture options I love the free brushes from True Grit Texture Supply. You can get them here.)

What You’ll Learn:

  • How to add texture using a Clipping Mask in Procreate

  • How to add texture using the Alpha Lock setting in Procreate

More of a visual learner? I teach these texture techniques in all of my Procreate Skillshare classes. Here are three of my most popular Procreate classes that you can check out if you want to dive deep into textures and drawing in Procreate.

Graphics-Skillshare-For-Beginners-square.jpg

If you don’t already have a Skillshare membership, you can sign up for a free trial and watch all of my classes for free!

Ready to level up your illustrations with texture? Let's dive in! ✍️

Start by creating a new layer on top of the layer that you want to add texture to.

Next, click the thumbnail of your new layer and select Clipping Mask from the menu that pops up.

2 - Clipping Mask Gif.gif

You can confirm that the Clipping Mask is on because you’ll see a little arrow to the left of the layer pointing down.

3 - Clipping Mask Confirm.png

The Clipping Mask will contain whatever you draw on your Texture layer to the shapes on the layer beneath it. So in this example, everything that we draw on the texture layer will be contained in the brown house illustration. Here’s an example of how the clipping mask works. You’ll see that I’m drawing a yellow line all over the canvas, but it only appears on the house illustration.

Blog Gifs Cat (2).gif

Now it’s time to actually add the texture! Procreate has a lot of built-in textures in the brush library that you can choose from. If you want to check out some other free texture brushes, I love these from True Grit Texture Supply.

Once you’ve got your texture brush selected, you can start painting it on your texture layer! Here’s how I started laying down the texture in this example. I put some darker texture on the tops of each part of the illustration to give it some depth. It’s subtle but has a big impact.

Blog Gifs Cat (4).gif

If you’re using a reference photo, you can take a peek at it to decide where to place your dark textures and highlights based on the darker and lighter areas in the photo. To change the color of your texture brush, click the colored circle on the top right, select Classic at the bottom of the Colors Menu, and from there you’ll be able to choose lighter and darker colors for your texture.

5 - Color.png

Once you’ve added in your texture, it should look a little something like this! Pretty simple, right? The next technique is just as simple as this one! Read on if you want to learn how to use Alpha Lock to achieve the same textured result.

6- Before and after.gif

You may be wondering what the difference is between Alpha Lock and a Clipping Mask. Alpha Lock functions similarly to a Clipping Mask, but instead of using two layers, it just works with one. You’ll enable it on the layer that you are adding texture to, and like a Clipping Mask, the texture will be contained on just the elements of that layer.

The biggest difference between the two is that a Clipping Mask allows for non-destructive editing. For example, if you use a Clipping Mask to add texture, you can always edit the texture in the future since it’s on its own layer. With Alpha Lock, the texture that you’re adding is more permanent. It’s part of the layer that you’re working on which makes it harder to undo if you want to make changes.

Both techniques are great! Just choose which one works for you based on the piece you’re creating.

To turn on Alpha Lock, simply click the Layer thumbnail of the Layer you want to add texture to and select Alpha Lock from the menu. You’ll be able to tell that Alpha Lock is on because your layer thumbnail will have a checkered background behind the illustration.

7 - Turn on Alpha Lock.gif

Now you’re free to start adding texture! In this example I added a splatter texture to these flowers like this:

Blog Gifs Cat (5).gif

Because I had Alpha Lock on, the splatter stayed contained within the flower Illustration and didn’t show up on the white background.

And there you have it! Now you can use either Alpha Lock or a Clipping Mask to start adding texture to your drawings in Procreate.

I hope this Procreate tutorial has been helpful. As you can see, it’s a simple process that has a big impact on your artwork! If you have any questions about Procreate or adding texture to your artwork, drop them in the comments!

When you create your textured artwork I’d love for you to share it on Instagram and tag [email protected] so I can see what you make!

PROCREATE TIPS - How to make your own paper canvas in Procreate

Am I a fool, or what, to write first. The young waiter, who served Oksana Ivanovna a cup of coffee, looked at her. Completely unceremoniously, grinned and perhaps did not wink. Oksana Ivanovna involuntarily blushed, although it would be time for her to get used to this, since now her entire wardrobe literally provoked men.

To a cheeky attitude towards its owner.
