Tractor Split - Splitting Stands

nyone said:

Was your diff lock engauging then disengaging while the pedal was pressed?

No, it just stopped engaging at all. When I got into it I found that they use a 2 pronged "clutch" assy that slides on the axle when you press on the foot pedal. This engages with the cage portion of the diff. and is harder than the diff cage so it wore the edges of the diff cage ears to where it wouldn't engage.I replaced all the parts needed and thought it was operator error. In a while it started acting up again and I finally woke up and realized that it was not fully dis-engaging when I took my foot off the pedal. I replaced the whole thing again and looked the linkage system over real close and found that there were some spots that needed to be lubricated that were not mentioned in the W.S.M. or owners manual. I now give them a good shot of Fluid Film every time I service the tractor and some times in between if I think of it. I'm also careful to be sure the pedal comes all the way up every time I use it. Our property is on the side of a hill and I have to use the dif. lock more than most people so learned the hard way.

One thing I forgot to mention is that I had a B7510 gear tractor and the axle lock pedal was on the right hand side of the tractor so the linkage went straight back to the dif.housing. This eliminates at least 2 joints and a lot of length in the linkage.

In my opinion it is a very poor design and the need to lube the linkage should be mentioned in one of the manuals. I think that most owners don't use it enough for it to be a problem but for people, like me, with steep terrain and loose soil it is a big problem.

SW MNI would want heavier one's than posted above for anything over 1000 lbs.

Give Kenny Peters a call at K&S steel products. Hes in indiana. Has a very nice splitting stand at a reasonable price. Also has really nice rotating engine stands.

Lawton, MIBest pic I have of mine right now. Normally have jacks with wheels

Southern MinnesotaI made mine using two 5000lb jacks and square tubing with adjustable uprights for different frame widths. Also removable straight casters so it does not move when I use it to support the front when rolling the rear out for trans repairs. I currently have it under a JD 4440, I will upload you some pictures of it tomorrow.

Redickville, OntMy neighbour made his out of trans mission jack. He took casters off and had some made like train wheels. Then he made a track that it sat on so you could roll one half tractor out of the way and when it was fixed roll it back together. I don’t have any pictures but work good. We just used heavy duty jack stand to hold up rear half.

thumb of miI put this together. We also have a 2 wheeled one that bolts to the frame. I don’t have any pictures on this iPad tho

southwest MissouriBowsley475. How do I get in contact w you?
Where you located?
I’ve built a cpl for myself. Do you have email or Text/photo cell phone?

KY

People can say what they want, and if you are splitting articulated machines you want something stronger, but for a straight frame tractor, you can build awesome stands quickly and inexpensively with heavy duty drop leg jacks.  I built a set last week, took about an hour.  I used two 5,000lb drop leg weld on jacks, welded a 1/2" plate to each after marking and cutting the holes from the frame bolts, and then welded fixed heavy duty casters to the foot.  Thor's look like swivel casters to me, but I used fixed ones so they didn't rotate and mess up my alignment.  I dropped the leg down one notch to where there was a hole exposed,. and then bolted a piece of angle at the base of each jack to keep them from even attempting  to spread apart/pull together when the weight was on them.  I sat a 1066 IH on them for over a week with no noticable strain.  I used a 6 ton jack stand under the rear with a 20 ton air/hydraulic bottle just snugged up against the underside of the tractor.  I probably wouldn't go much heavier than that without a stouter stand, but I would do that one and any smaller anytime with those.  I like the dual jacks, if anything shifts at all, you can use them independently to re-align when going back together.

Sounds great thanks!

Lincoln, North Dakota1000 lbs?
Those jacks are 5000 lb jacks

I've split 37 tractors with those since I've built them 4 years ago.
Only thing I've done to them since was built my own straight castor wheels.

Edited by thorfarms 3/28/2018 21:40

Lincoln, North DakotaThat's the only thing I've changed to them since I built them 4 years ago was changed the castors to non swivel. And I'll admit I should have done that from the start. On heavier tractors I add a stabilizer between the 2 jacks.
I did build a set of rear stands also

Made a set just like the trailor jacks . Would fit anything . Split a 1000 tractors . U could have them 4 a pattern but someone “borrowed “ them . Been gone for years . Im shur theyl return em ?? I find it easier 2 use a floor jack on the back and an a frame with a hoist on both sides of the front .

SW MNIt's not the jacks, its the leverage, of both the large caster wheels that also have the built in angle to start with And the distance from the mounting point to the bottom of the wheels. At the very least I would add adjustable square tubing to go between the 2 when attached to the tractor. and an angle up to the front of frame. But then I have no Idea how big of a tractor your splitting. Too Each his own.

NW WashingtonCheck the pictures on this web site of a splitting stand maker and do a little reverse engineering. Or buy some.
http://www.cofersales.com/Products/Stands/trac.htm

I've been looking at their products. Best ones I've seen yet. Wish I could see some of them in person.

NwiaNot sure how much rear end work your doing it what color tractor but I've got a factory ih rear end splitting stand I would sell located in northwest iowa. Email is good.

wciayears ago many many our dealer made the stands and one in particular was one for the rear end of a red tractor. he made it like a wagon hoist and used the hydralics on the tractor to pick it up. worked slick I havent seen one for years.

Central ksI built a set just like this and really like having the swivel casters so you can move to the side if needed.

NC IndianaIf your just splitting them, then one like ours works nice . It’s several s cations of track with a 4 wheel cart that sets on the rails. The local shop that was he MM dealer back 8n the day has 3 wheel triangle shaped carts that attach to the front 1/2 and uses blocks and a jack on the rear. We’ve use 2 wheels that bolt to the frame rails and chained to the front axles before. That would be my last choice as we fought it a lot to realign the halves and I always felt I was going to wear the engine.

Southern MinnesotaI got some pictures of mine in action this morning. Very similar to what IHManky described I believe. Bottle Jack is under the center for extra support as the 4440 rear end is rolled out and in pieces for a bad B range. I do also have removable straight casters that I bolt on for when splitting at clutch housing and rolling front end forward. Stand is 60" wide total, uprights are 2ft high. Jacks are 2 Bulldog 5000 Lb weld on jacks with 15"travel and drop legs.

Peoria,IL.My son made them using old NH3 applicator jacks and wheels. Very nice.

Do you have to wedge the front axle so the engine doesn't tip over or is the frame wide enough on the floor it will support it? Looks like a really nice setup.

okHave a set of nearly the exact stands work perfectly
