Minecraft Java Edition will soon require players to login with their Microsoft accounts

Minecraft will now soon be requiring Microsoft accounts to be able to log into any versions of Minecraft, including the Java Edition. According to a report in Slash Gear, Microsoft is assuring Minecraft Java players that nothing will change in the game apart from the way players log into the game's servers. As per the report, this is important since unlike Bedrock Editions, only the Java Edition has the ability to modify the game, which in turn, has made Minecraft so players.

What Minecraft is doing, instead, is to provide players with a more secure way of logging in thanks to Microsoft account's two-factor authentication.

According to a statement issued by Minecraft, they have said that all their games will require a Microsoft account to play – including Minecraft Java Edition.

Players having the same account to access any and all Minecraft games is a possibility. The benefits will also include improved parental controls to help youngsters safe when playing online and chat and invitation blocking.

As per Minecraft, the transition will be done in batches as the game reaches out to Java edition players in phases. Players will get an email that will include instructions on how to move their accounts. One they have completed the steps sent by Minecraft, they will use their Microsoft account to log in to the game going forward. Players will no longer be able to use their Mojang account.

However, if gamers miss the deadline, players will be unable to log into the game or play it anymore. In such cases, Minecraft players will have to go through an account recovery process.

So I’ve had Minecraft Java edition for a long time now and I’m having a problem with logging in. Everytime I try to login in the launcher, I put in my information and all but all it’s saying is that it cannot connect to server.

What can I do if the Minecraft login is not working?

1. Check for server issues

  2. Before proceeding with any other steps, check if the Minecraft server are down.
  3. Check Reddit and Minecraft.net forum and see if other users are reporting similar issues.
  4. In the case of server issues, you can do nothing but wait for the developer to fix the issue.

According to the Minecraft’s official page, errors like Login failed, invalid username and password can be a temporary issue and will automatically resolve after an hour or so.

Additionally, if you got the account username and password from a third-party, check for the validity of the user credentials for the Minecraft account. Do not try to log in repeatedly as it can get your account locked for 24 hours.


2. Reset Minecraft account password

  2. Log in with your email address and click on the Forgot password option.
  3. Minecraft will send a link to reset your password to your email address.
  4. Open the email and click on the link.
  5. Reset the password.
  6. Launch Minecraft and try to login again and check for any improvements.

3. Try a different browser

  1. If you are trying to login to Minecraft.net and experiencing the login not working issue, try using a different browser.
  2. Launch a different browser than your primary web browser.
  3. Open Minecraft.net and enter your login credentials.
  4. Check if you can log in to your account successfully.

4. Flush DNS configuration

  2. Type cmd and click OK to open Command Prompt.
  3. In Command Prompt, enter the following command and hit enter:
    Ipconfig /flushdns 
  4. Wait for the success message and close the Command Prompt.
  5. Launch Minecraft and try to log in.

Flushing the DNS  removes all the network information stored in the cache and forces the computer to find new DNS information.

The Minecraft login not working issue can occur if the Minecraft servers are facing technical issues. Most of the time, waiting for a couple of hours or even a day can automatically fix the issue.

Minecraft Java Now Requires A Microsoft Login

Mojang is making Microsoft accounts mandatory for players of Minecraft Java Edition. Players who don't make the switch won't be able to play.

Moving forward, players will need a Microsoft login to play Minecraft Java Edition. It has been about six years since the legendary sandbox game and its developer Mojang were purchased by Microsoft. Microsoft's been doing some remarkable things with the IP since the sale; most recently, it added the game's protagonist Steve to Nintendo's game-blending fighter Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Steve's cameo isn't the only exciting development for Minecraft fans. Earlier this month, Mojang announced the next big expansion to the game in the form of the Caves & Cliffs Update. The update will improve cave generation, introduce new cave biomes and mods, and add adorable axolotls to be encountered in the game's various waterways. The update will also add the long-awaited goats, which were chosen by the community some time ago for inclusion in the game. Players will have to wait a while for this major update to hit the game, but it's definitely something to look forward to.

In the meantime, Minecraft players should expect a bit of bookkeeping in the near future. Java Edition will soon require players to sign in using a Microsoft account, as revealed by an official blog post from Mojang (via VG247). This change is quite a shock for Java players, as that version of the game has always been kept fairly distinct from Microsoft's broader gaming ecosystem. But starting this fall, all new Java players will need to sign up for Minecraft using a Microsoft account instead of a Mojang one, and in early 2021, pre-existing players must swap out their accounts as well or be unable to play Minecraft at all. Mojang swears that the gameplay experience will remain unchanged, and that this move is mostly just to make bookkeeping easier. It will also improve security by offering players two-factor authentication, and make it easier for parents to use the game's new social interactions screen to block abusive and hateful chat being directed at their children.

Fans are sure to be wary of this announcement, and with good reason. In the past, big parent companies forcing gamers to integrate into their systems hasn't gone well. For instance, Oculus announced recently that all users of its VR systems would need to sign in through Facebook, a development that sparked widespread rage throughout the gaming community. Following the launch of its Quest 2 headset, numerous fans had their accounts shut down permanently, preventing them from playing VR at all. When it comes to the Minecraft move, many are worried that this is the start of a slippery slope, and that before too long Mojang will phase out Java permanently.

Minecraft remains the single best-selling video game of all time, and its fan base remains immense. If Mojang screws up this new development, it will have a lot to answer for. Better account security is certainly a positive, but it remains to be seen if two-factor authentication is worth the trouble of migrating everyone's Minecraft experience to Microsoft.

How can I stop Minecraft Launcher from requiring Microsoft sign-in every launch?

My son plays Minecraft Java Edition on Kubuntu 20.04. Up until recently (a couple weeks ago), it would always log him in automatically. Then, it stopped doing this, and prompted him to choose "Microsoft account" or "Mojang account."

Also, in the course of trying to sign in with the Microsoft account, "X" would pop up a zillion messages saying "the password you use to log into your computer no longer matches that of your login keyring." (No, the unix login password was never changed.) I got rid of those messages by deleting (actually moving aside) the file ; the next time we logged him into the Minecraft launcher with the Microsoft account there was a system prompt to enter a password with which to create a new default keyring, so we put in his unix login password for that on the basis of the earlier error message. (The new keyring had "Default" in the name; it wasn't called "login.keyring" anymore but I don't think that's important.)

This seemed to work fine, the launcher showed his Minecraft name in the list and after clicking it, he got the normal launcher screen with a big "play" button.

However, I wanted to test further so I logged out of his Linux account and logged in again. After that, starting the Minecraft launcher newly again showed the "Mojang account" or "Microsoft account" choice, i.e. he wasn't kept logged in. Maybe the keyring wasn't unlocked?

Does anyone know how to permanently resolve this? So far as I can tell nothing was changed locally between the time when it was auto-logging him in and the time when it started prompting for Microsoft sign-in every launch.

(Although, one thing that occurs to me is that it's very rare for him to log out of the Linux account rather than just lock it and put the computer to sleep, so maybe there's some step that needs to happen to unlock the keyring after he logs in? But I don't recall ever doing that before, and he's played for months; I don't think two weeks ago was the first time he's signed out the Linux account since starting Minecraft for the first time.)

also check if you are on the beta launcher. you can make a mojang account at mojang account and log in with that to check

Forgot to mention in my initial post, but you cannot make a Mojang account anymore. It'll just take you to another page to login with or create a Microsoft account, so legitimately using a 3rd party launcher is out of the question.

yeah this is stupid im not redownloading the launcher, i dont wanna lose all my recourse packs, i can get them again but its too much effort

Wish I'd known this was an issue before I picked up the game so recently. No Mojang account means no signing in for me. What a fun game they've made.

All I get when I try is "The account you're attempting to sign in with isn't provisioned for this environment. Your application may not be configured correctly." Is that consistent with everyone here, or do I have a fun new problem to contend with?

yea same prob but instead of that it shows me this "Something went wrong in the login process. If the problem persists, check your internet connection."even my ineternet is 50 mbps this game is rigged

Authentication

Minecraft 1.6 introduced a new authentication scheme called Yggdrasil which completely replaces the previous authentication system. Mojang's other game, Scrolls, uses this method of authentication as well. Mojang has said that this authentication system should be used by everyone for custom logins, but credentials should never be collected from users. For newer Microsoft accounts, see Microsoft Authentication Scheme.

Request format

All requests to Yggdrasil are made to the following server:

Further, they are expected to fulfill the following rules:

The should be a randomly generated identifier and must be identical for each request. The vanilla launcher generates a random (version 4) UUID on first run and saves it, reusing it for every subsequent request. In case it is omitted the server will generate a random token based on Java's which should then be stored by the client. This will however also invalidate all previously acquired s for this user across all clients.

Note: If a user wishes to stay logged in on their computer you are strongly advised to store the received instead of the password itself.

Currently each account will only have one single profile, multiple profiles per account are however planned in the future. If a user attempts to log into a valid Mojang account with no attached Minecraft license, the authentication will be successful, but the response will not contain a field, and the array will be empty.

Some instances in the wild have been observed of Mojang returning a flat for failed refresh attempts against legacy accounts. It's not clear what the actual error tied to the null response is and it is extremely rare, but implementations should be wary of null output from the response.

This endpoint is severely rate-limited: multiple requests for the same account in a short amount of time (think 3 requests in a few seconds), even with the correct password, will eventually lead to an response. This error clears up a few seconds later.

Refresh

Refreshes a valid . It can be used to keep a user logged in between gaming sessions and is preferred over storing the user's password in a file (see lastlogin).

Validate

Checks if an is usable for authentication with a Minecraft server. The Minecraft Launcher (as of version 1.6.13) calls this endpoint on startup to verify that its saved token is still usable, and calls if this returns an error.

Note that an may be unusable for authentication with a Minecraft server, but still be good enough for . This mainly happens when one has used another client (e.g. played Minecraft on another PC with the same account). It seems only the most recently obtained for a given account can reliably be used for authentication (the next-to-last token also seems to remain valid, but don't rely on it).
